A History of Glitter and Blood
A History of Glitter and Blood | Hannah Moskowitz

Sixteen-year-old Beckan and her friends are the only fairies brave enough to stay in Ferrum when war breaks out. Now there is tension between the immortal fairies, the subterranean gnomes, and the mysterious tightropers who arrived to liberate the fairies. But when Beckan's clan is forced to venture into the gnome underworld to survive, they find themselves tentatively forming unlikely friendships and making sacrifices they couldn't have imagined. As danger mounts, Beckan finds herself caught between her loyalty to her friends, her desire for peace, and a love she never expected. This stunning, lyrical fantasy is a powerful exploration of what makes a family, what justifies a war, and what it means to truly love.

This book and I had a complicated relationship. I originally started it and came very close to bailing...I was standing at my library's drop box ready to give up...and I just couldn't. So I started the book again, and I found that I actually enjoyed it. The writing style takes a little bit to get used to, and the world isn't explained as much as I would like, but I'm glad I didn't give up on it.

A story about fairies who live forever but get eaten on the regular by gnomes... Really violent and different than what I'm use too. It's got an unreliable narrator because it's a book being written in a book. Beckan is the girl who the book inside the book is being written about and I didn't know what had actually happened and what didn't. It was odd... Not really a super happy ending, kind of, I liked the fairy tale element I guess.

Bailedbailed

Really, the only good thing about this book is the cover. Beautiful, right? That's what sucked me in. Silly girl. That old adage exists for a reason 'cause this book's terrible. At least the first 129 pages are. I very rarely bail on a book, but I just couldn't take another paragraph. I'll keep it on my shelf, though, 'cause it sure is pretty!!

acc5446 it really is pretty! 8y
BekahB Yikes! I bought this one for the cover too! Haven't read it yet. I had high hopes for a bloody war between fairies and gnomes. I'll probably eventually pick it up and see how far I can get into it. I have a pretty low threshold for nonsense before I quit a book though 😆 8y
ImaginativeMom @BekahB Oh no! Maybe you'll like it? Different strokes, yeah? I think lots of people got pulled in by this pretty cover and to be fair, @Merethebookgal said the last 20% or so of the book was better. I just couldn't take it. 🙄 8y

I'm trying hard not to bail on this. Has anyone read it? I'm on page 129. Is it worth sticking it out? 🤔

Merethebookgal I didn't like it at all. The only reason I didn't bail right away was because it was for book club. The last...maybe 20% is a little better, but no one in my book club really liked it. I'd bail if you're not into it. 8y
ImaginativeMom @Merethebookgal Thanks! I hate to bail because I could finish and count it for #bookisholympics, but I'm not sure I could stand it. Maybe as a last resort. Appreciate the advice!!! 8y

I have a really hard time not finishing a book, but if this hadn't been my book club's pick, I wouldn't have finished it. It was really...weird. And not weird in a good way. Along with being weird it was pretty boring and hard to follow. The last 20% was better but didn't make up for it overall.

This book was dark and hard and cruel and beautiful, and it hurt my heart to read. I loved the crap out of it.

I picked this book up because of the @bookriot deals email. I have no clue what it's about. Let's do this.

Holy wow, this book: the layering of time, the interweaving of narrative, and over it all the brutality of war.

This book is weird and wonderful in all the right ways. It's dark and sort of horrible and so fucking good.
