I love narrative nonfiction, and In the Heart of the Sea is the best of the genre that I‘ve read in a while. The story of the shipwreck and its survivors is riveting, and I also found myself very interested in the brief history of Nantucket. For a story from the early 1800s, it has a lot of relevant things to say about racism and classicism and family. Very highly recommended.

eeclayton I loved this too, fascinating read! 3y

Megabooks Interesting! So different from mine, except I thought The Trees was awesome, too. I think that‘s the only one we‘ve all agreed on. 3y
Ruthiella Nice! Your bottom three would match my bottom three! And l would also rank The Trees highest! 3y

At the eleventh hour, I am a #tob22 completist! I‘ve never read every one before; I generally have one book I dislike so much I bail. I hung in this year but I found that I was onto something with my decision not to finish this one during #camptob. For me it was a big mishmash of words and thoughts that didn‘t add up to anything much. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Still, so excited for tomorrow, woohoo! 🙂

Readerann Wow! Congrats on your completist status! 🎉 3y
Ruthiella Congratulations on completing all 18! 🥳 I hated this on too, though I enjoyed her memoir 3y

I know I‘m late to this party, but chiming in to say Project Hail Mary is SO good. I‘m reading my very last #tob22 book so picked whatever struck my fancy for my latest listen and this was it. Great pick by me. 😂 The narrator was excellent and the production did a really good job with the alien voice, very clever.

#captainkangaroo gets as much credit as anyone for my love of reading. I never missed his CBS morning show, which always included his reading aloud a picture book in its entirety. No moralizing or teaching before or after; the captain read engaging books and let them speak for themselves. 4 stars for Matrix. I very much liked Marie‘s story and her strength, and the writing was really beautiful. Visions and mysticism aren‘t my things at all; I think Marie had what she needed within herself. But since her visions are part of the meager historical record, I put up with them. 😂 #tob22 #historicalfiction

Yossarian I think I had my expectations set too high after Fates and Furies. Matrix was good, but I felt let down by it. 3y
Mindyrecycles @Yossarian My only prior experience with Groff was her short story collection, Florida. 3y
Yossarian Fates and Furies had an amazing “twist” halfway through that made me want to completely re-read it. It‘s like if M. Night Shamalayan directed The Godfather. It‘s a great movie, but you kept waiting for Marlon Brando to reveal he was an alien, or dead, or it was all a simulation— and it never happened. 3y

Wow, I literally suck. 😂 I read two whole books in August. (Read 10 in July!?!) At least they were both excellent. I did read the grownup version of Hidden Figures, I just liked the kiddie cover better. In my defense, I stepped in a hole some weeks ago and my injured foot has kept me from exercising which has limited my audiobook time. On a more positive note, I‘ll definitely finish Don Quixote in this month. 😬

I owe Hemingway an apology. I tried to read Old Man and the Sea 30 years ago and found it so dull I gave it up almost immediately. Ever since I‘ve thought of him as a crap writer but I gave this one another try and LOVED it. Such beautiful, spare sentences and such a powerful story about man‘s relationship with the rest of nature. I can‘t square Hemingway‘s respect for all life here with his love of bullfighting, though. 😡

SW-T Hmmm...I tried reading it a couple decades ago and hated it. Loved Hills Like White Elephants though. Perhaps I‘ll give this another try. Thanks for your post! 😊 5y
GingerAntics I didn‘t know he had a love for bullfighting. That‘s interesting. I had to read this book in 7th grade and couldn‘t stand it. The movie was only slightly less painful. I commend you for giving it another shot. 5y
Hamlet Try “A Clean Well-Lighted Place.” He‘s best as a short story writer, I think. His understanding and feelings about bullfighting come out in The Sun Also Rises. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Mindyrecycles @SW-T @Hamlet Thanks! I‘ve stacked both of those. @GingerAntics OMG 7th grade!? That is just cruel. Giving books one more chance is a thing I do occasionally, especially since I found Code Name Verity a bewildering chore and put it down only to have it chosen for my book club. For some reason I loved it to death on my second try. 5y
Mindyrecycles Hemingway‘s NF book about bullfighting: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_in_the_Afternoon (edited) 5y
GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 that would probably be a good way to describe my 7th grade ELA teacher. She was so mad that all we thought of the book was that it was boring. She kept telling us we were throwing away an educational opportunity. 🙄 Because that‘s what most 7th graders think about. 🤣😂🤣 5y
