I wish I had more time to curl up with this lovely book. 🧡
I bought this when it was published a few years ago, started it, got distracted, finally read it the last few weeks. Took it with me to Harrow‘s book signing for Starling House & got this signed, too.
Love the story, characters, & especially the sisters. Could have been shorter, I think. Perfect for this time of year. #doublespin for September

Such a great historical witchy book, with a mysterious villain who lurks within shadows

I needed this. I needed the reminder of the long lines of women doing our best to not live in the boxes prescribed to us and the underlying ways they have passed on knowledge. I love it so much!
26 degrees today but still wanted ice cream and time reading at the park so here I am.
I only got to finish one book for #AuldLangSpine this year (The Heartbreak Bakery) BUT I‘m halfway through this one from @Clare-Dragonfly list & I love it. I originally chose it bc it was the #LGBTbookclub January read & it satisfied #TarorTBR prompt. Three birds with one stone, as the saying goes.
@monalyisha thank you for once again doing this event! As Clare posted earlier, we are bookish soulmates! Thanks for connecting us. 📖🫶🏻☺️
What did you think of the witchcraft in this story? Was it similar or different to your personal idea of witching?
#LGBTbookclub
Each of the Eastwood sister's had a very distinct personality/vibe; which did you most relate to? Were there any other standout characters for you?
#LGBTbookclub
Hey folks, welcome to this month's discussion.
First prompt: this book was very much a feminist text, but how did you find the themes of disabled/poc/queer identities? Could the writer have included more on these points?
#LGBTbookclub
This is our January pick for the #LGBTbookclub! Discussions will be held on Jan 29th.

To the person who didn't like any of the choices this month, I'm sorry! I've seen your list and will put some of those on the poll next month.

This eas everything I wanted in a retelling of magic and its roots. I loved this book. You must read it for yourself. 🥰
I read most of this book in October, and I finished it back on Nov. 1st.
I loved the alt-history Victorian-era witches/suffragist main plot line and the three sister characters, each of whom has a unique personality and motivations to root for (Agnes was my favorite). I did find the Salem, Mass. connections to be kind of superfluous and the fairy tale retelling elements felt overused and repetitive by the end (this was a 500+ page book). 4⭐️
Harrow is definitely on my favorite author list now. Magic, women‘s rights, suffragettes, free will, race, and class…loved how the sisters‘ stories overlapped and how seamlessly gay and trans characters were woven into the tale. Each character was full and complete and three dimensional and essential to the plot. No fillers or cardboard cutouts. The magic system was fully realized as well. Really enjoyed this one.
Loved this novel! I loved the multiple storylines tangled together and wanted to be one of the Sisters on Avalon! 🧙🏻♀️📚🧹

I didn't have many O books, I think this might have been my only one ... it's a great read though!
@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
Loved. The book is set in an alternate world that has a very similar history to our own. It‘s the 1890s when women are fighting for the vote but magic is real and outlawed and all the fairy tales are just a little different. I loved how witching was used as a metaphor for will and agency, how it was tied to the suffragist movement, and magic wasn‘t quite what the women thought it to be. A richly imagined world and beautiful story.
After a slow and uncertain beginning, all my wishes came true. From the beginning of part 2, I never stopped having goosebumps. Amazing characters, great plot, lot's of happenings and twist, detailed historical facts. The message about women and their power moved me immensly. I want to meet these women, and learn their ways. I want, no, I need to be a witch.
This book wrecked me. What began as a fun and whimsical story - full of diverting fairy tales and nursery rhymes and reimagined history - became something FIERCE and all-consuming. Harrow has done it again! This story of three sisters and their legion of Sisters fed my soul and made me believe that anything is possible when women put their minds and hearts and powers together. AHHHH the writing was devastatingly flawless. Now I need my own copy!!
This was a slow-paced story and took me a bit to get into it but so worth it overall. I loved how witchery was portrayed as rhymes and fairy tales come to life with power. The magic was definitely my favorite part but I also enjoyed getting to know the sisters and watching their relationship grow along with their mission.
@TheAromaofBooks this was my September #doublespin finally finished despite expiring library holds!
Not even 50 pgs in and this is already so captivating. I love this quote- it‘s getting me all fired up.
Book 122🎧
This is not my typical genre but I love witches so of course this was on my list!
It is a longer listen and I felt that in some spots it got a bit slow but overall it is a beautifully told story.🖤
Heartbreaking and empowering, 3 sisters give meaning to ‘Maiden, Mother, Crone” as they bring forth a new age of witching🖤👏🏻
I did it! Finished this book today, which means I got a blackout #BookSpinBingo
This book was really good. And was the perfect book to read on Halloween. Loved all 3 sisters and their stories. I just overall loved this one.

