Rad American Women A-Z
Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries who Shaped Our History . . . and Our Future! | Kate Schatz
55 posts | 44 read | 41 to read
"This is not a book. This is a guest list for a party of my heroes. Thank you for inviting us."--Lemony Snicket, author of A Series of Unfortunate Events books"I feel honored to be included in this book. Women need to take radical steps to become feminists, and to be strong to fight for their rights and those of others facing oppression and discrimination. The world needs rad women to create a just society."--Dolores Huerta, Labor Leader, Civil Rights Activist"It's almost always with a chuckle that I view a cartoon image of myself. But to see cartoon-me positioned (alphabetically) amongst so many of my women heroes and role models . . . well, I just broke down and cried. Happy tears. I surely hope that this one-of-a-kind collection of radical American women reaches the hands of all children who want to grow up and become amazing women."--Kate Bornstein, author of My New Gender Workbook"Any alphabet book for children where 'P is for Patti' Smith and 'X is for the women whose names we don't know' is something I can recommend, especially when the book is as well written, representationally diverse and vividly illustrated as this one."--Francesca Lia Block, author of Dangerous Angels: The Weetzie Bat Books"I was totally in rapture reading this book. Bold women, bold colors, and fierce black paper cutouts. I cheer these histories of women who fight not for war or country or corporation, but for EVERYONE! I can't wait for my son to read this."--Nikki McClure, Illustrator of All in a Day"I need 2 of these books, one to read to all the kids in my life and one to rip the illustrations out of so I can frame them! This MUST HAVE super fun read fills in the missing pieces in so many kids' (and grown-ups') educations. Couldn't recommend it enough."--Kathleen Hanna, singer, Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and The Julie Ruinie RuiLike all A-Z books, this one illustrates the alphabetbut instead of "A is for Apple", A is for Angelaas in Angela Davis, the iconic political activist. B is for Billie Jean King, who shattered the glass ceiling of sports; C is for Carol Burnett, who defied assumptions about women in comedy; D is for Dolores Huerta, who organized farmworkers; and E is for Ella Baker, who mentored Dr. Martin Luther King and helped shape the Civil Rights Movement. And the list of great women continues, spanning several centuries, multiple professions, and 26 diverse individuals. There are artists and abolitionists, scientists and suffragettes, rock stars and rabble-rousers, and agents of change of all kinds. The book includes an introduction that discusses what it means to be "rad" and "radical," an afterword with 26 suggestions for how you can be "rad," and a Resource Guide with ideas for further learning and reading.American history was made by countless radand often radicalwomen. By offering a fresh and diverse array of female role models, we can remind readers that there are many places to find inspiration, and that being smart and strong and brave is rad.Rad American Women will be appreciated by various age groups. It is Common Core aligned for students grades 3 - 8. Pre-school and young children will be captured by the bright visuals and easily modified texts, while the subject matter will stimulate and inspire high-schoolers and beyond.

I‘m using the Rad books with my students these last few post-state-test weeks of school. They‘re really enjoying them and we‘re all learning a lot.

This book had some great representation, being sure to include women from many ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds, one trans woman, one autistic woman, and others. It ended with resources for further reading. The information was great. This didn't feel like a picture book, though. There really weren't illustrations (in the Kindle version), and each woman had several paragraphs of text. #WomensHistory #BooksAboutWomen

This book has a great curation of women and held the interest of my kids—so much so that G chose it as her bedtime book every night from the night she got it as a gift until tonight when we finished it. It was a good mix of familiar faces and women that were new to me. And X was my favorite. ♥️

The kids got this as a Christmas gift and I love it as much as they do. Florence was thrilled that F is for FloJo!

MicheleinPhilly That is so adorable! When I was her age I HATED my name because I never met anyone that shared it and I wasn‘t aware of any celebrities named Michele/Michelle. 5y
Megabooks Awesome! I remember FloJo! 5y
Reviewsbylola We started calling her FloBo when I was pregnant so I guess you could say FloJo is her namesake. 🤣🤣 She was really into FloJo‘s story—at one point it said FloJo could run super fast and Florence shouted “just like me! I run fast too!” 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣🤣 @MicheleinPhilly 5y

So great. A mix of well-known, not so well-known, and the page for the letter X, for the women whose names we don't know. Fantastic information, and encouragement to action. I loved that it ended with 26 things the reader can do, and a call to find out more about the women who weren't included, but deserve to be known.

I previously read Rad Women Worldwide and liked it a lot. This one isn't written quite as well but it's still good and I would recommend it for kids. The variety of people chosen is excellent and I was especially happy to see Temple Grandin for the letter T.

This book presents 26 US-American women, who did great things: artists, activists, scientists etc. I really liked their choices (of course with 26 people there is always something and someone missing, but still). I had problems with a few phrases and descriptions, but in general a great book to introduce younger readers to interesting women (and to inspired them to create change themselves).

#feminism

violentecstasy One of my faves. They managed to hit a pretty wide range of ladies. 8y

This young man has been reading Rad Women A-Z at night out loud to me. Last night was F for Flo-Jo. I almost died of pride when he got this out of his book order and immediately flipped to the front saying, "I bet A is for Alice Paul!" It wasn't, but that my 9 year old knows about Alice Paul makes my heart happy. He's a keeper, folks!
