The Bear
The Bear: A Novel | Claire Cameron
A powerful suspense story narrated by a young girl who must fend for herself and her little brother after a brutal bear attack While camping with her family on a remote island, five-year-old Anna awakes in the night to the sound of her mother screaming. A rogue black bear, three hundred pounds of fury, is attacking the family's campsite -- and pouncing on her parents as prey.At her dying mother's faint urging, Anna manages to get her brother into the family's canoe and paddle away. But when the canoe runs aground on the edge of the woods, the sister and brother must battle hunger, the elements, and a wilderness alive with danger. Lost and completely alone, they find that their only hope resides in Anna's heartbreaking love for her family, and her struggle to be brave when nothing in her world seems safe anymore. This is a story with a small narrator and a big heart. Cameron gracefully plumbs Anna's young perspective on family, responsibility, and hope, charting both a tragically premature loss of innocence and a startling evolution as Anna reasons through the impossible situations that confront her. Lean and confident, and told in the innocent and honest voice of a five-year-old, THE BEAR is a transporting tale of loss -- but also a poignant and surprisingly funny adventure about love and the raw instincts that enable us to survive.

Tonight‘s bedtime story- it is not on Litsy sadly. In the UK we have an incredibly consumerist tradition of feeling Christmas has truly begun when that years John Lewis (a department store) advert comes on TV. They are a master of pulling in the heart strings and choosing excellent songs to cover. And they always make a book to go with the advert. My boys love this one #WGword search 240 pts #wintergames #teamgamesleighers

This was really interesting between the storyline and the writing. I am already afraid of getting lost in the woods and the critters who live there, but this takes it to a whole different level because it feels so real. It‘s written in the same style as Room from the perspective of a young child. It really captures the raw emotion of fear and terror that can be found when you need to survive.

Santhoshthomas Good naration 6y

I cannot even begin to convey just how awful this book is. I hated the children, who happen to be the main characters, and prayed the bear would eat them so the book would end and put me out of my misery. I cannot believe this will go down as the first book I read in 2019. Awful.

A horrifying account of a bear attack on a remote island in Algonquin Park, told in the voice of 5-year-old Anna as she struggles to care for her little brother after their parents are mauled to death.

4 ☆ Holy cow.. based off a true story in Algonquin Park Ontario. Bear was a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed the rollercoaster ride of emotion I felt.. so good but oh so painful to read. Idk how many times while reading I thought of my own little ones, the what if‘s.. all as told by Anna age 5.. so heartbreaking but genius to use a child‘s voice.
Thanks @erzascarletbookgasm for another unforgettable book - thats 2 for 2! 🤓👍🏻

This is honestly hard to read. I‘m completely loving it, but it‘s just so heart wrenching to read from the perspective of a 5 year old girl, who‘s trying to survive with her 3 year old brother in Algonquin Park after her parents were attacked by a black bear.

I had four credits on Hoopla that I had to use before the end of the month. I chose four books that are in my physical shelf so I can read the book, and listen to the audiobook at the same time. Here‘s what I chose. Book 4/4 ☺️ I‘ve heard mixed things about this book, but I‘m a sucker for books told in the perspective of children.

Have any of you guys read this one? What did you think?

BookishTrish I liked it. I don‘t remember always believing the narrator was a child, but I loved The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and this plays a similar field 6y
JennyM It was a good few years ago that I read it, but I think I bailed. 6y

Similar to the book Room, in that it's written from a young child's perspective. But it has bears!

I had a beastly, yet unwilling book model. Thank you, Lola cat.

Written in the voice of a 5 year-old who is present when her parents are attacked by a bear, some of the passages in this book can be confusing and tense. It was challenging to understand what Anna was experiencing, and some things take time to become clear.

This was a story about love, belonging, and trauma. It was challenging but I felt rewarded for engaging with it.

The bear was a very hard book to get though because it is from the point of view of a 5 year old and thus doesn't make sense at some point however it is a beautiful story of survival and how far you'd go to protect those you love.

This one is tough to review because parts are brilliant and others don't work as well. Scary idea and very tense throughout. The beginning is terrifying and the last section made me feel all the feelings. The middle section was a tad repetitive and meandered a bit. Mainly the problem is the voice. Cameron is able to convey a 5-year-old's stream-of-conscious thinking but it sometimes feels forced and not entirely believable.

Whoa, this book is intense! A five-year old must survive with her toddler brother in the woods after her parents are killed by a wild bear. Told from her point of view, the juxtaposition between her innocent, stream-of-conscious voice and the horror of the situation is chilling. Paired with much-needed afternoon coffee and annoyed Skippy. Oh, and aren't those end papers gorgeous? 😍

Just started, finding it surprisingly enthralling. I usually have more trouble adjusting to a book written from the perspective of a child, but it is done so effectively here. And, oh god, the lamb leg.

Bailedbailed

The author does a great job at capturing the voice of a 5 year old girl & that's exactly why I'm bailing on this. I really don't like the narration in this, I really have to push myself to keep reading & I'd rather just spend the time with one of the other books on my giant TBR.
