A wonderful read that helped me declutter my home and make better decisions on choosing things that spark joy everytime. 💕

A friend of mine asked me how many irons I have in the fire currently. My answer: “[Working at the] Capitol, buying a house, taking a Harvard class, daydreaming about building my business, applying for a new job, teaching yoga, and wondering what my current contract workload will be after session. So — not many?” 😂🔥🧯
This is most of my books, ready for the KonMari method of tidying up (and packing) this weekend.

wanderinglynn I‘m exhausted just reading all the things you do. 🤯😆 4y
Librariana I always thought/found the book-purging component of the KonMari method difficult to tackle, but I can definitely see how it serves a larger purpose to ask ourselves the question of whether or not something brings us joy. It's important to be honest with ourselves... to ask "Truly, will I read or re-read this?" and then letting things go accordingly. 4y

So. Overall this is a good book. But I don't know if the way I consumed it (via audio) was really the right choice. Also I think maybe re-reading it then incorporating some of the process each time will be more helpful. However some of the things she says I can't really get “behind“.

This was my #DoubleSpin Book :)

So. of course I saw the Netflix show (which I felt was much better to consume than this book) as well as well its on everything! I love the idea of having only things you absolutely love in your possession. I want to do better at that and gently let go of things that do not “spark joy“. I am sure it will be a process.

jb72 I read the book first. While I found a few good points, I didn‘t like the book. I felt like there is this shame with keeping items. I watched the show and found it more gentle than the book. Maybe it was translation? Idk. But the part about keeping books in closet or getting rid of them seemed condescending. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 Yes! I mean why would you put everything in your closet. I know that minimalism is a good thing but... I mean I like bookshelves. If they are done nicely they are very comforting. But I felt like it was very judge-y as well. 4y
jb72 @ElizaMarie Minimalism can be good, but only if you want to be. Hoarding obviously goes overboard, but I see nothing wrong with wanting to have stuff if you can afford it and have it organized in a way that is pleasing to you. 4y
ElizaMarie @jb72 I mean I agree. I don't want to hoard. But I do think pairing down things that might help me appreciate what I have. But yeah if you have space for it and like/love it then there is no problem with having things! 4y
jb72 @ElizaMarie So true. Paring down to what you love helps you gain an appreciation. I think too often we take advantage of the fact of having and wanting stuff. It‘s at our fingertips practically. Over the past few years I‘ve learned to let go of books I don‘t love. 4y

So I listened to this one the other day. I enjoyed it somewhat but... I feel like it is not “for me“. I feel like its important to have things you enjoy in your life however... I don know here whole part bout emptying your purse every day and the whole book thing. I just can't ... But I will try to only keep what I enjoy, use and makes me smile! So we will see how much of the “Marie-Kondo“ method I actually incorporate.

Definitely need a little help today!

I do love her wardrobe organising and really surrounding yourself with items that spark joy . It‘s definitely helped me get rid of those items I‘m just hanging onto for the sake of it! We do tend to hang onto items for the wrong reasons...... Although im clearly not doing it properly as every few months it‘s time to ‘Marie kondo‘ the wardrobe! AGAIN!!

Book 17 of the year, finished Mar 12, audio

Another in my quest to increase my Nonfiction reading. I had 2 books on hold, this was available immediately and I thought, sure why not.

And ya know what? It actually makes a ton of sense. We are currently in the process of moving, so have already gotten rid of a lot of things. But I know I'll follow these methods as I'm unpacking on the other end of this journey to get down to just the stuff I love

Finished this. I‘ve watched her show on Netflix and I don‘t remember her being so judgy/shaming but I‘m guessing Netflix toned her down. She goes on and on in the book about how the best boxes are shoeboxes and such because they‘re free which goes along with the show because she would show up with shoeboxes and things to help the clients meanwhile she started a shop online where is she sells boxes for up to like $200. Just no.

