Study in Drowning Collector's Deluxe Limited Edition
Study in Drowning Collector's Deluxe Limited Edition | Ava Reid
33 posts | 28 read | 31 to read
Bestselling author Ava Reid's YA debut, the haunting stand-alone dark academia fantasy, instant Indie and #1 New York Times bestselling A Study in Drowning, is now available in a gorgeous package that also includes bonus content written by the author. With intricate foil case design, antique-style endpapers, filigree cover, custom designed edges, and bonus content, it's a true collector's edition. Quantities will be limited, so be sure to preorder now!Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. She's had no choice. Since childhood, she's been haunted by visions of the Fairy King. She's found solace only in the pages of Angharad--author Emrys Myrddin's beloved epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King and then destroys him. Effy's tattered, dog-eared copy is all that's keeping her afloat at Llyr's prestigious architecture college. So when Myrddin's family announces a contest to redesign the late author's estate, Effy feels certain this is her destiny. But Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task: a musty, decrepit house on the brink of crumbling into a hungry sea. And when Effy arrives, someone else has already made a temporary home there. Preston Hloury, a stodgy young literature scholar, is studying Myrddin's papers and is determined to prove her favorite author is a fraud. As the two rivals piece together clues about the reclusive author's legacy, dark forces, both mortal and magical, conspire against them--and the truth may bring them both to ruin.Part historical fantasy, part rivals-to-lovers romance, part Gothic mystery, and all haunting, dreamlike atmosphere, Ava Reid's powerful YA debut is also an unflinching indictment of institutions that sacrifice young girls on the altar of men's "genius" and a gripping read that will stay with you long after its final page."Achingly atmospheric and beautifully sharp." --Rory Power, New York Times bestselling author of Wilder Girls

I‘m not normally a YA reader but the Welsh mythology dark academia fantasy seduced me here and I loved it. Quite dark and complex for a YA fantasy (with some tw‘s needed around older men putting pressure on younger women) but the writing was beautiful and world building was very original, really swallowed me up.

1. Both! I love to compare and argue about them, and I'm not a 'book is always better' person. Tagging my current read that I'd love to see a beautiful indie movie of.

2. Laundry - laundry is my main job in my flat.

3. Why not both

4. Vanilla

5. Pen

6. All of the above I just wanna chat

7. Be one

8. Fish

9. Online

10. Massive rainstorm, best weather always always

Eggs I love a good rainy day for reading 👏🏻🥳👌🏼 3mo

This one was…. Grim. A lot bleaker than I was expecting from the TikTok review I saw recommending it 😅 it should come with some trigger warnings about creepy men too. I think some would adore it but it didn‘t quite have the vibe I was expecting which lessened my enjoyment. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

What a thrilling page turner! Iloved the gothic horror vibes, the pride and prejudice banter, the foreboding, the clues everywhere- nothing the author writes is a coincidence! The writing was beautiful, I was making so many quotes. Wished for a bit more length in the showdown though it was cleverly delivered. Well deserved HEA with strong women. The last line made me gasp and kept me second-guessing.

Quick read ... and there's a lot going on here. I liked a lot about this book but didn't connect w the writing. My standards for feminist ya may be a bit high bc I read Anatomy & Immortality recently, perhaps why this is a "good, not great" for me.

A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid is a good fit for readers who are interested in a dark and atmospheric story that explores themes of mystery, fantasy, and the blurred lines between reality and myth. ⬇️

suvata When architecture student Effy Sayre wins a contest to design her favorite author's family manor, she finds herself on a remote, crumbling estate filled with disturbing secrets. With the help of a rival student, Effy must unravel a decades-old mystery, but there are dark forces, both mortal and magical, conspiring against them, and the truth may bring them both to ruin.

If you have #StoryGraph you might join me in a one-week ReadAlong of A Study in Drowning. It starts today, but I just found it so I joined it. I like the idea of doing a ReadAlong for one week as opposed to one month.

I had seen some mixed reviews for this book, so I was a bit apprehensive when my Libby hold finally came in, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find I did enjoy this a lot! The slow burn romance was well-written and it touched on themes of misogyny in academia. Some similarities to Emily Wilde‘s Encyclopedia of Fairies (although I thought that one was better). My main criticism is that the central academic mystery was super obvious to me.

