This book transported me into the minds of all the people who existed during all the times before me. It truly felt sensory, the way the author writes, so amazing😍😍😍😍

Interesting, well-researched read. In the beginning i kept having to go back to check where id read that name before, but i was sucked in before long. It quite inspired me!
This book was almost more of a interconnected community of short stories than a novel, which took some getting used to but became the thing I loved most about it. Really beautifully written and conceived; shows so many layers of interconnectedness along racial, generational, and geographic lines. It wasn‘t a book to speed through but one to savor and I‘m sure it‘s one I‘ll come back to over the years.
Wanted to like this book but the countless characters made keeping up a problem. The story begins begins around 1948 and spans 60 years, chronicling the stories of 3 families- the White Camphor and Vincent families and the African American Johnson family. There is a lot of racial tension, family power dynamics, numerous histories, violence, and a lot of messiness. I liked the complexity but there were sadness and violence too. Thanks Netgalley.
Simultaneously concise and epic, Porter packs a punch with every character and plot line. Spanning seven decades, it explores the realities of living in the United States through a variety of lenses and eras as two families come together. Porter‘s real triumph is her resistance to explain. The stories are for the reader to consume as they are. This is good Literature with a capital L. It is one of the most affecting contemporary works of fiction.
Perfect way to start the week The Travelers getting raves all over. Thanks @Crownpublishing
