Nell Crane has never held a boys hand. In a city devastated by an epidemic, where survivors are all missing partsan arm, a leg, an eyeNell has always been an outsider. Her father is the famed scientist who created the biomechanical limbs that everyone now uses. But shes the only one with her machinery on the inside: her heart. Since the childhood operation, she has ticked. Like a clock, like a bomb. And as her community rebuilds, everyone is expected to contribute to the societys good . . . but how can Nell live up to her fathers revolutionary ideas when she has none of her own? Then she finds a lost mannequins hand while salvaging on the beach, and inspiration strikes. Can Nell build her own companion in a world that fears advanced technology? The deeper she sinks into this plan, the more she learns about her cityand her father, who is hiding secret experiments of his own. Sarah Maria Griffins haunting literary debut will entrance fans of Patrick Nesss Chaos Walking series, Paolo Bacigalupis Ship Breaker, and Emily St. John Mandels Station Eleven.

This is a post-apocalyptic Frankenstein retelling. It was okay. The twist ending was good.

Very much enjoyed this pick from #EndOfTheWorldReadingClub

If anyone is looking for a book for the "ace character" prompt for #Pop22 this would fit the bill (frustratingly for me as I need to find another book for this prompt!). Whilst it's not explicitly mentioned that the main character is ace/aro it's very much implied by the plot.

I love the detail that goes into the gifts in each #EndOfTheWorldReadingClub package! The scarf is beautiful, and the batteries did indeed fall out of the package as I did not expect both!

A weird and wonderful reimagining of the Frankenstein story that takes place in a dystopian society where all AI technology has been destroyed. Nell Crane feels like an outsider because of the obvious ticking of her mechanical heart. After finding a detached mannequin hand, she wonders if she can build a friend for herself.

Mmm, okay. I‘m not entirely sure how to describe this. It‘s post internet and the age of information, everyone shuns computers because they believe they caused this huge plague. A young girl with a mechanical heart is the daughter of two important inventors, she decides to create an android. Anyone else read this? Maybe you can help me with the description 😔

I almost stopped reading. So much about this book sucked, maybe the last third was actually ok?
Little to no world building
Irrational characters
I don't know if the author has any knowledge of programming and electrical engineering at all. I know sci-fi may take leaps and a little bit of freedom, but what she tries to do simply does not work.

As an ending it's definitely different. Took me a while to translate/figure it out but it's perfect.

🌟🌟🌟🌟/5
Took me a little while to get into this modern reworking of Frankenstein but once I did I very much enjoyed it. The characters are complicated and intriguing and I loved how the dynamic between them shifted. There's also some wonderful world building with a very believable post apocalyptic setting that's quite dark and sinister. The story is however the main draw and like the original is a little uncomfortable but does make you think.

This is an extremely clever take on Frankenstein. This is a story about making a person from machines - a robot, in a time when computers are banished and have destroyed lives. It upholds the promethean theme of Frankenstein and the message in so many ways. I didn‘t expect to love this much as I did, but it was unique and really entertaining. #booked2018 #steampunk

Cinfhen Hmmm, this might work for me!!! I‘m having the hardest time with #steampunk 7y
Victoriahoperose @Cinfhen did you by any chance read Cinder? If so, I think you will like this a lot. 7y

Anyone read or have thoughts on this? I picked up this sampler at Victoria Schawb's event. The author of this book is a Dublin local and moderated the discussion at the event. The premise sounds interesting.

Wooooooo! Good morning, Littens. Last hour of the #readathon. Who is still reading? 🤘🏻📚👏- @Liberty

Suelizbeth I had to sleep, so no 24 hours for me, but I've enjoyed the time I spent awake and reading books and other Littens' posts. Readathons are wonderful. I finished one book and made progress in a few more books. I'm still going to read today for the #springcleaningreadathon. 8y
Lizpixie I'm still reading now, even though I had to take a few hours to rest my headachey noggin, I've enjoyed what I did read. Managed 3 books so I'm happy. Can't wait for the next one!😴 8y
Theresa I've been excited for this readathon since the last one ended & I was on a mission! I did better than last time at just under 17 hours. I'm going to be hurting today!!! 😂 8y

I love reading in the outside darkness while sitting on a dimly lit bench. Especially if that bench faces a wooded area. Oh, the safety feelings.

Clementine wasn't willing to wait for me to finish the book, but oh my gosh! This is so good! I'm in love with it, the only thing I would've changed is to have made it longer. Everything happens so fast! I wish it could've been spread out so I could've enjoyed it all the more. It's got the makings of a great YA novel, post apocalyptic setting, steampunk influence, and lots and lots of secrets. Check it out!

This book is absolutely fascinating so far. It's a post apocalyptic world that's delightfully steampunk. It gets extra points from me for quoting Carousel of Progress too. 😊

Pugandbooks Ooh I might have to check this out. 8y
LovelyLadyKaty @Pugandbooks I'm pretty sure it's a Frankenstein retelling. I can't tell yet but it's soooooooooo delightful. 8y

Sometimes you finish a book and days later you're still trying to figure out what it did to you. The first half of this I was trying to figure out where it was going to go. For a while it looked like it was going to try to be a teenage Frankenstein love triangle, and then boy did it take a TURN. This is not a satisfying book, but you'll be thinking about it for a while.
