In my mind, voter suppression is the number one issue of equality today. Its history is long and bloody. Now it may be less gory, but it‘s def no less oppressive. Anderson lays out everything up until about 2018. Then the daily news takes over. Necessary reading for every American. She makes it easy to wrap your brain around the unwrappable.

Megabooks Stacking! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Megabooks It‘s a must. And just 5-6 hours on audio. 3y
Leftcoastzen I got a lot out of this book. 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen Yes, it‘s short but mighty! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m so glad you finally got to this one! I read it right before the last election in October or November…it‘s so powerful, and the problem seems to be getting worse instead of better! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Voter suppression does seem progressively worse and more widespread. So the topic is just as relevant as ever. I admired that you could read it at that point — I was knee deep is everything politics and it was too much. Then it was recently on sale at Audible and I grabbed it. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa It was one of the first books I picked fir #SheSaid, so I had motivation to actually read it. And at the time as they were removing drop boxes etc…then it seemed so relevant…but it‘s gotten even more so since. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Good strategy to encourage yourself to read it!! 3y

I read this short book back in early 2017. Lately (or every week since then), it‘s been coming to mind a lot. Found it on Scribd, so I‘m going to give it a listen. Might be the most important 1 hr. 47 min. book around!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa It was so good the first time, I bet a reread will be scarier! Good luck, I can‘t wait to see how it goes! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think so too. I‘m curious to hear the author read it too. 5y
Leftcoastzen Very nice review! It‘s a powerful read.I borrowed it from the library, should find a copy to own.direct ,smart and not sensationalized to the current “moment “. 5y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen Thanks. It‘s worth having your own copy, if you found it valuable the first time through. 5y
Christine I‘ve almost read this so many times. Putting it on my list of books to get to in October. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Christine It‘s so short, and worth every minute. Hope you agree! 5y

I had four 5-star reads and lots of 4-star ones. So I picked a couple of 4s and bumped them to 5s. Here are my #top6reads for 2019 so far. My four nonfiction choices would qualify for my #resistlist, so I guess that‘s my theme. And the debut author, along with my current “favorite.”

Thanks for starting this post @Cinfhen —it‘s been fun to see people‘s choices. #top6

MallenNC It has been fun to see everyone‘s picks! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MallenNC It has! And making my TBR longer, as usual. 5y
catebutler Love seeing everyone‘s picks! I especially love all the non-fiction in yours. Isn‘t it funny to see what‘s made our lists so far!? I‘m quite an eclectic reader, so I was surprised to find many of mine fell under the same umbrella. Must be the mood I‘ve subconsciously been in. 5y

I‘ve avoided posting quotes from this book because they can be so distressing for people. It‘s a group of hard-to-read, but vital essays in understanding 45. I can only manage one, sometimes two, a day. Today‘s essay talks about tyrants, their followers, and the society around them. It helps me understand things, especially after the horrible events in Christchurch yesterday.

CaitlinR Thanks for the post. Sounds like an interesting and important read. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @CaitlinR You‘re welcome. It‘s interesting, for sure. Important to be informed, but not easy. 6y

I‘ve been listening to a podcast interview with the author of this book. It‘s quite fascinating, and I‘ll be reading her book soon, I think. It‘s a different, but connected, take on systemic misogyny. She‘s brilliant! Podcast link below ⬇️

I bought this shortly after the 2016 elections. The title described my thoughts. Then I put the book on my shelf because I was feeling too raw. Recently I thought, “I‘d better read this before it‘s obsolete.” Well, the good news is, it isn‘t likely to ever be 100% obsolete. If you read politically, try this book. For me, every essay was worth the time.

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s funny! You‘ll be interested to see who the contributors are. Some have gone on to new, more public positions. 6y

This book‘s been on my shelf far too long. Even though it was compiled right after the 2016 election, the concerns still exist. Obvi. And I‘m proud to say I got through 90 pages without feeling sick to my stomach. But that‘s all for today ... back to Mary Oliver poems until I feel like I can continue with this book. #resistlist #readersresist #somedaysitsalltoomuchtoabsorb #notmypresident

I am so glad to be reading this at this exact moment in time. I have been canvassing and organizing for our local Democratic candidate for the House. First time I‘ve ever done this kind of work. And this memoir is reminding me of the bigger issues at the heart of the matter. The idea of the “steadfastness of truth” is striking a chord, for sure. (Part 1 of 2)

I‘m not very far into this book, but I‘ve been highlighting a LOT. The author pulls in many statistics that have left me gobsmacked.

Leftcoastzen I love to see that in cold hard type! So many people don‘t GET this. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen I‘m sending this image to my business-owning friend. He‘s always defending his right to keep wages low. Now I have the comeback! 7y
Aimeesue Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed does a great job of showing what trying to live on minimum wage jobs does to people. Honestly, it's exhausting and horrible. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Aimeesue I have that one on my shelf too. This one is about fighting the injustice also, which I imagine must seem overwhelming. 7y
