I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf
I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf | Grant Snider
A look at the culture and fanaticism of book lovers, from beloved New York Times illustrator Grant Snider Its no secret, but we are judged by our bookshelves. We learn to read at an early age, and as we grow older we shed our beloved books for new ones. But some of us surround ourselves with books. We collect them, decorate with them, are inspired by them, and treat our books as sacred objects. In this lighthearted collection of one- and two-page comics, writer-artist Grant Snider explores bookishness in all its forms, and the love of writing and reading, building on the beloved literary comics featured on his website, Incidental Comics. With a striking package including a die-cut cover, I Will Judge You By Your Bookshelf is the perfect gift for bookworms of all ages.

Fun book to read, perfect palate cleanser.

Every reader will find an illustration that will speak to her/him.

You're probably familiar with some of the content shown in this book from social media.

I think bookshelves can say a lot about their owners. How do you organize your books?
My French books are together. Then my English books are divided into fiction and non-fiction.

I was on Litsy in its early days but deleted my account years ago. I just need a place to talk books! I have no followers yet so I‘ll be shouting into the wind for a while, but that‘s ok.

The pic: Occupational hazard of being a public librarian—book gluttony. And there‘s a stack at home yet. The power corrupts.

Chelsea.Poole Hi! I‘m also a public librarian and have too many books checked out! The way I started interacting more on Litsy was by following a bunch of accounts (by following all the people who have “liked” a popular post) lots follow back immediately! 9mo
RobinTheDustCatcher @Chelsea.Poole thanks, I‘ll do that! I noticed a lot of people I used to interact with haven‘t posted in a couple years :( maybe they‘ll come back, too! 9mo

Hey book friends, long time no post ❤️. I have been in a serious reading slump for most of the year. The struggles of my job and buying my house just left me drained. The past couple days I joined some reading challenged on StoryGraph, signed up for a Halloween exchange here, and reorganized my bookshelves. I missed y‘all 📚❤️

kaykay521 @KaylasReadingNook hi name buddy!! I have three kitties and so far they only seem to occasionally walk/ lounge across the top of the shelves. They know not to knock mommy‘s books 📚 down 🤣🤣 1y

A low pick for some sweet and super relatable cartoons about reading. However, I‘m not a writer so the second half all about writing and authorship/poems were not what I signed up for. A pleasant way to start my mornings several days in a row while trying to wake up. Probably would be less forgiving if I‘d paid for this, -but I don‘t pay for any books I read (libraries rock!)- because it‘s not very meaty.

Lives up to the hype. Took me longer to read this one because I spent a lot of time looking at all the details in the illustrations.

Short story inspiration: This year we customized our 2nd graders' backpacks. They picked out the patches, I stenciled on their first initial. Then yesterday, 4 days into the school year, someone took my DD's bag from in front of her classroom. Later that night, a custodian found it on the playground, and returned it this morning. What kind of adventure did it have, wandering around campus on its own? Her brother thinks aliens took it.

SleepyDragon And I firmly believe this would never have happened if we had just bought licensed bookbags instead of spending a whole weekend deciding on and ironing on patches. 2y

This is an interesting collection of comics about book lovers & their bookishness; also about writing. Many are amusing & entertaining, some I can relate to. The ones about the Pig Latin, Stages of a Reader & Murakami Bingo are gems. Fun read, but I reckon you‘ll enjoy it better if you read a few pieces a day & not binge read it in one sitting..I think they‘re great on their own but lacks ‘the flow‘ when read as a collection.

I enjoyed the first half, which were great comic pages about reading and readers. The second half was about writing and writers, which I could not really relate to and wasn‘t expecting. Cute art that had almost a Dr Seuss vibe (with less nonsense and more adult) with the rhymes and puns and cleverness.

I much preferred Debbie Tung's Book Love over this one. I think the burden of reading this one aloud to my kids ruined the pacing as they questioned some of the vocabulary (way more advanced than our normal bedtime reading). But they had several ah-ha moments seeing some of their own bookish quirks within the panels.

Meh. I was fine that it was just as much (or more?) about writing than reading but it felt smug at times, and while he sort of challenged “canon” he also upheld the old white man ideal in a lot of ways. I connected to some, enjoyed others, and was disappointed often.

My #ChristmasBookHaul that I had to 100% but for myself but I don‘t care. The hubs did give me an Amazon gift card though. My parents lost their minds and bought everybody nerf guns. I think quarantine is getting to them. 🤣🤣🤣 The Lost Queen is for #NewYearWhoDis with @monalyisha and @BayouGirl85

tracey38 Aww, your parents. That's too funny. 🤣 Love the book planner. 4y
CocoReads @tracey38 the planner is from Little Inklings designs. I‘m not sure where I found out about it-probably on Facebook but maybe here. I ordered it way back in September/October and it came mid November so it‘s been hard to wait but I think it‘s exactly what I‘ve been looking for. I‘m not great at creating my own so I‘m giving this a whirl! 4y
monalyisha Hahaha! Great job, parents! 😅 4y

CocoReads @monalyisha I do think it‘s kind of fun. My hubs was grouchy about it and I see his point (it violates everything he was taught about gun safety) but I learned the same rules about guns but also grew up with nerf guns and so we weren‘t idiots about it. Plus they also bought targets to use instead of us hitting each other with them. The 2 year old got kind of rowdy but everyone else mostly just shot targets with them. 4y
CocoReads They say we need to hold on to them for future (and hopefully outdoors) events. 🤣🤣🤣 4y

I liked some of the comics alot but essentially what it came down to was perhaps the lack of cohesion. This collection (like other reviewers have noted) would perhaps be better suited as a different format - that way the author could have tackled both topics separately - reading / writing.
I enjoyed the comics relating to reading better.

Some of these were fun and cute, some felt pretentious. I think this better off as a web comic rather than a book. It got rather monotonous repetitive halfway in.

A fun collected volume of mostly one-shot webcomics. The art and frequent rhyme scheme are delightful. I feel like the title isn't quite right for this collection. It misses the comics about writing and literature and focuses on bookshelves. I felt like writers, English teachers, (some graphic designers) and readers would all get something out of this book. #comic #webcomic #booksaboutbooks

My bookshelf may be a chaotic mess of funko pops & various fandom merch but it is 100% me. I don't necessarily "judge" because everyone is entitled to their own opinions and should be able to read what they love. I won't lie though, everytime I go visit someone I find myself perusing their shelves because it is always nice to talk about what we've read.
