We don't have an indie bookseller, per de, so I'm posting about our local used book store. The selection is usually good, their prices are reasonable, and the trade in deals generally fair (not that I personally ever trade in books!). I do wish our area, with two B&Ns and a couple Books-a-Millions, had an independent book store. Alas.

RadicalReader @ImaginativeMom I love book sales and even better when you can pick books up for a bargain. If you like suspense books I highly recommend You and Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes and The Girl Before by JP Delaney 6y

Ugh. I couldn't do it. I tried so hard. It could be that I've spent this week fighting some sort of crud, but this book just stalled my reading life. I couldn't even get the excitement to pick up another one. Reading this felt like drudgery. Maybe it's that by the time I quit, nothing but tragedy had befallen the MC. I do hope you'll give it a try if you enjoy mysteries, alternating time lines, and a little bit of fantasy. It just wasn't for me.

This is my grandfather, about eight months ago. He was only 102 then. Today, he's 103. His life is full of books! He was a school teacher about eighty years ago and a principal, too. My grandmother was a librarian. He's a preacher, an author, he's built a school, and everywhere he's lived, including his current apartment, has been full of books. As long as he stays happy and healthy, I hope he celebrates more birthdays. 🎂 ❤️🎉

Still with a snarfy head, so continuing with the story of Ronin and Amery. This book reminded me some of Jodi Malpas' This Man series. These two are completely tied up in each other (there's a pun in there). In this one, an old ex surfaces making life hell and both families get involved. If you like things graphic, there's a lot here for you. The way I'm feeling, I skimmed quite a bit. Pick only as compared to other books in the genre.

I have a cold. I don't want to suffer or agonize or have to think my way through a book. So thank you, Ms James, for Bound. Shibari loving Sensei Ronin took one look at the new girl in the self defense class at his dojo and went all growly alpha. Amery found a lot to like in Ronin, but would friends, jobs, and secrets keep them apart? Good read in this genre with a fuzzy head.

I really enjoyed this novella length sequel to Master of Crows. We follow the mage Silhara and his former apprentice, now wife, Martise, as they battle more dark magic. This time, however, the enemy may not be what he seems. And what of Martise's Gift? It's playing a troubling game of hide and seek. Mute Gurn and mage finding hound Cael are both back and the ending leaves no doubt that we'll see more in this smart fantasy series.

Y'all. Y'ALL. This book wrecked me. This pretty cover hides a story of love and loss and desperation; of family, friendship, and betrayal. What do you do when the person you love most asks you to do the impossible? Can best friends, marriages find their way through tragedy? This novel has so many levels and is wonderfully written, but it wrung me out.

Karen3 Love her books but they all seem to do that to me. 8y

It's #recommendsday and I'm going with The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. This is a retelling of The Iliad with an unexpected love story that might make some readers uncomfortable, which hasn't stopped me from gifting this book over and over. If you know the story of the Trojan War, you'll be delighted in this artful retelling. If you don't, hold on for a dynamic and thrilling ride.

I often wonder how readers' experiences affect their relationships to novels. Were I not the mother of a son, man cub, would I have been so moved by this?

LauraBeth You probably would have been - when I read a passage like this I read it along two parallels - one as the actual passage and second with me trading in my own personal experiences to make it relevant. So I read this passage for what it was and then re-wrote it of sorts but with my daughter in mind. Does that make sense? I'm beginning to unravel why I'm not a particularly fast reader... 8y
ImaginativeMom @LauraBeth That *does* make sense. But what if we weren't parents? Would that make a difference? 8y
Cinfhen @ImaginativeMom @LauraBeth I absolutely believe who we are, where we come from, where we're going and where we are affect our reading. Books that I couldn't relate to in high school suddenly make sense now that I'm a "few" years passed high school 8y
See All 8 Comments
LauraBeth That's a good question @ImaginativeMom and I think @Cinfhen touches on it in that our experiences do shape how we perceive things so if you had read this before being a mom, then you would have read it differently (I'm guessing with not as much passion for this passage as now). I like to go back and re-read books I read in my 20s and 30s because it's like I'm reading an entirely different book. 8y
ImaginativeMom @LauraBeth @Cinfhen I think you're both right, of course. I think I've just been meditating on how being a parent influences my reading given the books I've read recently. Thanks for your only! 8y
gibblr I think it would absolutely influence your reading/interpretation of it, but I do not think it would necessarily move you any less. Does that make sense? 8y
ImaginativeMom @gibblr It does make sense, but that's what I'm wondering as I sob my way through this book. Are people who have not been parents as moved in books like this as people who have? I know, for instance, that while reading war fiction is powerful for me, it's much more powerful for my husband who is a veteran. This is a ridiculous discussion, of course. Our experience informs our reading. It's just this book. Wow. 8y
gibblr Of course. I'm a mom and I love all things Picoult, so I understand you with this book! 8y

