Down the Rabbit Hole
Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny | Holly Madison
67 posts | 107 read | 39 to read
The shocking, never-before-told story of the bizarre world inside the legendary Playboy Mansionand, finally, the secret truth about the man who holds the keyfrom one of the few people who truly knows: Hefs former #1 girlfriend and star of The Girls Next DoorA spontaneous decision at age twenty-one transformed small-town Oregon girl Holly Sue Cullen into Holly Madison, Hugh Hefners #1 girlfriend. But like Alices journey into Wonderland, after Holly plunged down the rabbit hole, what seemed like a fairytale life inside the Playboy Mansionincluding A-list celebrity parties and her own #1-rated television show for four yearsquickly devolved into an oppressive routine of strict rules, manipulation, and battles with ambitious, backstabbing bunnies. Life inside the notorious Mansion wasnt a dream at alland quickly became her nightmare. After losing her identity, her sense of self-worth, and her hope for the future, Holly found herself sitting alone in a bathtub contemplating suicide. But instead of ending her life, Holly chose to take charge of it.In this shockingly candid and surprisingly moving memoir, this thoughtful and introspective woman opens up about life inside the Mansion, the drugs, the sex, the abuse, the infamous parties, and her real behind-the-scenes life with Bridget, Kendra, and, of course, Mr. Playboy himself. With great courage, Holly shares the details of her subsequent troubled relationship, landing her own successful television series, and the hard work of healing, including her turn on Dancing with the Stars. A cautionary tale and a celebration of personal empowerment, Down the Rabbit Hole reminds us of the importance of fighting for our dreamsand finding the life we deserve.

Well… I‘ve literally gone down the rabbit hole 🐇 I recently listened to Crystal Hefner‘s memoir and I‘ve been watching the documentary, Secrets of Playboy. Wow, the things that went on in that house have blown my mind 🤯😳 the celebrities, the drugs, the deaths, the women who worked for Hefner were atrocious and covered up so many horrible things. Like I said… mind blown 😵‍💫

This will be my 4th audiobook! Yay me! 🎉 I‘m trying Everand!

mrp27 I‘m not a big audio book person either but the few books I‘ve enjoyed on audio tend to be memoirs and non fiction titles and of course narrator/narration is always key. 6mo
perfectsinner Nice! I just read this one recently after being on hold for it for 6 months. It was interesting. I used to watch the TV show and always wondered about Holly & Hugh's dynamic as a couple... and wondered what went wrong, and how she felt about Crystal marrying Hef after Holly had seemingly waited so long. 6mo
MemoirsForMe Your 4th audiobook! Woo hoo! 👏🏻 6mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @perfectsinner have you watched the documentary? Secrets of Playboy. It was really interesting especially after reading these books. 6mo

This was an awesome read for me!
I am now also down the rabbit hole because I now listen to her podcast, Girls Next Level and have been watching GND.
I was a little too young to watch GND when it aired live... but also, Kendra is only 5 years older than me, so 🤷‍♀️

Super enjoyable read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Megabooks This is one of my favorite juicy memoirs! 2y
Megabooks Also there‘s a free, streaming GND channel on Amazon. I admit I‘ve indulged in a rewatch! 2y

Loved this book! The beginning was slow but picked up quickly. I watched GND growing up and recently listened to the Girls Next Level podcast with Holly and Bridget.

This book is a great look into what Holly went through before, during, and after mansion life.

22 - This is a re-read, I bought it in 2015 and absolutely devoured it! After coming out of my own tumultuous, emotionally abusive relationship I could empathize in a way with how Holly was feeling while she was with Hef and living on the mansion. The book ends on a hopeful note, that we are resilient and can come through things stronger and wiser!

