A Walk in the Woods | Bill Bryson

It's not as obvious in the first part of the book, but I think overall I'd consider this a travelogue more than a trail walking book: The dips in and out of trail sections, the areas nearby explored, the number of chapters that focus on history related to the trail but not their walking if it. While over half the book is Bryson and Katz's adventures, it's not exclusively a recounting of the trail experience. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I like that Bryson is openly charmed by the wilderness, that he wants to draw attention to the damage that's been done, the underfunding of the organizations that ensure the preservation of public park ecosystems as well as park and trail facilities, but there's something in the cynical, satirical tone critiquing these resource gaps that put me off. 3mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Complaints in regards to environmental concerns valid, researching trail dangers understandable, but I didn't love that anytime the subject matter moved off actual trail experiences it was often to focus on a negative aspect of the trail's history or present day.
I'm used to Appalachian Trail narratives being bulked out with trivia at this point, but there was something a little sensationalist about digging out the gory details to provide wry
3mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? commentary on.
Likewise Bryson can paint an exquisitely vivid portrait of the humanity encountered on trail, but that also means that when he's displeased he becomes wittily acerbic when I'm not always sure it's warranted.
I appreciate the vulnerability shown in recounting their final struggles on the trail, and the relatable idea of the experience being worthwhile even if it wasn't 'the whole thing.'
3mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 I think if the whole book had been Bryson and Katz keeping each other grounded (and being a haplessly hilarious double act at times) it would have appealed to me more.

⚠️ Fatphobia, animal death, alcoholism

Tagging this book, as Bryson does make a brief visit to my area on his trek. For some reason, Bryson‘s humor got to me in this book, though so many love this book, but I digress…

I do not do much walking outdoors. If given the chance, I‘d walk along the New England coastline. There is something about the salt air and the sea breeze while gazing at the rocky coast that is calming.

However, my parents‘ backyard, pictured in this very old photo ⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️ from a dozen years ago, borders the Appalachian Trail. When I was a kid, we would spend a few hours on the trail by simply cutting through the farm field directly behind us and meet up with the trail. Within a mile of the house is a tiny brook with a little foot bridge that gurgles and is so peaceful. I‘ve not been on the trail in decades, but with it near my parents‘ house, when I visit, I have to watch for hikers crossing roadways. I love ⬇️ 6mo
Librarybelle ⬆️ that the area around my parents is protected, since it is designated federal government property due to the trail. A fun little tidbit! #WednesdayWanderings #LitSolace #MidsummerSolace 6mo

Librarybelle I also normally avoid tagging books in these posts, but despite my misgivings with Bryson‘s humor in this one, it‘s a good look at the pros and cons of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, or really any massive trail. I did like his descriptions of the scenic areas he hiked. 6mo
mabell Very cool! I‘d love to see a portion of the trail one day! (Thru hiker I am not 🤣) I really enjoyed this book, but I agree about Bryson‘s humor - it can be a bit much at times 6mo

Started off reading this one quickly but lost momentum in the middle. Every book I read about thru hiking just makes me want to get my butt back out there. Memories of the John Muir Trail were swirling around in my brain. I liked his voice throughout this one but every so often found myself cringing at the absence of leave no trace methods of hiking. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Well turns out I do like me some grumpy old men getting lost in the woods. If you‘re a Bryson fan already, which I am, you‘re going to like this book. Brysons love of history and his endless “Did you know?” facts keep this book interesting. His arguments and peeves with his hiking mate Katz, keep it humorous. And he has a love for this trail and the wilderness. But this is as much about when we give up as when we push through. Very entertaining.

Centique PS that‘s a tree from the park I was in the other day. No idea what it is! 3y

Apparently one of the most divisive books among thru-hikers on the Appalachian Trail. A love or hate type of book. I thought it was decent. Bryson himself annoyed me greatly, but I loved his writing and his soliloquies of preservationist mentality and love for trees, animals, and true, unharmed wildlife. I wouldn‘t recommend this book, but overall liked to read it. Currently nursing a terribly timed, pre long walk foot 🥲

KathyWheeler I read it recently and liked it fine. I didn‘t know it was divisive among hikers. Why is that? 3y
sarahlandis @KathyWheeler I think because he didn‘t actually thru hike the trail, some thru hikers don‘t like it. Also he never seemed to particularly enjoy his time on the trail haha 3y

I was expecting a laugh riot when I began listening to this book. It‘s often shelved under humor and discussed that way. However, much of this book is pretty serious; there are descriptions of bear attacks, talk about mismanagement of public lands, and stories of a couple of murders on the Appalachian Trail. In between that, there is humor, but also a bit of smugness. Overall, I enjoyed this book.

I really hated this book and I would have DNF'd it if I wasn't reading this for my book club. Bryson starts the book talking about he's not a pussy like some men, which really put me off and reeked of toxic masculinity there. Yikes. He makes all these comments about people that are condescending that I just want to slap him. In some reviews, I see some love that he does it and thinks he's funny. I think he's an ass.