After loving The Sugar Queen, I had great expectations for this novel. Unfortunately, they weren't met. I felt like Allen was trying to tell too many stories in one place; too many relationships to satisfactorily track in such a short novel. And the ending! In some ways tied up in a too convenient bow and in one very important way almost a cliffhanger for a non existent sequel. I'll read more of her work, though, as I do enjoy her writing.

As books on #innocence go, this heartbreaking novel about boys going to war, and what happens to the ones who survive, is stellar. The innocence of the boys sent, of the girls left behind, of the ones who watch their buddies die (at least the first time), the journalists thrown into the madness. O'Brien covers all the ground as one who lived it, documenting the innocence lost in the Vietnam War. #augustphotochallenge

So after driving y'all crazy with all the novella postings, it comes down to this: I clearly love this series. I read the Elemental World series first and while that wasn't a problem, I wish I had gone in order and read Elemental Mysteries first. I also wish I had ignored my distaste for novellas and read those as I went, instead of in one batch, as they added info it would have been nice to have. If you love fantasy, check this series out!

This is two Christmas novellas by two authors, Grace Draven and Elizabeth Hunter. My focus right now is on Hunter's story as I wrap up my Elemental project. Here, we return to Gio and B as they travel to Italy for Christmas. They're tracking a book, as they do, starting at their private library with the librarian/caretaker,Fina. Then to their friend Zeno at the Vatican library. Romance ensues, mysteries are solved, family and friends celebrated.

This is the second novella in, and prequel into, the Elemental Legacy series. While the first novella followed Ben and Tenzin on a crazy quest in China, this takes them into Italy. Ben may be human, but he is also famous in the vampire world. He has big decisions to make. Will he remain a part of the immortal world or leave it behind for something more... Human?

So the next novella in the Elemental World series that I want to add in here isn't in the database. It's called The Bronze Blade. It's awful and tragic in some ways, but may be my favorite. It's the back story on Tenzin, one of the oldest and certainly the most unique character in the series. I soaked up this novella, even though it was violent and broke my heart.

This is not the cheesy romance it seems! It's the fourth book in Elizabeth Hunter's Irin Chronicles. The men are scribes, keepers of history and fierce warriors, magic tattooed on their skin. The women, singers, executing their magic in voice. There are wicked angels, politics and intrigue, battle and mercy, love and loss. The first three books follow Malachi and Ava. This book is the six hundred year story of Damien and Sari. And it's wonderful.

This is book four and the last book in Hunter's Elemental Mysteries series. It's also my least favorite, for a couple reasons. I wasn't overly fond of the flashbacks and she kinda made this one a "new adult" book. I'm totally not opposed to that genre, but that's not what this series has been, so it threw me off. It's still a pick for me as it nicely ties off the ends of this series, while leaving room for the next. Um, #bookisholympics book 8!

Really, the only good thing about this book is the cover. Beautiful, right? That's what sucked me in. Silly girl. That old adage exists for a reason 'cause this book's terrible. At least the first 129 pages are. I very rarely bail on a book, but I just couldn't take another paragraph. I'll keep it on my shelf, though, 'cause it sure is pretty!!

acc5446 it really is pretty! 8y
BekahB Yikes! I bought this one for the cover too! Haven't read it yet. I had high hopes for a bloody war between fairies and gnomes. I'll probably eventually pick it up and see how far I can get into it. I have a pretty low threshold for nonsense before I quit a book though 😆 8y
ImaginativeMom @BekahB Oh no! Maybe you'll like it? Different strokes, yeah? I think lots of people got pulled in by this pretty cover and to be fair, @Merethebookgal said the last 20% or so of the book was better. I just couldn't take it. 🙄 8y

