The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel | Diane Setterfield

There is one thing on which we are agreed: there are too many books in the world to read in a single lifetime; you have to draw the line somewhere.

I rarely read middle grade. However after hearing so many glowing reviews for this book I had to make an exception I am so glad I did. This book evokes feeling wonder (or should I say wunder) that you can only get from an interesting fantasy setting. This is only an introduction into the world of Nevermoor. There is still so much more to discover. I cannot wait for book 2!

This book took me a little while to get into. I think it was because the chapters follow 4 different people's points of views and because the chapters were really short I wanted more time with an individual character to get to know them. However once the characters stories started to merge I began to enjoy reading their stories. Credit to the author's amazing writing that made me seriously dislike one of the characters.

Beck | Meg Rosoff, Mal Peet
Pickpick

If this had not been nominated for the Carnegie award I probably would never have picked it up. However I am very glad that I did. At the beginning of the book I found the writing quite abrupt but as the story progressed it became mesmerising. I was completely and utterly drawn into Beck's life. He does not have an easy life and their is a section in the first part of the book that is very difficult to read due to the nature of the subject.

Good people sometimes do bad things, bad people sometimes do good things. I liked that there were blurred lines between good and evil. Sometimes you just have to make a difficult decision. Wow what an adventure this book was. I think I have fallen in love with the trains. Can't wait to read the next one!

I don't normally read something aimed at this young an age so I was extremely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I thought that the tone was perfect.

Time travel is a complicated thing but the author doesn't treat the audience like they are stupid but gives us a chance to understand these complicated ideas.

This book covers some important themes including coping with grief, family and friendship.

Red Abbey Chronicles: Maresi | Maria Turtschaninoff
Pickpick

This book starts quiet and descriptive. Told by the innocent Maresi who has a thirst for knowledge. She lives on an island just for women, where they can live in peace away from the command of men. There is a mysterious air to the island and the inhabitants of the Red Abbey. This book is written beautifully. 5/5

So I'm going to start by saying that I am not a huge fan of the Alice in wonderland stories. I did, as a teen, enjoy Frank Beddor's looking glass wars. This retelling has a darker, more adult feel to it. I found the ideas within this book interesting but I didn't find myself connected to it worried about the characters. 3/5 stars.

I enjoyed this book. The end was possibly a little predictable but the way it was written kept me interested. How awful to wake up every day and not remember who and where you are. Truly scary!

An Ember in the Ashes | Sabaa Tahir
Pickpick

I LOVED this book. The chapters alternate between 2 POV. Laia our scholar girl looses her family and has to make some tough decisions to try and save her brother. She enters the military academy as a slave. Elias is a student there training to become a deadly weapon of the empire. Pretty similar to others books of this genre.
This book had my heart racing. The world in which it is set is truly brutal with some seriously unpredictable characters.

This is a cute alternative story on how Father Christmas came to be. Fun family story. I listened to the audiobook which is well narrated by Stephen Fry. Perfect for families taking a long car journey over the Christmas period.

What Alice Forgot | Liane Moriarty
Mehso-so

This book entertained and frustrated me in equal measure. In the early pats I got frustrated with the amount of characters who kept stating that surely Alice remembered this or that. It made me want to shout NO SHE HAS AMNESIA! Why did nobody around her understand this? However this did settle down and I was interested to know how the story ended, particularly for Alice's sister who was having troubles of her own.

This book is a fairy tale retelling mash up of sleeping beauty and another (I will let you discover the second for yourself). I particularly liked the twist in this story. Although a nice short story I did finish it feeling I wanted more. Chris Riddell's illustrations are wonderful and help to set the atmosphere.

Well this book is a little messed up. I struggled with this book particularly at the beginning. My problem with it was the movement between what was happening in the present and things that happened in the past. There was no fluidity to this movement and I sometimes found it difficult to know when things were happening.

This book was so much FUN! I wouldn't say it is perfect but that did not matter because I enjoyed reading it. I am a librarian but this is different. This library hangs between worlds collecting books from different realities. There are a lot of different and interesting creatures and characters. Let's just say that collecting this book is not a piece of cake. 4/5

Horowitz does a very good job of recreating the style of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books. The story line and mystery was interesting. Obviously Watson is our narrator and I like how he explains why this book is published many years after the others. A very clever book.

There are some really interesting characters introduced in this book. We learn more about Harry's family with plenty of fun and danger along the way. This book feels different to the previous 2. We delve deeper into what is possible in the wizarding world and I love it.

Maud is old and forgetful, making her an unreliable narrator for the reader. The story jumps between two mysteries, the present day where her friend Elizabeth is missing and when Maud was a child and the mysterious disappearance of her sister. I liked the way these two stories connected so you could tell that the memories were playing in Maud's mind. 3/5

#booktober #favegraphicnovels is an easy one. It has to be Saga. This is so weird and wonderful. Star crossed lovers on opposite sides of a intergalactic war trying to find a safe place for their daughter. Also included in this strange tale is a royal family of robots, ghosts and a cat that knows when you are lying. What more could you want? Due to graphic scenes this is definitely aimed at an adult audience.
