The Vinyl Detective Mysteries - Written in Dead Wax
The Vinyl Detective Mysteries - Written in Dead Wax: A Vinyl Detective Mystery 1 | Andrew Cartmel
33 posts | 31 read | 35 to read
He is a record collector a connoisseur of vinyl, hunting out rare and elusive LPs. His business card describes him as the Vinyl Detective and some people take this more literally than others. Like the beautiful, mysterious woman who wants to pay him a large sum of money to find a priceless lost recording on behalf of an extremely wealthy (and rather sinister) shadowy client. Given that hes just about to run out of cat biscuits, this gets our heros full attention. So begins a painful and dangerous odyssey in search of the rarest jazz record of them all

Really enjoyed this - nice easy read that got me hooked even though I know nothing about jazz! #vinyldetective

Between a pick and a so-so. I don‘t generally read mysteries, but I enjoyed the British humor in this one. Actually, that was the best part... otherwise the female characters are a little stereotypical and the mystery part was average. There are more in the series, not sure if I‘ll read them at some point. But if you like humor and non-grisly murders, give this a go.

I really enjoyed this audiobook, I know it‘s a good one when I choose to listen over swapping to podcasts as they appear in my feed. It was long, I thought we were coming towards a conclusion and then realised there were 4 hours left! But I enjoyed it all except one thing. The author seems to play out a fantasy of quite an ordinary, nerdy, broke bloke who lives with two cats getting seduced by not one but two stunning women... it didn‘t ring true!

RamsFan1963 Did you find it weird that no one ever called the Vinyl Detective by his name, nor did he even say his name at any point? 4y
Magpiegem @RamsFan1963 actually until I read your review mid way through the book I didn‘t notice and then it made my brain explode 😂 it‘s very Withnail and I! Did you find it weird that these women were magnetized to him? Felt very authors fantasy to me!! But other then that I‘m looking forward to the next one! Did you carry on with the series? X (edited) 4y
RamsFan1963 @Magpiegem I do have the next 3 books in the series, but I haven't gotten to them yet. Yes, the women were the least believable part of the story, but it didn't ruin the overall book for me. 4y

I‘ve just started this one on audio and so far really enjoying it. It‘s a different kind of mystery and based in a works I know a little bit about from a previous life. The main character is likable BUT the narrator leaves incredibly long pauses between almost every sentence. It‘s so off putting! I‘m getting used to it now but has anyone else had this in an audio book?

RamsFan1963 I read this and really enjoyed it. I have the next 3 in the series, hopefully I'll get to them in 2021 4y

Oh this is so good. The Detective is looking for a punk record, but actually that‘s just cover for trying to find out who is trying to kill a former punk star who is dating one of their friends. It‘s clever and twisty and lots of fun. Also there is a festival in a (giant) garden. Loved it.

Out today and in my hand. It‘s the new Vinyl Detective and this time the genre is: punk! So excited.

A record collector is hired to find a rare album for a mysterious businessman and falls into an unexpected mystery surrounding an obscure label that only released a handful of jazz records in the 1950's.
I'm excited to continue this series!

I really enjoyed this, no matter how implausible some of the twists and turns were. It was definitely a slow burn mystery, the author took his good slow time unraveling the plot. That usually causes me to bail, but I liked the characters so I hung on. One thing bugged me though, the Vinyl Detective is never named, by himself or anyone else in the book. It was weird. 4 💥💥💥💥 out of 5.

After the Elric saga, it's time for a 180 degree turn to something new, a new series called The Vinyl Detective.

1 The Vinyl Detective series are my current favourite music-related books - I preordered book 3 last week.
2 I struggle with a favourite band - it‘s a toss up between Queen, savage garden, backstreet boys and Muse
3 Rufus Wainwright at the RSC or Alan Cumming at the Palladium
4 Tiergarten by Rufus Wainwright or Last Time For Everything by Lucy Wainwright Roche

I loved this - made it my book of my week on the blog a few weeks ago - and now it's on offer on Kindle in the UK (and who knows, maybe the US too). Well worth a read of you have 99p to spare and like Rivers of London, quirky detectives and off best adventure stories.

rockpools I've been looking for a fun book for a friend who loved Rivers and is going to be in hospital for a bit. Think you've solved it for me - thanks! 7y
Verity @RachelO happy to help - Cartmel is one of the writers of the Rivers... graphic novels too. 7y

Lots of fun and more information about records than you would have thought possible. Though I'm not sure the lead character is actually as irresistible as his author thinks he is!

Fernoppy @quinas I think I got this from your Goodreads list - thanks! 7y
quinas Glad you liked it, I thought it was fun. I completely agree about the protagonist, his irresistible charms did become a bit wearisome. I will read the next one though. 7y

Read: The Vinyl Detective : Written in Dead Wax by Andrew Cartmel and Touch by Claire North.

Currently reading: The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness.

Received: The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes and A Little Knowledge by Emma Newman.

The good news: my #whodunitbymail package is here!

Less good news: when I looked this book up I saw that it was 320 pages on Litsy. Turns out that's an ebook stat. The paperback is 476 pages! 😳

Is anyone in our participating group strongly against a longer read? I'm so sorry! It never occurred to me to check against the Litsy details!

Today's beach reading and it was so good. I tried to ration myself and read it slowly, but like all mysteries there came a point where I couldn't put it down. Cartmel writes the Rivers of London comics and although the topic isn't the same as those, there's a sort of sense of humour in common if you know what I mean. The only disadvantage if being on holiday is that I'll have to wait to get hold of book 2!