I had only watched a couple episodes of the show and decided to read the book. I think, extreme as she is, that there are quite a few lessons I will give a shot. I do agree that I feel like my life is in order if my house is in order....at least a little. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TheAromaofBooks I definitely think different things subconsciously bother different people, and if you can find a few of those things and stay on top of them, it helps you feel better overall. I know for me it's the dishes, especially because our kitchen is weirdly in the middle of everything. If I make sure they're done before I leave the house and before I go to bed, I feel better about everything in my life! 5y
TamTracy @TheAromaofBooks Yes! I have a problem with lack of closets in my house. Nowhere to put things! 5y

I happened across Marie Kondo's audiobook in my libby app, and thought, why not?! I'm moving soon, it's time to purge. I started with clothes and quickly realized that if I only kept what brought me actual joy... I'd have only a few items and would be washing them CONSTANTLY 😧 I do love her folding methods though!

JacqMac The folding is the only part I stuck with, so it wasn‘t a total loss. 😂 5y

There has been some facebook controversy of late about Marie's take on decluttering book collections and as an avid book hoarder this particular part of the process did hold a lot of interest for me. Marie explains the book decluttering so well and the whys behind it that now even a book hoarder like me can feel confident in only keeping the actual books that spark joy in me. Definitely worth a read. I cannot wait to uses these methods.

I Konmari-ed my house last year after I listened to her on audio last year. But with everyone going cuckoo over the Netflix series I figured now is the time to better explore LibraryThing and get my library cataloged! Love that I can put my movie collection in here as well, AND my son‘s bookshelves without it going into my “To-read” shelf!

I‘ve been seeing comments about KonMari go from good natured ribbing to snarky to mean spirited. Kondo keeps her personal collection to around 30 books, but advises others to keep what “sparks joy.” I had been on a personal social media boycott. Thinking I‘ll go back to it. That sparks joy for me 😊

Emilymdxn I‘ve found this too - she‘s been really misunderstood. I love her methods tho I always intend to own a lot of books, i don‘t think those are incompatible! 6y

The Snow continues to fall! And the mailman STILL managed to come, delivered this and i have no clue what it is! I also am saddened by the backlash against Marie Kondo. It's racist and classist and makes me sad. I read her books, am obsessed with her show and never felt she was "pressuring me" to get rid of books.

debthmpsn I have a feeling she helps a lot of people. I‘ve never watched but I regularly pitch stuff (except books) 😁 6y
Kayla.Adriena @debthmpsn my mom is not a fan of my purging. She likes to go thru it and then takes a lot of it herself. She also gets offended if I get rid of something she got me. Books are a special category for us of course! 6y
CouronneDhiver People are angry about a lot of things these days ... seems a little ridiculous. I don‘t think it‘s ever a bad thing to reconsider our habits. How else does change or growth occur? 6y
Kayla.Adriena @CouronneDhiver Agreed! I hope Marie Kondo has a team of publicists etc that are like "people are jerks, you do you. " Sigh. Always happens when something gets big I guess 6y

For those of you who have shuddered at the idea of getting rid of books I thought you might be intrigued by this article from the guardian https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/jan/10/marie-kondo-you-know-what-w...
I thought it bought up the important side effect of people suddenly going minimalist by getting rid of so much stuff and what happens to it.

TiredLibrarian This one is good too: What we gain from keeping books – and why it doesn‘t need to be ‘joy‘

