Beautiful and Damned
Beautiful and Damned | F Scott Fitzgerald
The Beautiful and Damned, first published by Scribner's in 1922, is F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel. It portrays the Eastern elite during the Jazz Age, exploring New York cafe society. As in Fitzgerald's other novels, the characters are complex, especially with respect to marriage and intimacy. The book is believed to be largely based on Fitzgerald's relationship with Zelda Fitzgerald. The Beautiful and Damned tells the story of Anthony Patch, a 1910s socialite and presumptive heir to a tycoon's fortune, his relationship with his wife, Gloria, his service in the army, and his alcoholism."

“When a man speaks he's merely tradition. He has at best a few thousand years back of him. But woman, why, she is the miraculous mouthpiece of posterity.”

1920s' America vibes in this one and a lot of philosophy.
A young, rich and tormented couple leads a decadent and self-destroying life while awaiting a tremendous inheritance.

Not the perfect gem of artistic integrity that Gatbsy is, but still great. follows the social and moral decline of 1910s WASPs Anthony and Gloria Patch. While awaiting an inheritance, they descend into addiction, debauchery, disinheritance, and relationship breakdown. The inheritance is restored at the close, but by then they are damaged A portrait of alcoholism and the idle waiting-to-be-rich and the connections between these phenomena

#OnThisDay in 1922, Charles Scribner's Sons published F. Scott Fitzgerald's sophomore effort The Beautiful and Damned. A review written by Zelda told readers to buy the book so she could purchase "The cutest cloth-of-gold dress." Later in life, Fitzgerald stated "I wish the Beautiful and Damned had been a maturely written book because it was all true. We ruined ourselves—I have never honestly thought that we ruined each other." #HistoryGetsLIT

This is one of those books I always meant to read but never got around to it, so it sat there on my shelf collecting dust. Finally picked it up today, and boy aren't I glad I did. 1/3 through and I'm already lost in the world of New York's café society.

Buechersuechtling I only know “The great Gatsby“ (which I loved when we read it in high school), but I feel I recently am seeing quite a lot of Fitzgerald-posts, so I think I need to read some more of his books, don‘t I❓🤔 4y
Leftcoastzen Starting Over , I got his 1st &2nd novels mixed up.This one is more how to drink yourself to death & squander you early success, sorta .His novels are always somewhat autobiographical, he does capture elements of the Jazz age in this novel.if you were going to try another one I feel this may be more representative (edited) 4y

I usually enjoy Fitzgerald‘s works but this book is a bit of a let-down. This is a story of two over indulged adults who live in the lap of luxury and party themselves into ruin. I detest the characters of Anthony and Gloria, and in a way Fitzgerald has done justice to their characters because they are meant to difficult protagonists. Overall, while the book portrayed the point it was meaning to, the story itself seemed unfulfilling.

LapReader It was based on his life wasn‘t it? 4y
anushareflects @LapReader In a large part it definitely seems auto biographical, but I‘ve often felt most of Fitzgerald‘s books end up being a reflection of his life 4y

I wanted to read a classic, and also felt that maybe the Jazz Age would be a bit escapist right now. But I found it difficult to feel invested in, and the hubris - a man with a small inheritance just flat-out refusing to get a job, because it would be déclassé - especially leading up to the Depression, I just couldn‘t deal.

catiewithac But isn‘t Fitzgerald‘s writing so beautiful? 5y

#inktober day 1: An illustration of a 1922 writing by Zelda Fitzgerald humorously reviewing her husband‘s novel The Beautiful and Damned in the New York Tribune. Her review is tinged with self-consciousness as she mockingly portrays herself as Scott‘s selfish wife, then discusses & defends the character of Gloria, an analogue of Zelda herself—right down to the bits that Scott stole from her diaries. #fscottfitzgerald #zeldafitzgerald #comic #art

Hm. This was a re-read, so I certainly went in with an expectation. I wanted to enjoy this much more than I did, and like I said in my last post, I just don‘t think I liked Anthony and Gloria - if anyone else has read this, I think we can all agree you‘re not supposed to like them lol - but that may have distracted me from the other aspects of the book. I won‘t give it a “pan” at this point though.

This is Trainspotting before it was even in Welsh‘s mind- hell years before he was born! The downward spiral of our not so likable protagonist and his equally unlikable vain paramour just never lets up- leaving an ending that is hardly satisfactory even with the reversal of fortunes. Some visceral stuff even now years later- one sees why Fitzgerald is a genius.

Hopefully this will be enough motivation to finish The Beautiful and Damned - I‘m struggling to get into it (even though I‘m on page 149).
