Honey Girl (Original)
Honey Girl (Original) | Morgan Rogers
"HONEY GIRL is an emotional, heartfelt, charming debut, and I loved every moment of it."-- Jasmine Guillory, New York Times bestselling author of The Proposal With her newly completed PhD in astronomy in hand, twenty-eight-year-old Grace Porter goes on a girls' trip to Vegas to celebrate. She's a straight A, work-through-the-summer certified high achiever. She is not the kind of person who goes to Vegas and gets drunkenly married to a woman whose name she doesn't know...until she does exactly that. This one moment of departure from her stern ex-military father's plans for her life has Grace wondering why she doesn't feel more fulfilled from completing her degree. Staggering under the weight of her parent's expectations, a struggling job market and feelings of burnout, Grace flees her home in Portland for a summer in New York with the wife she barely knows. In New York, she's able to ignore all the constant questions about her future plans and falls hard for her creative and beautiful wife, Yuki Yamamoto. But when reality comes crashing in, Grace must face what she's been running from all along--the fears that make us human, the family scars that need to heal and the longing for connection, especially when navigating the messiness of adulthood.

This was a gorgeous novel about finding your purpose and following your passions despite external pressures. Grace has always had a life plan, but when the struggle to succeed in her field because of racial and sexist ideals becomes too much, she drunkenly gets married in Vegas and decides to spend the summer with her new wife. A beautiful expression of found family, identity, and dealing with anxiety

A poignant, character-driven novel. I enjoyed the way it explored finding your place as an adult (coming-of-age for the late 20s) and that it didn‘t shy away from mental health issues.

I‘m decidedly 😭😭😭 over HONEY GIRL, in that way where I want to talk about how EVERY LITTLE PART OF IT hit me but also in that way where I never want to talk about it because WHERE DO I EVEN START.

It‘s about figuring stuff out. Family, when your parents give you what they need instead of what you need. Work, when systemic racism dogs your every step. Friendship, when your friends are just, like, EVERYTHING. Love, on all levels.

5 stars 😭😭😭

I finished Honey Girl about a week ago, and it has become my favorite book. This book was recommended to me as a romance but it is so much more than that. Reading a coming of age book in which the main character has to figure out what to do once the plan is over, and having to separate what she truly wants from what she‘s supposed to want, was something I didn‘t know I needed.

Such a good solid book about a woman trying to find herself after drunkenly marrying a woman she didn't know while celebrating her college graduation. Not too heavy on the romance - an easy, lovely read.

I liked the protagonist, Grace Porter, and her story of discovery, healing, and romance.

But I loved the cast of almost unbearably charming characters that made up her chosen family.

I love Grace and her weird, lonely, ugly, glimmering, love you so much it hurts, found family. Grace and her expectations, familiar and choking. Grace and her wife, hunting monsters. Grace and forgiveness. Grace, favored by the sun and in love with the stars. Grace learning that The Best and happiness are not antonyms. Grace and her loneliness, never alone though. Lonely monsters, finding each other, holding on tight.

I‘m constantly reminded when I venture outside my comfort zone that romance just isn‘t the genre for me. This was a super cute story but I just wasn‘t invested as it‘s kinda slow in parts. For anyone that loves romance especially LGBTQ+, this is definitely a book I‘d recommend. There‘s a lot of great representation here. I just don‘t get why I can‘t get into romance? I try so hard lol

✅ A romance novel by a BIPOC author
1st & last time author.
2 ⭐️⭐️
I wanted to LOVE it so much. After ch 7 it went downhill.
I enjoyed Yuki's radio show.
It's a contemporary novel. MC finding herself as an adult/mental health/living to father's expectations. Romance only 1 quarter of book.
I didn't feel their relationship at all. WHO calls their gf by their full name ALL the time? No one! You call them babe, bella, their nickname, baby?

JudeCC I never connected with Grace: whiny & immature/age 28-29. I liked Yuki better. At least she was more centered and wiser.
SO MANY references to space, universe, stars and the sun.
(edited) 3y
JudeCC Quotes I liked:

📌 When you have a plan you don‘t fuck it up, you keep going.

📌 Are you there? I‘m listening. I‘m here.
(from Yuki's show)

📌 Lonely creatures

📌 Believing in monsters is not what the show is about. — What makes me any different from this terrible thing? What makes me the same? — Lonely creatures, what makes us so different from the stories we tell in the dark?

I really enjoyed this book, especially because I felt Grace's struggles. I don't face barriers from racism between me and my chosen career, but I am very familiar with reorienting my life after accademia and with feeling lost after school ended. It was also fun seeing how Grace handled accidentally marrying a woman she didn't know in Vegas. Content warnings for racism and panic attacks. #LGBTQ #WarmBooks #College

I was enchanted by Honey Girl when I first started reading it. I love an interracial relationship in books and in movies (it seems abuse is more tolerated sometimes than simply a couple that doesn‘t match 🙄). I loved the LGBTQA+ representation because I feel like there aren‘t many mainstream representations of such relationships either. However, by the end of the novel, the dramatic writing style wore on me a bit. A like not a love.

Grace has just achieved her PhD in astronomy but is flailing, which manifests in her drunkenly marrying a stranger in Vegas. This book is billed as a romance, and while there‘s that element, it‘s really about those moments in life when we are lost and just don‘t know what to do next. I found this extremely relatable. I just loved it!

I honestly don‘t know if I read this book or if this book read me. If someone asked me for an example of how writers can write novels poetically, I would point to this. Every sentence literally *sings*. If the gorgeous writing wasn‘t enough, the romance was sweet, the characters dynamic. & then there‘s the way the author lovingly handled themes of millennial burnout & depression. I cried. A stellar book, through & through. ★★★★★.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas unless you wake up from a dream that you met a girl, partied all night, got married & realize it wasn‘t a dream. Will this one night of drunken fun change everything for Grace Porter or will her life fall back into her old routines? I see why my coworkers love this book & while I didn‘t like it quite as much as they do, it was still an entertaining read & a soft pick for me.

Loved this dedication. I have been savoring this book in between other books, because I love it. This relatable story about the stories we tell ourselves to keep going. Its also an oops I got married story, a found family story, and a trying to merge the circles of friends, and family, and plans, together into a livable life story.

I liked Grace‘s story - earning her PhD shortly before her 29th birthday and in desperate need for a gap year to discover who she is independent of her status as a student and a daughter who as black, gay, female suffered micro aggressions and questions her well-planned decisions. ...The repetitive use of Grace‘s full name and her father‘s moniker drove seemed unnecessary. Actually, everything about her dad drove me nuts- but great friends!

Excellent in it's own right just not what I had expected. The blurb mentions drunk nuptials in Las Vegas post doctoral graduation but that is such a small part of the larger storyline. It's an adult coming-of-age, inner peace, finding a place and embracing expectations that are both Grace's own and what others place on her- all told in prose.

Part my fault I know I am not keen on romance, but also this doesn't feel like a romance, it is more of a 1/4 life crisis and how a woman finds herself.
What I ❤️ it is a multiracial queer centric life story.
What was fine - the writing.
What 😔 plot holes and lack of research. I know it is weird but I fixated on her getting a PhD in ⭐ in PDX. There are no programs for that here, here where it is cloudy 300 days a year. Also the ☕in Boston? Why?

Librariana I just noticed a poor editing choice on a children's Non-fiction book and it bummed me out! On a timeline, of all things! I think, as readers, we do notice these things and when it takes us out of our reverie, it's unfortunate. 4y