I really enjoyed this one. The world building and characters made this a fun read...and maybe part of a series??? The e ding kinda hints at it...but even so it was a fun read. This was a #Goldsboro book! #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

A very enjoyable read, set in a mythological world, a famous writer has died, and one of his books was very well known. Effy loved his book, so jumps at the chance to design the house where he lived. Also, at this house is Preston, who is looking at the written material left by the author. But things are not what they seem in this strange house and the strange son.

I have 3 beautiful copies of this book, so I really wanted to love it. Sadly, it irritated me.

The MC is wetter than a haddock's underpants & prejudiced & whiny to boot.

Also the BLUSHING, oh my days, if I'd taken a drink every time someone's cheeks got warm, I'd be wrecked!

Hiraeth itself was a triumph. A decaying, waterlogged house on a crumbling hill, oozing atmosphere & mystery. There were things I liked, but disappointing overall.

⭐️⭐️

julesG 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Love your review 13mo
Bklover Great review! ❤️ 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly That‘s unfortunate, it sounds really good! Is she wet because she‘s been crying or because of the drowning mentioned in the title? 😂 13mo

RaeLovesToRead @julesG @Bklover Thanks! 😁 (I may have plagiarised the haddock line from Blackadder, haha) 13mo
RaeLovesToRead @Clare-Dragonfly Don't let me put you off trying it! If you like YA, it was certainly an atmospheric read. The MC was a total drip though (and so mean to poor Preston for no reason!) Seriously, I'm not even exaggerating about the blushing ☺️ 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly I own one of her other books, so I probably won‘t come near this one until I‘ve read that! 13mo
RaeLovesToRead @Clare-Dragonfly Confession: I hate whimsy! So I would probably steer clear of a book with that title on account of knowing that I'm a MASSIVE GRUMPY KILLJOY! 😅 Reid is clearly a good writer though, so definitely give her a go 🙃 13mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This review made me laugh. I find that wasting time on a so-so book isn't fun, but writing a snarky review makes me feel better! 🤣 13mo
GondorGirl I really enjoyed the book, but I can see where it wouldn't be for everyone. 13mo
GondorGirl @Clare-Dragonfly I really enjoyed Study In Drowning and Wolf and the Woodsman, but HATED Juniper and Thorn. 😅 13mo
RaeLovesToRead @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Thanks! 😅 I had to be quite concise cause I ran out of letters, but I go into more detail in my GR review 😊 13mo
RaeLovesToRead @GondorGirl I'm glad you loved it! I really wanted to 😭 I did think the atmosphere and the blending of fairytale and reality was cleverly done, but everytime I tried to fall into the story, something happen to annoy me 🙁 13mo
Branwen You already know how much I loved this one! 😂 But honestly, I can completely agree with your points! 💕📚 13mo

I just picked up a new subcontract to make sporrans for another small leatherworking business. They're a little fiddly to sew, but I'm enjoying a process quite a bit. It's the kind of project I don't have to think about too much, so I can put on an audiobook and sort of zone out. I'm halfway through the tagged book and I'm really enjoying the dark fairytale vibe.

"It was an eternal feeling, this sense of being unwelcome. No matter where she was, Effy was always afraid she was not wanted."

Ooof! That line hit me right in the feels!

Guess what? I'm on vacation this week! ? That means I get this entire week to myself to read, walk in the park, cuddle with the kitties, and eat lots of snacks! ?? ? Starting the week off right with a forestry walk and more of this book which I'm loving so far! ?

Karisa What a wonderful way to start the week! I have next week off and am counting the days! 14mo

What‘s more dangerous—a sinking mansion full of secrets, a vicious and enthralling Fairy King, or the forces that have historically silenced and subjugated young women in academia? Fans of Mexican Gothic and The Hazel Wood, this Welsh folklore-infused dark academia fantasy will sweep you under and leave you drowning in all its lush and eerie, mysterious and romantic, utterly immersive, gothic splendor.
