The Pact
The Pact: A Love Story | Jodi Picoult
Until the phone calls came at three o'clock on a November morning, the Golds and their neighbors, the Hartes, had been inseparable. It was no surprise to anyone when their teenage children, Chris and Emily, began showing signs that their relationship was moving beyond that of lifelong friends. But now seventeen-year-old Emily is deadshot with a gun her beloved and devoted Chris pilfered from his father's cabinet as part of an apparent suicide pactleaving two devastated families stranded in the dark and dense predawn, desperate for answers about an unthinkable act and the children they never really knew. From New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoultone of the most powerful writers in contemporary fictioncomes a riveting, timely, heartbreaking, and terrifying novel of families in anguish and friendships ripped apart by inconceivable violence.

There are so many topics that people avoid talking about. It can be because they don‘t really want to face reality or maybe cause they just don‘t care. Can anyone ever really know what‘s going through somebody‘s head? Could you stop people from putting and end to their pain?

Finished The Pact at breakfast today, Jodi Picoult did it again!

Emily and Chris never had to say they “found” the loves of their lives, because they have had each other since the day they were born.

So what went tragically wrong that made Emily want to kill herself? Chris could never live without her... yet that fateful day at the carousel, Chris was found holding the gun and Emily‘s dead body.

Heartbreaking and quite the page turner!

Acoleman The Pact was my first Jodi Picoult, I‘ve been hooked ever since. 6y

#NuYear #IdieYouDie It‘s a shock to the tightly woven community when Chris & Emily, friends since birth, seemingly happy well adjusted young adults from two respectable families are discovered to have made a suicide pact. One is dead, one is now facing a murder charge. I strongly disliked this book as it felt contrived. Lots of TW....A story about how well do we know our children, our spouse, our neighbors, our community.

Reggie The first book I ever read of hers was 10 Minutes and I just thought, how crazy. It had bullying, relationship violence, gun violence, and those were just the kids. Lol. She always manages to make you feel someway though. The one with the elephants is the only other one I‘ve read of hers. And I loved it. 7y
Cinfhen I read the elephant one too! I totally get what you‘re saying about JP, but I feel like she manipulates the reader...she does like to throw a whole lot into the pot...above book has plenty of “hot topics” but you know...#spoilers @Reggie 7y
TrishB Haven‘t read this particular one - read a few of hers and generally have that feeling - sometimes controversial for the sake of it. 7y

Mdargusch I‘ve never been a fan of hers. 7y
emilyhaldi Yeah, I‘ve never really been into her books. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
Reviewsbylola I feel like her books are always contrived. That being said, many of them have been compulsively readable for me, including this one. 7y
Leftcoastzen I agree , I read one and started a second, but with layering of hot button issues and manipulation of the reader, I saw how she rolled....meh. 7y

It‘s not that I didn‘t love this book or like it. I think it wasn‘t what I️ was expecting, but not in the way that I️ wanted to be. It was wrapped up too neatly in the end for me and I️ think she could have done a lot more to conclude this one. It‘s such a sensitive topic and even though her research was impeccable, I️ found it to be a little unbelievable some ways. It wasn‘t bad and I️ wouldn‘t say not to read it. Just not my favorite one by her!

Joanne1 I agree. Definitely not her best. 7y

I read this book a while ago now, but it has stuck with me after all this time because it was so emotional. It's beautifully written in the sense that you see the story from all these different viewpoints (as Jodi Picoult does). It's heartbreaking, yet almost understandable and the relationships between the characters will keep you constantly questioning them and yourself.

Y'all. Y'ALL. This book wrecked me. This pretty cover hides a story of love and loss and desperation; of family, friendship, and betrayal. What do you do when the person you love most asks you to do the impossible? Can best friends, marriages find their way through tragedy? This novel has so many levels and is wonderfully written, but it wrung me out.

Karen3 Love her books but they all seem to do that to me. 8y

I often wonder how readers' experiences affect their relationships to novels. Were I not the mother of a son, man cub, would I have been so moved by this?

LauraBeth You probably would have been - when I read a passage like this I read it along two parallels - one as the actual passage and second with me trading in my own personal experiences to make it relevant. So I read this passage for what it was and then re-wrote it of sorts but with my daughter in mind. Does that make sense? I'm beginning to unravel why I'm not a particularly fast reader... 8y
ImaginativeMom @LauraBeth That *does* make sense. But what if we weren't parents? Would that make a difference? 8y
Cinfhen @ImaginativeMom @LauraBeth I absolutely believe who we are, where we come from, where we're going and where we are affect our reading. Books that I couldn't relate to in high school suddenly make sense now that I'm a "few" years passed high school 8y
See All 8 Comments
LauraBeth That's a good question @ImaginativeMom and I think @Cinfhen touches on it in that our experiences do shape how we perceive things so if you had read this before being a mom, then you would have read it differently (I'm guessing with not as much passion for this passage as now). I like to go back and re-read books I read in my 20s and 30s because it's like I'm reading an entirely different book. 8y
ImaginativeMom @LauraBeth @Cinfhen I think you're both right, of course. I think I've just been meditating on how being a parent influences my reading given the books I've read recently. Thanks for your only! 8y
gibblr I think it would absolutely influence your reading/interpretation of it, but I do not think it would necessarily move you any less. Does that make sense? 8y
ImaginativeMom @gibblr It does make sense, but that's what I'm wondering as I sob my way through this book. Are people who have not been parents as moved in books like this as people who have? I know, for instance, that while reading war fiction is powerful for me, it's much more powerful for my husband who is a veteran. This is a ridiculous discussion, of course. Our experience informs our reading. It's just this book. Wow. 8y
gibblr Of course. I'm a mom and I love all things Picoult, so I understand you with this book! 8y