Wow. This is pretty bad. I didn't expect much from Harper Teen novel, but I think I expected more than this. We go from boy meets girl in a snooty boarding school to... Oh, wait, it's *that* kind of school in about one disappointing sentence. And then tragic boy/girl stories, fighting against what's expected of them by family tradition. Add a ton of nonsensical details and this is a pan. #bookisholympics book six

ImaginativeMom @GinaAnderson I had not heard of this Booker Prize winner until I saw it at this thrift store! Have you read it? 8y
GinaAnderson @ImaginativeMom Yes! It's been quite a while but I adored it. 8y

Thrift store haul! The most exciting moment? When my daughter discovered A Tree Grows In Brooklyn all by herself and asked for her own copy. It's the little moments, my friends.

You know the alpha male, Insta-love, HEA genre? Yeah, that's my guilty pleasure. When I want easy, mindless reading, I find a book boyfriend and lose myself in his trilogy. Sad to say, I couldn't get out of this world of alpha Drake and his minions fast enough. This book was terrible. Crappy dialogue, ridiculous plot devices, a female MC I wanted to put in therapy, and all the misogynistic tropes you could want. Just... No. 😖 #bookisholympics one

Hooked_on_books Ug! 😠 8y
LibrarianJen I'll probably skip this one then! Maya Banks is hit and miss with me anyways. 8y

Bookworm54 Have you tried anything by Nalini Singh? 8y
ImaginativeMom @LibrarianJen Me, too! @Bookworm54 I don't think so. Any recommended starting place? 8y
Bookworm54 I would probably start with the psy-changeling series, as it is the one most people tend to love. The first in the series is called slave to sensation. She also has the guild hunter series-first book Angel's blood, and the rock hard series. She writes some pretty awesome alpha males! 8y
BookishFeminist Ugh! Misogynistic tropes are the worst killjoy in a book. (Or any other type of demoralizing ___ism trope for that matter.) 😓😤 8y
LibrarianJen @ImaginativeMom @Bookworm54 I love the psy-changeling series! 8y
Bookworm54 @LibrarianJen exactly! Fits all the tropes described. Amazing author :) 8y
ImaginativeMom @Bookworm54 @LibrarianJen Thanks! I'll check those out! May be some good reads for #bookisholympics. 8y
ImaginativeMom @BookishFeminist One of the ones this book played hard to was the, "You're so much more beautiful and amazing because you don't know you are" crap. It seemed to be this woman's most redeeming quality. 8y

So I'm kind of hoping this isn't actually a #uniquefacts thing because then I can tell my daughter I'm not that weird, but I have a serious obsession with Sharpies. This is just a sampling of my current collection; the ones I've made available in the school supply (another obsession) corner of our keeping room. So maybe I have a few. What of it?? 😠😬😳

Melkyl That's funny! I also obsessively buy Sharpies. I have all colors and the different tips. My students love to use them because I have all the best colors 😊 8y
Gayan I love Sharpies! ❤️ 8y
ImaginativeMom @Melwilk Right?!? And the clickable highlighters! Seriously, how do you not buy those when they go on sale?? And the metallics! So many uses.... 👍🏼👊🏼👏🏼 8y

