Had a delightful surprise parcel arrive all the way from 🇨🇦- thanks @LeahBergen ! I definitely had an Anne phase but never really thought to explore her other works.

I opened this parcel at my grandparents and the moose poo bookmark really tickled my Nana - she‘s probably still giggling (she‘s so cute). Love that the label on the back reassures that the bookmark is odourless 🤣

❤️🤍❤️

LeahBergen You‘re so welcome! And I‘m glad that your Nana liked it, too! 😆😆 9mo

The second L. M. Montgomery book that made it to the best 24 books I read this year.

This contains everything I love about L. M. Montgomery. It‘s like a warm blanket and a warm hug, so cozy. Jane, and her mother and father.

What are some of your favorite quotes or scenes from Jane of Lantern Hill?

Where does this one rank for you in the LMM canon?

Several of you have mentioned this as an old favorite (or a new favorite)—what makes it a favorite for you?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

sblbooks Jane was my favorite LM Montgomery novel ,next to the Anne of Green Gables series. I enjoyed Jane's time with her father on Lantern Hill the best. The quote from question 3 was the best.👇 3y
Blaire I‘m not doing this read along but for a certain period of time this was the only book my family had on tape and we listened to it on multiple road trips and I adored it. Seeing the title brings back many good memories 3y
BarbaraJean @sblbooks This whole buddy read is making me reevaluate my rankings of LLM's books! The Blue Castle has always been my favorite, and that hasn't changed... but my second-place spot for the Emily books has been complicated by this re-read. Jane is just slightly below Anne (well, the first book anyway), but not much... and I don't know where to put Emily anymore!! @Blaire I love that your family listened to this on road trips--what lovely memories! 3y
See All 10 Comments
Daisey I don‘t remember reading this one before, and I don‘t think any will ever replace Anne as my favorite. However, Jane has joined this group of wonderful characters, and I‘m not really sure I could rank them. 3y
Jerdencon I missed this one too - but going to try to read it and plan to join for the next book and get back on track. 3y
quietjenn Jane ranks right at the top for me, along with the Blue Castle. And they are both books that I didn't read until I was an adult, which I find interesting. Anne and Emily will always be beloved, but part of my love comes from my childhood association with reading those. I'll be very curious next month, as I've never read Marigold at all! 3y
mom2bugnbee Until this buddy read, I had only ever read Anne & Emily, though I've been obsessed with them for decades. Stay tuned to see if anyone replaces them. ☺ I liked Jane very much, but Emily is still one & Anne still two at the moment. 3y
TheAromaofBooks It's hard to replace Anne when we get to see so much more of Anne's life/growth. I would have absolutely loved a sequel to Jane with her heading off to college or some such. I don't love this one as much as The Blue Castle (always my fave) and part of it is because it makes me sad to see how much time Jane's parents wasted with miscommunication and allowing other people to keep them apart. But I do love this one SO much! 3y
BarbaraJean @Daisey I feel like I can rank LMM‘s books but not her characters! They‘re a lovely group of my book-friends. 😊 @Jerdencon It will be great to have you jump back in! @mom2bugnbee I look forward to your thoughts on the books and characters yet to come! (edited) 3y
BarbaraJean @quietjenn It was my first time reading Jane & will be my first time reading Marigold, too! It‘s interesting how many of these read differently to me now than when I read them as a child or even as a young adult. Blue Castle has held up, but my feelings about certain of the Anne & Emily books have shifted during this buddy read. @TheAromaofBooks Oh, I would have loved a sequel to Jane! Or a companion novel following her parents‘ story. 3y

Like Jane with the Bible, many people are turned off to certain books (or more to the point, religion) because of a bad experience in how they were introduced to it.

Whether it‘s a certain book or something larger like religion—have you had an experience that turned you off to something, that you later re-evaluated and found you connected with after all?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

sblbooks This is a great quote. Poor Jane was so traumatized by her grandmother, berating her every time she made a mistake. It's no wonder she felt that way. I'm thankful I never had that situation. I love that her dad introduced her to Bible reading in a whole new way. 3y
BarbaraJean @sblbooks I loved the whole passage following this quote where he talks about all the “corking stories“ and “'human' human nature“ that are in the Bible! And then the whole series of gorgeous quotes that really highlights the beautiful literature that's in the Bible. It was such a lovely moment, and for me, demonstrated how often people get turned off to faith/God because of some awful misrepresentation like Jane had from her grandmother. 3y
quietjenn This passage was so lovely. I've definitely had experiences similar to this, where my appreciation of something - or inability to appreciate something - was colored by my associations with it. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I love this quote and how it illustrates her dad reintroducing her to the Bible and also other subjects - Jane becomes much more interested in geography, history, science, astronomy, etc. because her dad shows her that learning can be engaging and exciting. It's so horrible when adults use religion and/or education as a punishment and I loved seeing the tables turned on Grandmother! 3y