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/jan/07/what-we-gain-from-keeping-books-an...
6y
Weaponxgirl @TiredLibrarian it really was. I only really get rid of books that I‘ve read and want to pass on to others that are available on kindle for if I really need to read it again at a later date or ones I‘ve finally decided just aren‘t going to be read ever. Everything else is a possibility and I know I‘ll never read all my books but I have every intention of trying! 6y
Chrissyreadit Great articles. I had to give away books during a cross country move when I couldn‘t fit them or afford to ship them. Still have twinges over the books I left behind. I absolutely love and agree with the first article. 6y
See All 40 Comments
DGRachel I‘ve done several purges of books in my lifetime, between moves and consolidating households, and I always end up regretting the loss of at least some of those books. My shelves are full of books I haven‘t read yet, and the potential of those books brings me joy just to look at. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit @DGRachel that‘s exactly why I‘m so cautious about what I get rid of now! I once got rid of a certain book and realised it wasn‘t in the library or on kindle and it took me months to find a replacement! I also love the fact that to my closest friends I‘m an unofficial library. With similar situation for a friend, book not in the library, expensive to buy finally realises to message me. Boom book in her hands 6y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit glad you liked the article! This is the sort of thing that‘s felt even more important to me recently. I‘m glad and lucky to live where I do in the world but also feel a responsibility to look after the world better at, 6y
GingerAntics This is disgusting. I‘m sorry, but I wear shoes until they have holes in them because I can‘t afford new. I wear clothes until they have holes in them, then wear a pair of shorts under because we can‘t afford new and our Walmart has gotten rid of anything above a size 14. This sounds like a rich person problem and a first world problem. I agree that throwing this stuff out is not the solution and the people need to start thinking before they act. 6y
GingerAntics I wonder how many of these people end up doing this massive purge all over again in a year or two because they just kept buying stuff. I‘d wager most of them do, which is even more disgusting. I can‘t even with shows like this and people like this. Not when I‘m looking around trying to make everything I own go just a little longer, because replacing it is unlikely, so it‘s make it work or go without. Sorry to be the Debbie downer. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I‘m exactly the same as you, all my clothes bar underwear and socks are from charity shops generally due to at first being poor and then finding out I love recycling and keeping stuff outta landfill. I didn‘t know about clothes going to poorer countries, screwing up their economies and then leading to them having to work in those awful fast fashion factories to then fulfil the west‘s need for more stuff 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I had a promotion last year which means I can finally save up for clothes that I need from more sustainable and ethical sources and I am trying to avoid fast fashion brands as much as possible. (I didn‘t buy a lot in the first place and wore the stuff till they die but I don‘t want to support at all anymore) 6y
Chrissyreadit Yes- we live in an interesting time of capitalism driving quantity over quality. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics please don‘t worry about being a downer, I have been in your position for most of my life. It‘s only this year I managed to get a job that I both love and agree with ethically and that pays me a wage where I can even think about having to replace stuff that was needed without worrying about what I‘m gonna have to be without this month. The attitude has enraged me for ages 6y
GingerAntics I‘m hoping for a raise sometime this semester. My boss is trying to push it through. I‘d love a full time job. I‘m with you. You make what you have work. Unfortunately, here, the charity clothes shops aren‘t near the poor communities, they‘re in the more affluent communities, so without a car they‘re hard to get to. It‘s amazing how much people really don‘t care. This woman‘s show sounds like it just highlights that fact. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit yea, and I always find those news reports basically saying we are ruining the economy if we aren‘t being good shoppers so annoying. 6y
Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics I am the same way. My kids clothes almost always came from second hand shops. My own clothes are worn until they cannot be worn anymore. But I‘ve also been a crazy environmentalist since the 80‘s. This culture has been very hard on my heart. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics and it‘s surprising what you can make work when you need to too. That really sucks about the charity shops, they have been my lifeline for a long time. All my work tops come from one that has a 2 for Q9 deal on all the time. I do unfortunately need clothes that I‘m not worried about if they get ruined as you know kids can be messy 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl oh wow, it‘s so nice to know I‘m not the only one. It‘s so easy to feel like it. We have a Walmart right next door, and it‘s what we could afford, but now they‘ve switched to “super skinny Barbie” sizes, so when this last pair of pants I have gets worn out, I have no idea what I‘m wearing to work. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit I used to work in a charity cafe that was about the environment so I love that ❤️ even though it is heartbreaking and you feel like you‘ve been talking about the same stuff for years. I‘d love to share tips and stuff as I always feel like I‘m boring my immediate circle with whatever thing I‘ve just found (nobody in the pub wants to talk about biodegradable loofahs to use instead of plastic sponges for some reason ) 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics trousers are the worst! And I think there‘s more of us than we think it‘s just who wants to talk about the people who aren‘t “supporting” the economy with lots of mindless spending and actively thinks it should change in a lot of ways. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Weaponxgirl anytime. As a vegan I find people can often be unreasonable. But in an ideal world I would be more self sufficient. @GingerAntics I work in an underpaid job and so does my husband. I completely understand. The last two years are the first time I‘ve had the ability to do some fun things- and my kids are teens. History will show us to be in the right direction. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit I went vegan last year 😁 the hardest thing for me has been that if I‘m not talking about books I‘m talking about food instead and now I‘m aware that some people might think I‘m trying to convert them. Nope I‘m just very greedy and if I‘ve found something delicious I really want to share it with you all 6y