ImaginativeMom @Gayan Sharpies solidarity! 😎👍🏼👊🏼 8y
LauraBeth Wait - are we not supposed to be obsessed with sharpies? Because I've been eyeing the 80s glam pack... 8y
Chessa We also have a ton, all colors! 8y
ImaginativeMom @LauraBeth Rock on like Madonna, my friend! Everyone needs the Glam pack!! 😎🤘🏼💅🏼 8y
ImaginativeMom @Chessa With a mohawk and tattoos, I'm usually proud of individuality. Right now, I'm grooving on being part of the crowd! 😂😂😂 8y
PatriciaU Showing my ignorance here... What is a "keeping room?" I've seen it referenced here a couple of times. 8y
subwayreads I love them too! 8y
ImaginativeMom @PatriciaU It's a particularly Southern thing: a family room, basically, built off the kitchen. By tradition, it has a fireplace. It's a smaller space for the fam to hang out, entertain, keep kids close while cooking, etc. It's a versatile space that we use as a study space a library and occasionally for entertaining. 8y
ImaginativeMom @subwayreads Whoop!! 👍🏼👊🏼👏🏼 8y
ImaginativeMom @Skiles I get it. I do. But I'm pan-Sharpie lover. ❤️😂😂 8y
PatriciaU @ImaginativeMom Ah! Like a family room! I get it! I am always learning new things here! Thanks.... 8y
LibrarianJen I have sharpie envy! 8y
ImaginativeMom @PatriciaU Yes! Though traditionally just smaller. Normally, you wouldn't fit a full size couch in one, for instance. 😄 8y
Meg11726 I have a huge sharpie addiction.. In fact so bad my mom buys them for me for Christmas every year.. I have them everywhere in my house lol 8y
ImaginativeMom @Meg11726 New Sharpies on Christmas morning? What could be better? 😍 8y
BookishFeminist 😂😂 love your unabashed sharpie and office supply collecting. No shame! Sharpies rock. 🤘🏼 8y
ImaginativeMom @BookishFeminist If I showed you my pencil hoard you might be temporarily taken aback, but I swear it's necessary! My kids lose everything. (That's my story!!) 😂😂😂 8y

The highlight review on the back cover is from Stephanie Meyer of Twilight fame. If that doesn't give you pause, you'll like this book. It's squarely YA and a very quick read. It also seems to be ripe for a sequel. Featuring demons, bestie problems, angsty does-he-like-me issues, and one rockin' school play, it's a fun little read if you're mind needs a break.

BookishFeminist I would be in it just for that cover 👹 8y
ImaginativeMom @BookishFeminist Truly, that's the best part of the book. 😂😂 8y

For all the Litsy teachers. 😂

Melkyl So true. When I run into my students in public, they don't know how to act 😂 8y
BookishFeminist 😂😂 8y
ImaginativeMom @Melwilk My Mom was an elementary school teacher. When I was young and we ran into her students, I could see the thought in their heads: "Whoa! She keeps kids at home, too?!" 8y
Varshitha This is so true.. Even now when I run into my teachers after all the 'How are you?' and 'How are classes?' I would be thinking what to talk to them.. 8y
BookishMarginalia Yep, we exist beyond the classroom. (Barely 😜) 8y

After almost 20 hours on the court this week, including gold in doubles yesterday, this great tennis player and good man lost his match to Del Potro just now. I fervently hope he wins his bronze medal match. This book is a fascinating read for any tennis fan.

MrBook Niiiiiice. ....What's a keeping room? I want one. 8y
ImaginativeMom @MrBook I think they're particularly Southern. The concept is old, but has been revived. Basically it's a small version of a family room off the kitchen, with a fireplace. It's for entertaining, keeping kids close while you're cooking, hanging out with the fam in a smaller space, meant to be flexible. We use it as a homework space and library, mainly. 8y
TeR That's beautiful 8y
MrBook Wonderful! 😁👍🏻 When I win the lottery and build my and @BookBabe 's house, we'll have one or two of these rooms 😊. 8y
Laalaleighh @ImaginativeMom we had a keeping room growing up!! Gorgeousssss book arranging btw! 8y

Pickpick

First and without a doubt, impeccably written. The sentences are flawless; paragraphs beautifully constructed. And yet, too many POVs bothered me. The first hundredish pages had me wondering if the plot would ever come together. Once it did, though, I was delighted! Great twists and turns. One other small deduction for heavy use of foreshadowing. I certainly recommend this, especially if you like historical fiction. This guy's a master at it!

Every Day I Fight | Stuart Scott, Larry Platt
post image

For #readingisasport #funfridayphoto I have to go with this memoir, published posthumously, by the great Stuart Scott. This is both about sports, relating Scott's time as a mainstay at ESPN, but also about his fight with cancer. It's a gut wrenching, yet uplifting read. If you have a chance, check out his ESPY speech on YouTube, made not long before he died. It's powerful.