What do you think of Jane as a protagonist?
She‘s not as prone to scrapes as Anne, her independence comes much more gradually than Valancy, and she‘s far more practical than Emily. What attracts you to Jane?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Bkwrm7 I like Jane's helping nature and enjoyment of gaining competence as she learns how to do things although occasionally she felt maybe just a little too perfect and capable. 3y
julieclair I love her positive attitude, and her true desire to learn the skills necessary to make a house into a welcoming home. 3y
sblbooks I love Jane, she is less dramatic than other protagonist. She starts out very timid, due to her upbringing. I love how grows throughout the novel. 3y
See All 8 Comments
BarbaraJean @sblbooks I did so love her growth throughout the book! I loved seeing her learn to stand up for herself, finding her own inner strength. @Bkwrm7 She does seem a little too capable, too often! I would have actually loved to see a few mishaps in the kitchen--more than the one or two tiny pitfalls we are shown. 3y
Daisey I agree with @sblbooks that Jane seems less dramatic than other Montgomery protagonists and I think this helps me better connect to her in some ways. I also appreciated that she did have so much growth in this story. 3y
quietjenn I really love Jane. As much as I adore other LMM heroines, I do sometimes think that they can be a little bit too twee, and that was never the case with Jane. I like that she's so practical and straight-forward and in many ways she feels more real and average than others, in a good way. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I really love Jane and her practical outlook on life - I think part of the reason she's less inclined to “scrapes“ is because she isn't nearly as imaginative as Anne or Emily. I do feel like she's written older than she is - she seems more mature than any 11-year-olds I know! 3y
BarbaraJean @quietjenn @TheAromaofBooks I loved Jane‘s practical nature as well. I love Anne‘s daydreams and Emily‘s intensity, but there‘s something refreshing and comfortable about Jane‘s practicality. 3y

This book has several of LMM‘s common themes: the overbearing family who doesn‘t understand, the orphaned or isolated child who finds a new home, a quarrel/misunderstanding between lovers, childhood antics, joy in the natural world.
Are you drawn to these themes in fiction?
In reading Jane, did you see LMM developing these themes further or differently than in other LMM books we‘ve read? Or did you find them repetitive?

#KindredSpiritsBuddyRead

Bkwrm7 I'm definitely drawn to some of these themes which is part of why I come back to Montgomery over and over again. Childhood antics, joy in the natural world and found family are some that I generally enjoy. Quarreling lovers I could take or leave though. 3y
julieclair Like @Bkwrm7 , I really enjoy the childhood antics and joy in the natural world. I find these themes to be so uplifting. They are a good contrast to the more challenging themes in many of the books I read. 3y
sblbooks I too, enjoy the childhood Antics and joy of the natural world in Montgomery's novels. Orphan is a buzzword for me.😊 3y
See All 12 Comments
BarbaraJean @Bkwrm7 @julieclair @sblbooks I love the childhood antics in LMM's books & in fiction in general. What's interesting is I'm not particularly drawn to nature writing, but I LOVE the way LMM describes natural beauty as well as how it's such a deep love for her characters. In this novel, I noticed how the rural setting is such a contrast between the controlling grandmother in the city, and the freedom of Lantern Hill (and how Jane thrives there!). (edited) 3y
Daisey I love the joy and humor that always seems to find its way into Montgomery‘s books, as well as the way she describes the natural world. 3y
quietjenn I definitely enjoy those common themes of Montgomery's, in both her writing and in other books. Except maybe the nature writing, which I think I appreciate rather than always enjoy. And so much yes to the humor and joy that @Daisey notes. 3y
TheAromaofBooks One of the things I really love about Montgomery's writing is the way her younger protagonists are still very independent and determined to DO SOMETHING - even when Jane is downtrodden she still has flashes of rebellion. I also love your point @BarbaraJean about the restriction of the city vs the freedom of the countryside and how the descriptions match that theme - I hadn't noticed that before, but it's quite true. 3y
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Yes, absolutely—the agency and determination LMM gives her characters is very satisfying. With Emily, Valancy, and Jane especially, they‘re trapped by others‘ rules and expectations but they all break free both internally and externally. I do think the city vs. countryside theme is a common one for LMM—so many of her characters (Emily, Anne) HAVE to seek out natural beauty as a comfort when they‘re in more urban settings. 3y
JenlovesJT47 I‘m a little late to the party but I finally finished it today. I love the common themes because every time I open up a LMM book, I know what I‘m getting: her books are so comforting and it‘s like wrapping myself up in a blanket by the fire with some tea and a great book. So perfect for when you need a break from the harsh realities of the real world, it‘s very soothing. 2y
BarbaraJean @JenlovesJT47 I‘m so glad you popped back into the discussion after finishing the book! LMM definitely has her favorite themes and you can almost always rely on that cozy vibe. I‘ve been loving the one LMM book per month pace for this buddy read—I always have a little respite from the world waiting for me on my bedside table. 😊 2y
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I just re-read your comment in this thread about how LMM‘s protagonists are so independent and determined to DO something… and it struck me as hilarious having just read your review of Pat…🤣 2y
TheAromaofBooks Right?! Pat is the most do-nothing character ever! I kept imagining her as Anne's neighbor - I feel like Anne, with her absolute disaster of a childhood, would probably have had a few things to say to Pat about change! 😂 2y

