I'm not very good at Litsy, but sometimes I read lines that remind me I have a place to share them! Loving this debut collection by Lesley Nneka Arimah. It's been a while since I really fell in love with a short story collection by an author I didn't already know. 💚💛

THUG has been out for only a few weeks, but I feel years behind only starting it now! Angie Thomas has an amazing career ahead of her, and she deserves every ounce of success her debut novel is receiving! ⭐️

Alterations | Stephanie Scott
post image

*client book alert* Sorry, couldn't resist sharing release day joy for ALTERATIONS by Stephanie Scott! Inspired by the movie, Sabrina, it's about a shy, invisible girl named Amelia who finds herself caught between two wealthy brothers in Miami after a summer of reinvention in NYC. Super romantic, funny, & empowering, and (in my opinion) exactly what's needed at the end of 2016!

Thoroughly enjoying Insecure on HBO, so I finally bought Issa Rae's book. I'm told I belong in Lena Dunham's or Mindy Kaling's demographic, but this is the 1st "Millennial celebrity" essay collection that feels relatable to me. It's also, unsurprisingly, very smart and funny!

Herland: Easyread Comfort Edition | Charlotte Perkins Gilman

"Unable to believe their eyes, they promptly set out to find some men, convinced that since 'this is a civilized country... there must be men.'"

Found this rare gem by one of my favorite underrated early feminist writers, Charlotte Perkins Gilman (known mainly for the phenomenal story, The Yellow Wallpaper). History won't forget her if I have anything to say about it.

Helped my man get organized today & now giving him a plug on Litsy! Here are his excellent picture books, The Snurtch and I Don't Like Koala, along with his "grown up novel," Man In The Empty Suit. I'm only semi-biased, but I'd never live with a bad writer. ?

The Mothers: A Novel | Brit Bennett

"All good secrets have a taste before you tell them..." begins the flap copy for THE MOTHERS, and since I just got this beautiful ARC, that's all I'll quote from it. So far the prose is washing over me & I can't really describe it another way.

hwheaties Gorgeous cover. 8y

"By writing."

Because sometimes all I can offer are books. #BlackLivesMatter

(Cut out of the photo is Pointe by Brandy Colbert... still figuring out cropping on here.)

SarahKay Toni Morrison's books were hugely influential on me as a teenager. This was one of my favorites. 8y
sarahlapolla I didn't read her until college, but I don't think I would've fully appreciated her before then. I'm so happy I found that edition of Sula. That cover!! 8y
DrBird That's a great pile o books! Tayari Jones first book LEAVING ATLANTA is soooooo good. 8y

Bleeding Earth | Kaitlin Ward
post image

💜 Pride Month: YA fiction edition! YA is more than just coming out stories, which are important but not the only thing LGBT teens can do. BLEEDING EARTH (*client book*) is a psychological horror in which a lesbian main character & her girlfriend fight to survive in a decaying world. 💜

misswendyd I saw you talking about BLEEDING EARTH on Twitter! Definitely need to read that one. 8y
sarahlapolla I'm quite proud of that weird little book, but fair warning, the title does not lie: it is bloody! 8y

💜 Pride Month: Adult fiction edition! Some of these authors broke boundaries while others simply broke my heart. (Could use more L & T on the LGBT side of my fiction shelf, so recommendations are welcome!) 💜

misswendyd Sarah Waters! My favorite living (adult) novelist. I need to read Isherwood as well, he's my husband's favorite. 8y
sarahlapolla Thanks for the rec! 8y
marita Amber Dawn! I've read her memoir Poetry Saved My Life and have heard great things about her novel and collection of poetry. 8y

Jackaby | William Ritter

I try to recommend William Ritter's "Jackaby" novels any chance I get. Published as YA, which sort of suits it, but adults who don't venture to that section of the bookstore are likely missing out on a very clever, sophisticated Sherlock-meets-Doctor Who paranormal mystery series.

misswendyd I just bought the first one recently! I've heard good things. 8y

One of my favorite opening paragraphs to any novel ever. Like most of Shirley Jackson's work, this is a master class in craft.

misswendyd I still haven't read any SJ. :( Must remedy. 9y
sarahlapolla You must! Her short stories are also wonderful and creepy. After you read The Lottery it'll be hard not to hold all dystopian to that standard! 9y
Mel_Howard This book wasn't something I would normally enjoy, but it was so well written with such amazing characters, I couldn't put it down. 8y