This is what happens when the BAM under $5 cart is just outside Papa Murphy's (take away pizza) and there's a buy 2, get 1 sale inside. (And hey! No judging the Maya Banks! 😂😇)

ImaginativeMom THANK YOU @LauraBeth! Yes! They weren't even $3. Really, I was rescuing them. I should be... Knighted or something. 🗡😆 8y
ImaginativeMom @LitHousewife I actually don't go to this one very often, even though it's the closest book store to my house, because it's postage stamp tiny. But there was no way to escape a visit last night! 8y
ImaginativeMom @gezemice I didn't even know he was so prolific until I saw the raves on here! I've only read Lamb, which I loved. Excited to read this. 8y
Hooked_on_books Frankly, I'm surprised you didn't grab more! 😬 8y
ImaginativeMom @Hooked__on__books As you might imagine, there's a lot of crap on the under $5 cart. 😂😂😂😂 And cookbooks, religious stuff, and a bunch I've already read. Those were all the things I told myself as I walked away! Lol 8y
Sfox414 A Dirty Job is so much fun!! I really like Christopher Moore's books set in San Francisco--if you like A Dirty Job, there's a sequel AND a whole other trilogy that's a big vampire love story but with a CM spin, so it's better than it sounds. 8y
MrsV Love Christopher Moore and Sherrlyn Kenyon 8y
MrsV Oh, and no shame here regarding Maya Banks. 8y
ImaginativeMom @Sfox414 Good to know! I love vamps and I love series. @MrsV Thanks for the support. 😂😂😂 8y

For my sporadic participation on #day11 of #augustphotochallenge #augustofpages my pick for #politicsandbooks is by a man I deeply respect and had the chance to spend some time with a few years ago, Dr. Cornel West. Not everything in this book is overtly political, but if you're interested in #socialjustice, #humanrights, or the basic roots of #BLM, this is an essential read.

GinaAnderson Lucky you. 8y
ImaginativeMom @GinaAnderson Don't I know it! I only had about twenty minutes with him, but I'll never forget it. We talked mainly about civil rights, but also joked about the heat in the south and he took genuine interest in me and my story. Later, I heard him speak on a couple panels. So, so lucky. 8y
Tammygrrrl I got to hear him speak at The Justice Conference in Chicago last year. Straight up prophetic. 8y
ImaginativeMom @Tammygrrrl Oh lucky you!! I bet that was terrific. 8y

Little Bee | Chris Cleave
post image

My #recommendsday pick is Little Bee by Chris Cleave. I read this book years ago and it broke me in all the best ways. I'm still haunted by it. When I remember this novel, I'm flooded with love and despair, with desperation and grief, and yet a small spark of hope. The tiny details are lost to me, but the power is still so vital that I hope you'll check it out if you haven't.

Melkyl This was a great book! I read it not knowing what to expect and thought it was powerful. 8y
Varshitha Definitely want to read this.. I don't know why but any title with bee in it gets my instant attention 😆 8y

So as I remember being the kid always picked last for dodge ball, I can't bring myself to pick just a few folks who I love on here. Instead, here are five things @Litsy has taught me, through some amazing people:

1. Y'all love some Harry Potter.
2. Libraries are still vibrant.
3. Book clubs aren't dead.
4. Literary peeps have some beautiful cats.
5. It's not just me!!

Thanks to everyone I've met for the lessons. 😄😻💖👊🏼

ImaginativeMom @Leelee08 You're so kind!! ❤️ @LitHousewife Ha! That makes me happy! 😃 @Ambrosnazzy And you just took me back to Pride and Prejudice. I love y'all!! @subwayreads Um, there have to be some, right? My kids would love a dog! But Mama would end up scooping poop and that's not on my dream list. Haha! 8y
ImaginativeMom @KarenUK @LauraBeth @CherylDeFranceschi Thanks for the love. 😍❤️😊 8y
Melkyl Great post - I agree! 8y
Hooked_on_books Good post! I was definitely having a "clearly not one of the in crowd" feeling yesterday, so I appreciate this. And @subwayreads check out my feed--I throw my dogs in there! 8y
subwayreads @Hooked_on_books eeee following now!! I love dogs. @ImaginativeMom I know what you mean, my dad was essentially a poop scooper for my childhood 🙈 8y