Another winner from L. M. Montgomery. Jane is living with her mom, grandmother and aunt. Her grandmother rules everybody and expects to be obeyed at all times. One day a letter from Jane‘s dad arrives inviting her to spend the summer at P. E. Island with him. Jane accepts and everything changes for her and everyone around her.
This all the Montgomery ingredients for a great novel.

This is another L.M. Montgomery book I don‘t remember ever reading before, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it today. Yes, it was a bit predictable and the quick resolution at the end was a bit unsatisfactory, but it also included the humor, variety of characters, and descriptions of nature that I love about Montgomery‘s writing.

Oh, Jane was a delight! So many classic L.M. Montgomery themes: the overbearing relatives who don‘t understand the delightful child in their care, the romantic quarrel/misunderstanding, quirky and lovable supporting characters in a rural setting, and lovely descriptions of PEI‘s natural beauty. And of course the ending was not surprising, but I loved it all the same! Looking forward to the #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead discussion next Saturday!

I drew a random title from the windowsill pile to break up my Lunar Chronicles reading and was quite happy with this month's #KindredSpiritsBuddyRead was picked. This is a childhood favorite that I hadn't read in decades and I was glad to have the nudge to pick it up for a reread!!

Jane actually holds up pretty well over time. This and The Blue Castle are two of my favorite Montgomery's, and they have some similar themes of a dreary home life ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) at the beginning of the book and the eventual escape to a more independent and fulfilling life. Jane gains confidence as she learns to embrace what she loves. She does seem a bit young to do all the things she does, but her sturdy can-do attitude, strong sense of justice, and delightful sense of humor once again won me over. There are so many fun side characters sketched in just a few perfect sentences as well. As an adult, I wish that ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the ending was a little less abrupt, but you can't have everything!

LeahBergen @Chrissyreadit I lucked out on a big stash of vintage LM Montgomerys at a charity book sale last year. This was one of the bunch. I‘m surprised I didn‘t knock anyone down in my mad lunge to scoop them all up. 😂😂 (edited) 5y

My childhood copy of this book disappeared so I was forced to order this lovely Virago edition. When it arrived it screamed for a reread and I was so pleased that I loved it every bit as much as I did as a child. When the father Jane doesn‘t remember sends a letter to the bleak home she shares with her mother and grandmother demanding she spend the summer with him she doesn‘t want to go. However when she does she finds a new world of happiness.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It‘s beautiful 💗💗 5y

I was away for the week on a much-needed, off-grid vacation, and while I was there, I read Jane of Lantern Hill for the first time. Where has this delightful book been all my life?! Seeing Jane find both herself and, eventually, her family, was so rewarding. L.M. Montgomery, I continue to bow down! #vacationread #lmmontgomery

First time reading this sweet book. ❤️ I really liked the narrator for this specific edition but I was so disappointed in the editing of it. Too many repeated lines that should have been cut in editing.

(Another great song! Love the Cowboy Junkies and Margo Timmins' voice!)

Cinfhen You and @karenuk seem to like the same music 🎶 I‘m not familiar with a lot of these songs 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y

I‘ve been nursing a pressure headache all day, so it was a half day of work for me. After an afternoon nap (always seems to help with headaches), I‘m settled in with a cup of darjeeling tea with fresh lemon slices, and another delightful novel by one of my all time favourite authors, L. M. Montgomery. Anne will always be my kindred spirit, but Montgomery‘s lesser known heroines, such as Jane and Marigold have a special place in my heart as well.

HotCocoaReads Oh, I loved this one! 6y
catebutler @HotCocoaReads I remember you reading this one, Jeana! I know you spoke highly of it. I‘m only a few chapters in, but it‘s such a delicious read. I love how Montgomery speaks to your soul. 6y

catebutler @Graywacke They are definitely miserable! I‘m sorry to hear you dealt with one earlier this week. Mine has receded, so it‘s bearable, I‘m hoping it‘s fully gone by tomorrow. Fingers crossed. 🤞🏼 6y

Oh my—I loved this story so much! How sweet that it revolves around the relationship between a girl and her dad. And the ending 😢 Could this be better than Anne of GG?
