I read this short book back in early 2017. Lately (or every week since then), it‘s been coming to mind a lot. Found it on Scribd, so I‘m going to give it a listen. Might be the most important 1 hr. 47 min. book around!

My original review is here: http://thebibliophage.com/book-review-tyranny-timothy-snyder/

Riveted_Reader_Melissa It was so good the first time, I bet a reread will be scarier! Good luck, I can‘t wait to see how it goes! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think so too. I‘m curious to hear the author read it too. 5y
Leftcoastzen Very nice review! It‘s a powerful read.I borrowed it from the library, should find a copy to own.direct ,smart and not sensationalized to the current “moment “. 5y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Leftcoastzen Thanks. It‘s worth having your own copy, if you found it valuable the first time through. 5y
Christine I‘ve almost read this so many times. Putting it on my list of books to get to in October. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Christine It‘s so short, and worth every minute. Hope you agree! 5y

Great evening last night with fellow Democrats, raising money for our local organization and candidates. Former Acting Director of the FBI, Andrew McCabe, was the speaker. He talked not just about the topics of his book, but also about getting involved and having hope. He did no trash talking, but lots of straight talking about the current administration. Great night!

I‘ve avoided posting quotes from this book because they can be so distressing for people. It‘s a group of hard-to-read, but vital essays in understanding 45. I can only manage one, sometimes two, a day. Today‘s essay talks about tyrants, their followers, and the society around them. It helps me understand things, especially after the horrible events in Christchurch yesterday.

CaitlinR Thanks for the post. Sounds like an interesting and important read. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @CaitlinR You‘re welcome. It‘s interesting, for sure. Important to be informed, but not easy. 6y

I‘ve been listening to a podcast interview with the author of this book. It‘s quite fascinating, and I‘ll be reading her book soon, I think. It‘s a different, but connected, take on systemic misogyny. She‘s brilliant! Podcast link below ⬇️

Pickpick

I bought this shortly after the 2016 elections. The title described my thoughts. Then I put the book on my shelf because I was feeling too raw. Recently I thought, “I‘d better read this before it‘s obsolete.” Well, the good news is, it isn‘t likely to ever be 100% obsolete. If you read politically, try this book. For me, every essay was worth the time.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Oh my gosh! I did the same and it is still sitting in my shelf! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s funny! You‘ll be interested to see who the contributors are. Some have gone on to new, more public positions. 6y

This book‘s been on my shelf far too long. Even though it was compiled right after the 2016 election, the concerns still exist. Obvi. And I‘m proud to say I got through 90 pages without feeling sick to my stomach. But that‘s all for today ... back to Mary Oliver poems until I feel like I can continue with this book. #resistlist #readersresist #somedaysitsalltoomuchtoabsorb #notmypresident

I‘ve read way less books this year than last. Because I‘ve read more news and analysis. Also because I‘ve spent time working for political causes that I care about.

Written by the author of what may end up being my favorite book of the year, here‘s a perspective on why art and literature remain important, even when the country and world are in crisis. I think she hits the nail on the head!

Cinfhen Love your hashtags 🙌🏻 6y
abbielistenstobooks I started reading heavily right around the election of 2016, as an escape. And it has been useful for that! The news is too much for me. 6y
alisiakae I‘ve been reading more since the 2016 election! I do need to take news breaks more often, but only for a day or so. 6y

Emilymdxn I love this. This has been my heaviest reading year ever and I‘ve bought a lot of books for friends and family this year - both to share diverse stories and viewpoints in fiction and memoir (more important now than ever), and to educate ourselves about what‘s going on in the world. I started this year wanting to resist what was happening in Britain but didn‘t understand politics enough to try, and working on that with books has been very importsnt (edited) 6y
Lissa00 Thanks for sharing this! Books have definitely been my therapy these past few years. 6y
Melissa_J I used to be a news junkie, now I find I can‘t read it in any great detail - I get too depressed and anxious about events. 6y

So here‘s my day in a capsule: I got mad. I am heartsick. I canvassed in the nasty cold rain (had to stop but finishing tomorrow). And now I‘m starting the tagged book. The fun, spooky reads are great, but I‘m just feeling more like taking action.

Regi_C I'm super angry, too. The temple is near my alma mater and is in my hometown. 6y
Arcana Horrified and heartbroken 💔💔💔 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Regi_C I was born in Pgh also, but haven‘t lived there since I was twelve. My SIL and her family attend another temple in that part of town. We were on pins and needles until we heard back from her. It‘s just so many kinds of horrible. And yet people still defend their right to carry guns. 🤬🤷🏼‍♀️🤬🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y

Eggbeater It has been a horrific week for our country. Sometimes I don't know who we are anymore, but there are still people like you who are willing to help and that gives me hope and motives me. 6y
SexyCajun 🌊🌊 #bluewave must happen. The Orange man is spreading nothing but hate 🌊🌊 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Eggbeater You‘re right about the horror. We‘ve had this happen before, and it‘s always the citizens not the politicians who pull us through. I hope you‘ll join us! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @SexyCajun Agreed. My House district is so incredibly red. But we‘ve been working to build our blue coalition for nearly two years. I‘m hoping we can pull it off! 6y
Eggbeater @BarbaraTheBibliophage I'm helping pass out blue sample ballots at the polls in Nov. 6th 6y

kspenmoll Heart breaking. 💙 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @kspenmoll Yes It sure is! 😢😢 6y
CarolynM I wish you strength in your efforts and success in your campaign. I don't like to comment much on politics in other people's countries but I hate the way certain elements in mine are copying the tactics they see working elsewhere. Leaders are supposed to unite us not divide us. 6y
My_novel_obsession Thank you for what you are doing and sending positive, healing thoughts 6y
HardcoverHearts These are truly harrowing times. If it weren‘t for books right now, I would lose my mind. Best wishes for turning that red district blue! 6y
alisiakae My husband attended Tree of Life when we were at Pitt. I found out as I was walking out the door to volunteer at Early Voting yesterday. It was such a hard day, and now we‘re off to Hebrew School at our synagogue this morning. 😢😢😢 The amount of hatred and violence in America this week is horrific. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @CarolynM I agree about leaders. Sadly, the US election system allowed someone who didn‘t win the popular vote to become President. And he‘s just diving us further. I hold out hope that the legislators we elect this time will create more balance in Washington. But sometimes it just feels scary and hopeless. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Anovelobsession Thanks—it‘s a rough road but if not me, then who? 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @HardcoverHearts It‘s been hard to read at some times. And at others, I just want to make a blanket fort and hide with my books all day. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 for our district. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft I think you and I are both putting our emotions into volunteer time. But days like today make me feel like I‘ll never be able to do enough to stop these trends. I‘m not Jewish, but I‘m with the worldwide Jewish community today in solidarity. Sending big hugs and love. 💙💙 6y

The other night one of my friends was feeling like we, in 2018, aren‘t accomplishing much with protests, marches, and sit-ins. And I shared how much reading this book has affected my position on them. Always march. Always protest. Never stop educating and speaking your mind against what you feel is wrong. Congressman John Lewis is still doing it, so can I. #readersresist #nfornonfiction #lmpbc #groupn

I am so glad to be reading this at this exact moment in time. I have been canvassing and organizing for our local Democratic candidate for the House. First time I‘ve ever done this kind of work. And this memoir is reminding me of the bigger issues at the heart of the matter. The idea of the “steadfastness of truth” is striking a chord, for sure. (Part 1 of 2)