Chrissyreadit @Weaponxgirl so funny! Vegan is easy as long as I‘m not going to a party. I just don‘t understand why everyone thinks meat or dairy are mandatory. Thank you unhealthy lobbying interest groups. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit yes! I‘m extremely lucky in that my friends are just awesome and really look out for me. I‘m also in a city that has loads of options and is constantly being called a great place to be vegan (edited) 6y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit I run a bookchat group on meetup and I‘ve baked for it from the start and now others have started to join in and they always make sure that it‘s vegan. It‘s been awesome 6y
Chrissyreadit @Weaponxgirl that is awesome! I have never had that support here. At our work we have weekly team-building with potluck. No one recognizes the irony that I can typically only eat what I bring. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit that‘s so mean! I‘ve never got the thought process behind being unable to eat or cook vegan food if your not one. Before I went vegan and ate meat I had veggie friends and I loved cooking for them. If you ever get this way I shall show you both the places to eat out and bake ya a cake. 6y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit here‘s hoping. If these idiots keep destroying the earth, history may cease to exist with the rest of humanity. @Weaponxgirl my thighs always rub together in this one spot, so I end up with a hole there, then the hole rubs my skin raw so I‘m bleeding and sticking to my trousers in that spot. It‘s ugly. Must be what I get for not having a thigh gap. 🙄 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I have the exact same thing 😂 it‘s also made worse by cycling and the trousers rubbing against the seat of my bike. My jeans never rip in a cool way they eventually get to a point where I‘m worried you may be able to see my arse. 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl oh my god, right? The strangest things make it worse. I end up with athletic shorts underneath, since those are cheaper to replace. I can wear men‘s in those so getting something over a size 12 is easier. 🙄 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics leggings under mine, I unfortunately can‘t wear men‘s clothes as I have big thighs and butt and then a tiny waist. It has always been a problem and normally I prefer men‘s clothes because pockets! Men‘s pyjama bottoms have pockets and their jackets have an inside pocket and why do clothes manufacturers think women don‘t need deep pockets. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I meant men‘s trousers, I wear a lot of men‘s clothes as t shirts will actually cover my belly and they don‘t have random bits of sparkle or other bollocks. I don‘t want a sequinned Star Wars crop top thankyou very much. I want one that covers me up and just has a cool picture on the front 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl oh yeah for t-shirts I definitely do men‘s. I don‘t do pink and I don‘t do sequins. I‘m with you on that. My hips make men‘s trousers complicated. I have to wear a belt to keep them on, so in the end they cost more. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I know that pain very well! I‘m very short so for me that‘s been the main issue with buying men‘s trousers I‘m dragging about a yard of fabric around my feet if I try them 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl yeah, there is that, too. At one point I was wearing men‘s jeans. Occasionally I could find a 28 in inseam and not be dragging along, but usually they were 30 or 32 and I‘d have all this extra fabric. Men‘s jeans do seem to be thicker. 6y
Chrissyreadit Yes- ridiculous that men have pockets. I suspect it is to ensure women buy purses but I could be wrong. I wear plus size too- and always have to get men‘s sized t shirts. I typically where leggings under skirts though. I hate How pants feel in general. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics I might give it another try then @Chrissyreadit that has always been my sneaking suspicion too. Jokes on them, whilst I have quite a lot of bags they are all from charity shops and good quality ones at that that I will keep forever (it‘s years of trawling, I don‘t buy them often but I do like a good quality vintage item when I see one) 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl @Chrissyreadit I‘ll agree with the picket thing. If we do have pockets, they‘re tiny. I don‘t have a car, so I walk everywhere, so a backpack makes more sense than a purse. I don‘t even own a purse. They‘ve never really been my thing. I‘ve had people try to get me to carry one on occasion, but it never lasts. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics a back back is my everyday bag of choice most of the time for the same reasons but I have the odd occasion where I like a purse. It must though always stick to the rule of being able to fit a book or kindle inside alongside all the other stuff I need to carry with me. 6y
Chrissyreadit I love backpacks! I‘m a mom so have always needed to carry a lot. Before I became sick a few years ago we hiked and camped all the time. Backpacks are handy and comfortable. 6y
GingerAntics @Weaponxgirl right? A book of some kind is always a requirement. @Chrissyreadit back packs are great for carrying everything comfortably. I think the biggest thing I‘d like to find now is a waterproof back pack since it seems to rain so bloody much these days. I‘m sick of keeping things in garbage bags inside my back pack. 6y