I hadn't planned to read this at all... I was never really interested in Girls Next Door or Holly's World. But a friend brought it to my attention and something intrigued me. It's definitely interesting hearing Holly's take on her own actions through her interesting life choices. #12-2022

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I expected this to be pure brain candy, and it often is, but damn, it‘s juicier than a 2000s Playmate in a velour track suit! True to “reality” tv, things are not always how they appear. The girlfriend politics were particularly fascinating. What a bizarre life choice! Holly does not sugarcoat, but of course, this is all through her eyes. Take it as you will. An entertaining memoir for those who vegged on Girls Next Door like I did.

Megabooks 💯 agree with this review! The girlfriend politics were absolutely fascinating. And Hef‘s manipulation, too. 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks He was a piece of …. work. 3y

The Playboy zeitgeist was in full swing when Holly was Hef‘s girlfriend and starred on The Girls Next Door. I loved hearing about the drama at the Mansion before the cameras showed up. She reflects on how manipulated she was, and the bad business and personal decisions she made. MUCH tea is spilled!

She talks about her post-Playboy life: DWTS, Peep Show, filming Holly‘s World, and the birth of her daughter, but it is mostly about life with Hef.

britt_brooke Thanks for reminding me I need this in my life! 3y
tjwill She was always my favorite! 3y

Megabooks @tjwill I was more of a Bridget girl, but I really enjoyed hearing about all of it from Holly. I was not a fan on Kendra!! 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks I read one on Kendra‘s books. 😂 She got on my nerves, but she was so young. What a weird situation. I liked Bridget the most, too. 3y
Megabooks @britt_brooke she was young! It was interesting that Holly says Kendra affected that laugh for TV. That‘s one of the things that annoyed me most about her. 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Oh, interesting! 😂 3y
Cinfhen I sort of missed out on all the drama around Hef and his threesome / I never watched the show but I can imagine this would be fun to listen too😄 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen fun would definitely be the description!! I think I was just the right age to enjoy the show. Holly is about my age. We were both around 25 when the show was on in the mid 00s. 3y

I spun my Wheel of Rereads with just the nonfiction ones and got this. I have a migraine tonight, and Holly‘s voice is actually working for me! Kinda surprised by that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It‘s kind of the perfect celebrity memoir for me…so much tea is spilled. Either have a super interesting life, be really funny, or spill the tea…but really tea is my fav!

Cinfhen Ugh 😩 that‘s a lot to deal with at bedtime. The Delta variant is really out of common here, even though 75% of the country is fully vaccinated. Unfortunately, Pfizer wasn‘t successful in stopping this new strain but still out serious cases while rising are not uncontrollable, yet. Right now only those over 60 are getting the third dose, although im not sure if that will really help. E is still here for one more week😊He has TONS of friends here 3y
Cinfhen So he‘s busy every weekend with them. It‘s nice that we have him all week and then we get a little break too😜 3y
Cinfhen Last weekend z went down south with E and his friends, which was sweet. Z loves hanging with the older guys. They all treat him like a little brother 💙 3y
Megabooks @wanderinglynn thank you, Lynn!! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen wow. We‘re getting more cases too, and now Biden wants to PAY people to get a free vaccine. What kind of world are we living in!! So glad E has a lot of friends and that he‘s including Z! I‘m guessing they‘re old enough that the age difference is becoming less of a big deal, which is great. Glad y‘all are getting a break, too!! I want to go away for a weekend before delta gets too out of control here, but I doubt I‘ll end up doing it. 3y
britt_brooke I could‘ve sworn I‘d read this, but I haven‘t. I used to watch hell out of Girls Next Door. 😂 Definitely stacking. 🐰 3y

Shocking or not so shocking from the book .....
$25,000 ??? For the master bedroom?? He paid rent for the bedrooms???

I didn‘t know much about the playboy mansion or Hugh Hefner before this and honestly I don‘t even care what his side of the story may be. This is Holly‘s story about her time there and some time after and I am glad to have read this with a few glasses of wine in the sunshine.

