"Vibrant." Emily A. Duncan, New York Times bestselling author of Wicked Saints "An enchanting and thrilling contemporary fantasy." Brigid Kemmerer, New York Times bestselling author of A Curse So Dark and Lonely A safe haven between four realms. The girl sworn to protect it--at any cost. New York Times bestselling author Sara Holland crafts a breathtaking new contemporary fantasy perfect for fans of Melissa Albert and Holly Black. Hidden deep in the mountains of Colorado lies the Inn at Havenfall, a sanctuary that connects ancient worlds--each with their own magic--together. For generations, the inn has protected all who seek refuge within its walls, and any who disrupt the peace can never return. For Maddie Morrow, summers at the inn are more than a chance to experience this magic first-hand. Havenfall is an escape from reality, where her mother sits on death row accused of murdering Maddie's brother. It's where Maddie fell in love with handsome Fiorden soldier Brekken. And it's where one day she hopes to inherit the role of Innkeeper from her beloved uncle. But this summer, the impossible happens--a dead body is found, shattering everything the inn stands for. With Brekken missing, her uncle gravely injured, and a dangerous creature on the loose, Maddie suddenly finds herself responsible for the safety of everyone in Havenfall. She'll do anything to uncover the truth, even if it means working together with an alluring new staffer Taya, who seems to know more than she's letting on. As dark secrets are revealed about the inn itself, one thing becomes clear to Maddie--no one can be trusted, and no one is safe . . . Sara Holland takes the lush fantasy that captured readers in Everless and Evermore and weaves it into the real world to create a wholly captivating new series where power and peril lurk behind every door.

I liked some elements of this story but I'm not sure whether I'll finish with the series. I'm not that interested in these characters and felt that most of this was just a couple of people struggling to figure out things that were pretty obvious early on.

I‘m back from Myrtle Beach and I swore I would read more but on family vacation everyone wants to chit chat and hang out so I barely finished Havenfall and actually only due to reading on the plane.

Wow, so great! I was scared that it wouldn‘t be good, due to the reviews on Litsy, but this was probably one of the best books I‘ve read in a while. I hung on every word, and the twists were amazing. Havenfall is where all the worlds come together during the summer. Maddie is the niece of the Innkeeper. But when a portal thought to be sealed permanently opens, murderous creatures are set free, chaos spreads about the inn. 5🌟

It‘s definitely an interesting story, but I feel that it‘s purpose was more for world building than to make the reader get to know and connect with the characters. Most of what we know about the characters is superficial. Sadly Maddie had too many moments where I thought, “why Maddie, why?!?”. I was frustrated with her most of the time, but I just needed to know what was going on, so I read on. I hope book 2 is better.

I've had this book on my shelf for awhile now & for whatever reason I picked it up today & now I'm halfway through it. 🤷‍♂️

I'll finish it tomorrow so I can carry on with what I was supposed to be reading. I guess I just needed an intermission.

The YA protag is fairly generic & the plot is rather slow moving but I'm fascinated by the story overall & it's scratching whatever itch I had.

kinda weird that I'm suddenly reading it but here we are.

The first in a YA series, about a magical inn that serves as a safe portal between realms. Maddie loves to spend her summers at the inn, which her uncle runs, and hopes she can take over the job herself one day. But then someone turns up murdered and Maddie isn‘t sure she‘s up for the job after all.

Clare-Dragonfly This sounds really interesting! 4y

I liked the idea of this book a lot but ended up with a lot of world building questions.

I LOVED this! I am so surprised by the low ratings. Holland created an exciting world that she can build into and I found the mystery very engaging. A hidden hotel that hides doorways to other worlds? How could this be bad? I can't wait to see how the author explores her worlds. The only negative was I wish the MC Maddie had a stronger voice, she was the weakest character.

The author does a great job of world-building & setting up this beginning so that the reader starts knowing as much about the history of the worlds & the Inn, and the related political & social issues, as Maddie does. Of course, as the book continues, Maddie learns more & her (& our) perspective & understanding become muddled. Despite that, I had a lot of fun learning about these worlds & following Maddie as she investigates the Inn's secrets.

Rating: ⭐️
DNF. I love the cover and think the writer can write. However, it took over 80 pages for something to happen and it was just so slow and boring. There wasn‘t any character building and not much world building.

I hate bailing on a book, but this one was just not holding my interest, and I was not excited to pick it up and keep reading. I have a huge TBR pile, so not much sense in me wasting time by slogging through this.

Look at that cover 😍

Started this book on my break at work today. Only 20 pages in but it has my interest. About to settle in bed for the night and read more.

Also, don't forget, if you need a new bookish game, my friends and I will be starting a new one in July in our Rapid Readers Book Club on Facebook. Hope to have you join us in playing 😊

I read two Illumicrate books in May, this was one of them.
Set in Haven, the inn is a neutral place for the three realms which surround Havefall. Maddie spent her childhood there and wants to run the inn once her Uncle Markus retires. But then there is a murder and many other things go wrong. Maddie learns all sorts of secrets about her uncle and her best friend Brekken.
I did enjoy this book, quite a short book but packs alot in it.

I finished this last night and it was quite good. There were some repetitive bits and some things seemed a bit disjointed but it was fun and I really liked the characters, they were quite well fleshed out. Will definitely pick up the sequel.

8/10 💫

A great YA fantasy read. The narrative reads easily & the fascinating premise is well executed. The plot moves well & there were good moments of intrigue. I enjoyed the cast of characters & felt the central focus to be well-developed. Admittedly, the “twists“ in the plot were mostly easy to foresee, but I still enjoyed the journey from beginning to end. The ending was satisfying, but definitely leaves room for additional series plots.

This could have been a really good murder mystery, but setting the entire story at an inn which is a gateway to magical worlds, and then never letting us see those worlds, just makes me feel cheated.

InBooksILive Ohh I wanted to read this but now I'm iffy! I hate when books talk of other worlds but we never see them 😔 5y

Havenfall is an inn, hidden in the mountains of our mortal world, where it acts as a gateway and protector to magical realms. Maddie finds herself as acting innkeeper when a door that was closed long ago suddenly cracks open and monsters roam the tunnels and grounds of the inn, threatening the hard won peace of Havenfall.

MidnightBookGirl Monsters aren't the only thing on the loose, as secrets and hidden agendas slowly permeate the one place Maddie always thought was the safest in the world. I'm ready to pack my bags and go in search of mysterious fog covered mountain towns until I find Havenfall, where I'll have tea with the Heiress and I'll be sure to stay clear of the tunnels, no matter how tempting. A wonderfully diverse and exciting start to a new series! 5y