I think Marie would have a serious issue at my house 😂 To have me pick up each book and decide if it brings me joy would backfire on her end.

#KeepALLthebooks #TheyAreMyJoy #YesIAlreadyHaveAnEReader #Paperback4Life

LauraBeth 😂😂 Last night the husband and I were trying to find something to watch together and he paused at this while reading the description and I was saying the following panicky words in my head: “Please no, please no, please no...” I was so relieved when he didn‘t hit play 😂 I am NOT throwing out my books! And she would have given the husband ammunition. 6y
MotionChickness @LauraBeth Lol!! I am in the same boat! I know my boyfriend has gotten whiff of this and I am anticipating “the talk” when I see him later. We‘re planning on moving in together soon and the books have come up several times 😂😅. It‘s just not happening. 6y

Weaponxgirl I think I‘d just throw the heaviest one at whoever‘s head it was that was just trying to make me get rid of them. Probably a cookbook (edited) 6y
MotionChickness @Weaponxgirl Ohhh cookbooks are the best for that... Not speaking from experience or anything 😂😂. And, book throwing would make for good television and get a point across! They bring joy, and protection against negativity. 😂😂 #HalfSeriouslyJoking 6y
Weaponxgirl @Stephuhhnieee lmao! Part of my insane collection of stuff at home to keep me entertained (books, vinyl, board games, colouring books ect) has always been because I have basically always been broke in my life as an adult (carer) and therefore when I‘ve only just had enough to make rent and bills I‘ve been able to stay in for months at a time without it being would destroying as I have stuff to do at home 6y
Weaponxgirl A part of me has always had a problem with minimalists who say if you need it again just buy it again. Not everyone can do that, some of us are broke through no fault of our own damnit! 6y
Pruzy Just make sure touch the books first to activate them or something before deciding whether they spark joy 🤷‍♂️ 6y
MotionChickness @Weaponxgirl I hear you!!! Single mother here! So not only do I rarely have time to go out, I can‘t really afford to do much anyway. Books are my way of going out, and my way of spoiling myself.... And having a physical library of books I have enjoyed is beyond comforting, and cozy, to me. 6y
MotionChickness @Weaponxgirl And to follow that up, thank god for used bookstores and library sales! 6y
Weaponxgirl @Stephuhhnieee oh yea! I get all of my physical books from charity shops and the odd outlet shop. Same with everything I own really! And if someone doesn‘t have books on display how can I possibly get a feel for the sort of person they are? 6y
MotionChickness @Weaponxgirl Yess! If I have a new book it was either gifted or bought with a gift card; otherwise my library is used. And I agree! I look at someone‘s bookshelf to understand who they are.. what they like... what we can connect on or talk about. It gives new meaning to “being an open book.” 6y
MotionChickness @Weaponxgirl And to tie this back to Marie and her “what brings you joy...” I have many books I hated that I won‘t get rid of. They taught me lessons, or they express exactly what I‘m against. And I hope one day my kid(s), or friends or whomever, will pick up the books and learn and grow and shape themselves from the stories. The point being that they are readily available for that opportunity. (edited) 6y
elyseh I couldnt do it!!! 30 books no way!! 6y
MotionChickness @elyseh lol! I haven‘t read the book but I heard that was a misquote 😅 Apparently 30 is her preference... but if you have more than 30 that make you happy then by all means keep them. But as I said in previous comments, I have books that didn‘t and don‘t bring joy, but I keep them for the sake of the moral taught in the book 😬 6y

