Mehso-so

PROS:
The writing:
This balance of ST's in-character, often authentically appalling expressions, with truly beautiful/worshipful descriptions of his ward and the nature around them, as well as the unique voice provided to other animal POVs featured briefly. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? The commentary:
Climate change/environmental concerns, humanity as a destructive force
Living true to your own nature, being accepting of when your nature may not map onto those of your community, your predecessors.
Parents should let go of controlling how children turn out, your dreams are not their dreams, family means accepting differences
Living in fear not allowing to thrive, to change, improve circumstances
1y
Robotswithpersonality 3/? CONS:
Maybe I'm remembering wrong from the first book but it seems the author took a (deceased) bit character and made up a backstory not hinted at before, feels like a retcon for added drama, horrible experience just to demand emotional response, more manipulative than genuine built relationship between S.T. and Dee.
1y
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 Pacing issue, a point at which repeats of 'run from danger, towards danger, hide from danger' and hearing over and over again about the gross variations of zombie mutants, becomes a little tiring.

⚠️ depression, animal cruelty, animal death, gore, SA(?)

A solid follow up to the first book, which follows a unique main character-Shitturd or ST for short. This continues his journey through an apocalyptic world and his goal to save humanity. It does not quite have the depth and focus of book one, and occasionally wanders due to too many side characters. However, it was still a fun quick read. 4⭐️

This book was just as much fun as the prequel, and I was glad to see ST learn an important lesson along the way.

After three tries, I finally finished this. It was probably not a necessary sequel, but worth a borrow.

Frantically reading the ebook of this because it was due back very soon. I got to an extremely exciting part and then… Libby automatically returned the book right out from under me ☹️ Now I get to wait another six weeks to finish the book 😅
@TheAromaofBooks this was on my bingo card for this month, so I‘m crossing it off 🤣

swishandflick Next time put your e-reader on airplane mode to buy yourself a bit more time 😆 3y
Johanna414 So frustrating!!! 3y
rabbitprincess @swishandflick @Johanna414 I totally thought I had until tomorrow to finish it off, because earlier yesterday Libby said I had 2 days left with it. I guess when I looked at it, it literally meant 48 hours or less 😂 3y

TheAromaofBooks Oh no!!! That's the worst! But I definitely think it deserves to be checked off due to circumstances beyond your control! 😂 3y
rabbitprincess @TheAromaofBooks If I‘d had another hour with it, I would have finished it 😂 3y
rabbitprincess @swishandflick @Johanna414 @TheAromaofBooks Hurray, the book just came back this evening, well ahead of schedule! So I finished it immediately 🤣 3y

🎶Welcome to the jungle!🎶

1. Butterflies! Or octopuses (octopi? octopodes?).
2. The sound of a cat purring can cause human brains to release endorphins.
3. It may take me a bit to get to this one, as I‘ve discovered I‘m not really in a place to read pandemic stories yet. 💙

#SundayFunday Have a great day, and don‘t forget to tag me! 🐙

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, Hollow Kingdom. So I was really worried this one would let me down because second books are rarely as good.😒 But this must just be my jam🎶, because I loved this one too.😃😁 I went in not knowing much about the plot. And other than reading the first book, I would recommend others doing so too. It was such a nice surprise. I really hope she makes this a trilogy at least. I want more!!🐾

Our favorite foul mouthed crow is back! Shit Turd bemoans the hardships of raising the last Mo-Fo (human) on earth.

I agree with other reviews I‘ve read. This isn‘t quite as fresh and funny as Hollow Kingdom. But it was still an amusing read. I was happy to hear another chapter from Ghengis the cat‘s point of view.

Jee_HookedOnBookz I love Genghis! And yes the first was still better :) 3y

Foul (fowl?) mouthed crow Shit Turd is back with another adventure, navigating through the world of grotesque human hybrids and trying to keep those he loves safe. I loved the writing and the characters but didn‘t like this plot as much as the first book, though I warmed to it as I read.

I just loved Hollow Kingdom, so I‘m really excited to be getting into this one. And what an auspicious beginning—a crowlogue! I love it. 😂 I was also glad that the crowlogue did a quick summation/reminder of events in book 1 so I can get right back into the story.

Soubhiville Yay! I have the audio, it‘s probably on my TBR for next week. Hope you love it! 3y
wanderinglynn Great first line 😆 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “All this shit happened, more or less.” - ST, our fearless crowtagonist. ⬆️ Absolutely loved the nod to my favorite first line (Slaughterhouse-Five). Anyway, quite possibly the most unique narrator to ever exist is back in a post-apocalyptic crusade to save the last mofo. Super creative with many legit laugh-out-loud moments and memorable creatures. Brilliant audio production!

Cinfhen Im intrigued… but I need to know MORE!! Is this part of a series?? Is it speculative fiction? Would I like it?? Because I‘d like to laugh out loud ♥️ 3y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen It‘s the follow up to Hollow Kingdom, so start there! I liked the first book more, but they‘re both funny and weird and just entertaining AF. The narrator is a domesticated crow. 😂 The first book is zombie apocalypse and this one takes place a few years after that. (edited) 3y
Cinfhen Hmmm, this might be a little OUTSIDE my reading comfort zone so I‘m gonna go the #BorrowNotBuy route xx thanks, friend 3y

A worthy follow up to Hollow Kingdom. Clever, hysterically funny, and bursting with Buxton's gorgeous and amusing descriptions about animals and the natural world. ST, the irrepressible talking crow from novel one, catches us up after the almost complete destruction of the human race. He has become (along with some owls and an eagle) the main protector of the last human on earth. Robert Petkoff does the audiobook narration and it is MAGNIFICENT.

britt_brooke The audio is SO good! 3y

My problem with sequels, especially when the first book is a near perfect literary adventure, is that my expectations can be too high - I want to relive the experience of the first book, & that's often not possible. But this book? Hit. The. Mark. It made me laugh, it made me cry, & while not quite as good as the first, it was close. Trilogy please

Linsy This makes me so excited! I started Hollow Kingdom last year, but there was a lot going on and I put it down. But the first few chapter were SO FUNNY! Seeing that the sequel is also amazing makes we want to get back to it ASAP! 3y
BookDragonNotWorm This one isn't quite as funny, but any time spent with S.T. is a good time! 😉 3y
AudiobookingWithLeah Good to hear...I'm going to listen to Book #1, soon...so this makes me a little more excited for it. 3y

I was so looking forward to this one and I‘m not loving it ☹️ still some funny moments but not quite as good as the original and a little Lovecraftian.

Tera66 I pre-ordered it, but am too nervous to start it. I loved the first one so much! I'm gonna be so bummed if this one stinks! 3y
Hooked_on_books Oh no, that‘s too bad! I loved the first book and didn‘t even know about this one until it‘s pub date, so I‘m hoping my ignorance tamps down my expectations. 3y
rachelm @Tera66 and @Hooked_on_books I‘d still say dive in. It‘s a darker book in a lot of ways. Lots of humor still in the wordplay, but it‘s not hitting me the same as the first. I‘ve heard some people loved it more! I‘m excited to hear what you think. No spoiler, but you do learn more about Big Jim‘s history which I liked 3y

(Can I give it more than 5 stars?) The humor that Kira introduced in Hollow Kingdom & developed further in Feral Creatures, is so strangely specific in such a satisfying way. Also, an extremely important detail in the book is that the animals all stay true to their nature. Hollow Kingdom & Feral Creatures are two of the only books that toy with my heart like a bird with a french fry, yet I keep coming back for more. Certainly an all-time favorite!