The Girls Next Door recently came to Amazon Prime and gave me major mid-00s nostalgia, so it was perfect when Holly‘s memoir showed up in the latest audible sale. This is just pure fun gossipy fluff but interesting nevertheless. She definitely spills the tea on her time in the mansion, which wasn‘t as fun as TV made it look. Hef was absolutely as manipulative and sleazy as one would expect. #audiobook

A little light reading tonight after finishing “The Saturday Night Ghost Club” (a fantastic read, btw). I don‘t know why, but I‘ve always found the whole Playboy thing fascinating. ...And equal parts horrifying. Like a pink, fuzzy train-wreck...

Overall this was enjoyable and actually quite interesting at times! Like I said before, I‘d always had a soft spot for Holly, and it was eye opening to see what her life and experience was really like. I appreciate how clear-eyed she is about everything, including her own mistakes and naïveté. I did think she spent too much time on how awful some others were and def seemed to exaggerate some of her recollections. But still a fun light read. 3/5 ⭐️

#FlashbackFriday ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Five stars for a book by a former Playboy bunny? Why, yes!
I give books five stars if I love them enough to reread them. While I‘ve never actually read it, I‘ve listened to the book multiple times on Audible. Holly also narrates, so that‘s a plus!

This is isn‘t a book of literary greatness, but she keeps you engaged and I love the Alice in Wonderland quotes throughout.

FantasyChick I read this a while ago and absolutely loved it! The Vegas Diaries is on my list too! 6y
keys_on_fire @FantasyChick The Vegas Diaries is good too! I liked this one a little bit better, but that was probably because I hadn‘t watched either show before reading the books, but I knew enough about Hef to get what was going on. 😆 6y
Jaayimee I‘ve heard it‘s great. Definitely adding it to my list 6y

I have never had interest in the “watch some random people live their lives” type of reality TV ... but I watched every episode of The Girls Next Door when it first ran, not because of Hefner who was a pig and an asshole, but because I had a soft spot for Holly. She seemed so kind and sweet and was obviously smart and sharp. I read an interview with her before this came out and it made me want to hear her actual reality vs. the façade #nowreading

keys_on_fire I ❤️ this book. I have listened to it multiple times on audible, and she narrates. Her second book is good too, but I prefer this one. Hope you enjoy!! 6y

The playboy mansion 🐰 and Hugh Hefner are certainly symbols of #americanmoney. I read this for a book club a couple of years ago and while it had some entertaining insights into living in the mansion and the life of a playboy bunny, the writing was atrocious. #aprella #pinkcover #aprilbookishmadness

Reviewsbylola Completely agree. This was difficult to read and Holly‘s bad attitude really shined through. My opinion of her once I finished this was extremely low. 7y

#SeptemBowie #day16 #Fame These days, the most famous (or infamous!) are reality tv stars, like Holly Madison. Hugh Hefners No1 girlfriend for years, she posed for Playboy, made a reality show with two other "girlfriends" and generally became a complete famewhore, only later eclipsed by the likes of Kim Kardashian & family. That she finally grew up and got herself out of that soul sucking lifestyle does her credit, but it took her awhile to wake up.

#Characters2017 #day27 #Scrooge Turns out Hugh Hefner is a bit of a Scrooge.According to Holly Madison's memoir about her time at the playboy mansion as Hefners No1 girlfriend,he's a complete tightarse with his money, each girl has an allowance according to her place in the house, the house itself is falling into disrepair because he won't spend money on it & that aura of wealth & debauchery is all fake. They were not happy when she published this.

Former girlfriend of Hollywood's most notorious bachelor, Hugh Hefner. Holly Madison describes how life at the playboy mansion went from a fairy tale of A-list celebrity parties to an oppressive regime of strict rules, bitchy backstabbing amongst the bunnies, and loss of identity.

This book is what it is. It's not a memoir where you necessarily come away with any life lessons- other than don't date possessive men- but it was a really fun, enjoyable read. I always liked Holly on the Girls Next Door, and I really enjoyed reading about her post mansion life. I'd recommend it if you're a fan of any of her TV shows.