Help! I'm trying to tidy and this is not tidied! It just looks like more clutter 😫. Marie Kondo says to get rid of unread books and that is just blasphemy! But I can't live with this either because I can't see them! So I'm asking you to #Showmeyourbookspace be it cart, shelves, crates, how do you do it so you don't lose your mind and would make Marie proud?! Tag me ! @Kayla.Adriena

RavenLovelyReads I stopped watching as soon as she said that because then I‘d have to throw her book away. 🤷🏻‍♀️😇 6y

Kayla.Adriena @Susanita show me a picture of this spreadsheet sometime. Also do you keep all the books after you've read them? 6y
CouronneDhiver Haha! I‘ve always been a minimalist... I own around 60 books and they are all contained on one shelf in my sitting room. If I‘m not 100% serious about re-reading a book, I give it away (LFL). 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled We IKEA-hacked our living room with Billy bookcases and cubes and did a whole wall of “built-ins”. Only one minor plumbing disaster as the result of our incompetence. Also, look at book spine towers on Amazon. A little pricey (around $70) but it stores books vertically! I love them! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled And screw That minimalism “get rid of your books” crap. That‘s bogus. 6y
SleepyDragon I don't need Marie's approval, so I just have a couple boxes by my bed and cluttered bookshelves that need organizing. (My toddlers rearranged them and I haven't had the time to fix it.) As for your cart, most pics I've seen have books lined up with spines up so you can read them. Hope that helps a little. 6y
Susanita I keep some after finishing and let others go. They stay on the list until I actually offload them, in case I change my mind! 6y
madamereadsalot1 Mine is an absolute mess! I don't have enough shelves for all the books I own, so I have them overflowing. A lot of my books are still packed in boxes! 6y

It all started with Marie Kondo‘s “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” It inspired me to go down the path of keeping only those belongings that added joy to my life, which opened the door to more awareness of what I allow in. All the books in the photo have inspired me to stay on track.

CoffeeNBooks Welcome to Litsy! 📚 6y

🤔🤔🤔🤔

HannaPolkadots I'd probably be sick with embarrasment after chapter one, so I wouldn't be able to read all the way through whether I wanted to or not 🙈🙈🙈 6y
Whimsical.Curiosity I'd saddle up with some strong booze and read that sucker to the end! 6y
mrslamping Probably not. Life would be dull if you knew what your future held. There‘s enjoyment in the adventure and spontaneity of life! 6y

Rachbb3 No way! 6y
wanderinglynn Maybe ... if it was a choose your own adventure format. 6y
SilversReviews Yes.....I may have missed something in my life‘s story. 😊 6y
Jmrose Then the rest of my life I‘d be saying “spoiler alert” 😂. No not reading to the end. 6y
GripLitGrl Wouldn't read to the end 🙈 6y
TiffanyLynn Depends on who‘s point of view it was written in. 6y
Crowcrumbs I think I might. 6y
InBooksILive 🙈 I couldn't! I wouldn't want to know what the future holds 6y
JacqMac Yes. I hate surprises. 6y
Eelijah “No, I‘d read up to when they gave me the book....... I‘d like to reflect back on a few good memories.......😎 6y
LazyDays Maybe till the last chapter! 6y
huntersmom1977 No. That would give me major anxiety 😄 6y
MaGoose I'd flip through, read the good parts and reminisce. 6y

I've been pretty inactive because I've started reading these two books and throwing out trash bags filled with things I've held on to for little to no reason. I'm actually done reading both and my living space is almost 100% Konmari'd - it's actually kind of fantastic.
