While reading this, I enjoyed it. The story is full of hope, wonderful characters & the narrator is endearing. But after finishing it, I just can't say I would read it again. The writing is simple & repetitive (which suits the story well, but it was irritating), there's too much chanting/football for me-I'm not a huge sports ball fan, & ...I don't know...there was just something missing for me.

Although the ending made me angry, I loved this. The characters are so flawed but that's what made them real. The writing is fantastic & I really struggled to put this book down. I think Whittall does a great job at showing how difficult this situation is for families involved. The struggle Joan goes through emotionally is so well done & even though it's frustrating & the answers seem obvious, you can't stop loving someone at the drop of a hat.

14 years ago I read a couple hundred pages of this, had the worst nightmares of my life & quickly gave that copy away.
I'm 26. I'm a grown woman. I can face my fears. I ain't afraid of no clowns!

Plus if I hide under the blanket in bed no monsters can get me. 💁🏻

QueenAnne Love this post 😝 I was severely traumatized by the movie when I was about 5 😝 made me hate clowns, but also made me a SK fan 😝 you'll be perfectly safe in bed! Think happy thoughts! (No clowns or balloons or anything!) 🎉🍀📚🐶👗🐣🌹🌝🍒🍟🍔🌭🍕🍝🍰🎂🍷🍸🍹🍪🍩🏅🏆🛀🏻🎤🎨🎡🎠🏝🗽🌈🎆💎🎈🎊🎁🏳️‍🌈💞🎶 8y
releasekarma @QueenAnne the movie scared me so badly when I was a kid, my friends older brother had us watch it when we were around 6 & it was terrifying. I remember my parents having no idea & hiring a clown for my birthday the following month. I've been scared of clowns ever since😜 I'll definitely have to scatter some friendly Disney movies throughout this book hahaha 8y
ReadingOver50 I must say I am not a fan of the new cover. I do love the book though. 8y

QueenAnne @releasekarma oh my 😱😱 poor you! I've had a similar experience with Ronald Mcdonald! My uncle was supposed to watch me and was watching IT, he didn't know I came downstairs and was watching! So a few days later we were eating at McD and Ronald walked in, that was the only time ever that I didn't finish my fries and burger🍔🍟! Hate clowns ever since hihihi 8y
QueenAnne @releasekarma and those Disney films are a good idea! But maybe not Dumbo hihi (clowns!) 8y
releasekarma @ReadingOver50 yeah, I don't think I've ever come across a King cover I've actually really liked lol. 8y

Bailedbailed

The author does a great job at capturing the voice of a 5 year old girl & that's exactly why I'm bailing on this. I really don't like the narration in this, I really have to push myself to keep reading & I'd rather just spend the time with one of the other books on my giant TBR.

A new favourite. I want to consume everything Julia Elliott has and ever will write.
This book is strange & hard to explain. The beginning half reminds me of Flowers for Algernon (another of my favourites) & then it continues in a direction I wasn't expecting nor could I have predicted. This is a really unique & well written story.

Mehso-so

The writing & setting are beautiful. The world building is fantastic. Unfortunately, I enjoy character driven stories more than plot/setting and this book has weak characters. I wasn't attached to anyone. I do think the way nature was handled in this was great. Nature has no moral compass, it can be brutal & unapologetic. This easily could have been a stereotypical man vs. nature (man = bad nature = good) but it wasn't. Both were cast in grey.

Contrary to what I'm about to say, I did like this. I don't think a lot happens, I don't like Kvothe 83% of the time, I hated the whole Felurian thing. It felt like it took up a huge chunk of the book (it didn't, I was just so bored) & I'm so over Denna's shit, but I couldn't but this down. No matter how annoyed some parts made me, I needed to keep going. The Adem were fascinating, the present time storyline is great. I can't wait for book 3!

This was so close to being a new favourite! The story is exciting, I was intrigued from the very beginning & hooked after a couple interviews. Which is where the problem lies. The interview format this is written in made it very difficult to connect to any of the characters.

Unrelated to this particular photo, some of the panels in this series really look like rough drafts....there's an inconsistent quality in the art throughout this series. It's not because of a change of artist, its something I've noticed throughout both volumes.

Bailedbailed

I had to finally call it quits with this. I made it 234 pages in & there was never a moment where I felt excited to pick this up. There are some really lovely written passages in this, but the characters are unlikable. Not in an intentional way. You're supposed to like them...at least most of them..but I disliked all. When a plot twist came, I didn't care. I have no curiosity towards how life turns out for anyone. And I'm a very curious person.

The Girls: A Novel | Emma Cline
Panpan

I hated the way this was written. Cline uses a lot of short sentences that made the writing seem a little clumsy. The story lacked a good flow. As for Evie, there's not a single thing I liked about her character & considering it's told from her perspective, that causes a lot of issues.

Reviewsbylola I didn't particularly like Cline's writing either. It felt like she was trying too hard. 8y
Yournewfriendsams I really liked the book but I completely agree- Evie seemed like such a brat; I felt bad for her mom. 8y
releasekarma @Reviewsbylola It did feel that way. I'm sure Cline didn't mean for it to, but it just had a very pretentious feel to it. 8y
releasekarma @Yournewfriendsams I really wanted to like this. I was so excited when I first heard about it. I think it'll make a great movie though. 😊 8y

I have a handful of art on me, but this is the only one with a more personal meaning to me. The Dark Tower kept me company when I was too shy to make friends. It was the first story I was completely engrossed in (partially because it was forbidden, I was 9). Now the movie is slowly becoming real