Happy #basicwitchswap! @Annie1215 I am thrilled about these books. I have wanted the three books for a long time! I am also super excited for the Moon Magic 📖. The gifts from Salem are special and creative. So cool. Thank you @sprainedbrain and @mklong for hosting! P.S. I love the vegan jerky! 🤤
Orbit Live just hosted an EPIC conversation with authors Harrow and Lucy Holland (Sistersong) and WOW it got me so amped! They also gave recommendations for several other books I‘d never heard of. They talked about writing where “the boundaries of myth and history are totally blurred,” prioritizing inclusive feminism, and their research and writing in general. Loved hearing about how their drafts differed so much from final books. Check it out!!
Little shopping therapy for me yesterday. Has anybody seen the reading socks at Barnes & Noble‘s yet… These are so squishy and are lined with faux Sherpa on the inside. I know it‘s ridiculous, but I‘m going back for more. #readingsocks #cozy
Finally getting around to posting my October #Bookspin. Lots of spooky reads on their for #Scarathlon2021. I‘ve already finished one audiobook in October, which I still need to posta review for.
#TeamHendrix
I‘ve seen a lot of love for this one around here. These are the Barnes & Noble monthly picks for October, BOGO 50% off (though the MGs don‘t get the BOGO in store for some lame reason, so Ghost Squad is full price in store). Happy October!
This was my Illumicrate read in July, this is her second book. It has witches and suffragettes. Three sisters who were separated are brought together in New Salem in 1893. There are not supposed to be witches anymore but they are around quietly going on with business. Then another force comes out and the witches need to form a coven to help battle this power. I enjoyed it a lot. The female characters are all really good.
There was a lot I liked about this book; the retelling of fairy tales, suffragettes, and witches but for some reason the story fell a little flat for me. It was borderline YA and adult and I hoped for more layers, more oomf, I think? I spent the morning finishing up the last 125 pages before the meeting but alas non of the other book club readers finished before the meeting so maybe it was just not our story.
Getting some outdoor reading and snuggles in before the triple digit heat index kicks in! It‘s my late day at work today 😉
You were right @AllisonM89, I just finished my #BookSpin for June and it was such a great and beautiful read! Rather than I, better let some quotes talk:
“Books and tales are as close as she can come to a place where magic is still real, where women and their words have power.”
“Maybe magic is just the space between what you have and what you need.”
“A witch is just a woman who wants too much”⬇
Thanks @TheAromaOfBooks!
This was one of the most unique books I‘ve ever read. This is an alternate history/fantasy novel about witches getting involved in the suffragist movement in nineteenth century United States. This is a fiercely feminist novel featuring a diverse cast of characters including a lesbian couple and a transgender woman. The Eastwood sisters are the central characters: Bella, Agnes, and Juniper. Intricate, intelligent, well written. Read this one!
“I am terrified and I am terrible. I am fearful and I am something to be feared.”
“Every woman draws a circle around herself. Sometimes she has to be the only thing inside it.”
I‘m loving this book. I plan to spend most of the day today reading it.
I started this today, and I like it so far. I love this blurb.
My April group book for the reading challenge I‘m taking part in this year. Felt a bit slow at the start but I loved how the fairy tales were changed and woven into the story and I loved how different yet same the sisters were at the end of it all.
Currently reading this. It‘s a story about witches, sisterhood, magic and their fight for equality! The Eastwood sisters Juniper, Agnes and Bella join the suffragist of New Salem. They turn the woman‘s movement into a witches movement. Hunted by dark forces they draw new alliances, draw old magic and together they create an power that is ferocious to say the least. Powerful and breathtaking book!
This book was a delight to read from start to finish. Fairytales twined with history, and the struggle of women to gain equal footing in a world that burns them at every turn. It has been a while since I read a story that bridged the gap between fantasy and reality so realistically I could taste it.
“The thing is though-and I don‘t want to upset you-The Last Three are dead...Real dead. Exceptionally dead. There are legends and stories about how dead they are. You might‘ve heard some of them.” Oh Juniper, always so theatrical. Lol
“The Constitution? What, exactly, do you think the constitution is? A magic spell? A dragon, perhaps, that will swoop down to defend you in your most desperate hour? I assure you it has only ever been a piece of paper, and it has only ever applied to a very few persons.”
I got a bingo and finished my #doublespin. Those are pretty much the only good things I can say about this book. I would DNF'd it long ago, buti actually bought the book so I was determined to get my money's worth. The pace didn't pick up until about pg 270 and didn't get really good until the last 75 pages or so. I know lots of people love this, but for me it was just flat. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks
