Horowitz is the only writer authorized by Doyle's estate to write novels regarding Sherlock Holmes. The two main characters, Frederick Chase and Athelney Jones (seen in Doyle's “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons“) play out the archetypal roles of Holmes and Watson as they trail a criminal who is now in London attempting to take over Moriarty's territory after his supposed death by Holmes in the fight over the Reichenbach Falls. Fun for SH fans.
Hmmmm.....sorry mug of tea but positive vibes have left the room. So... I enjoyed the style of writing which is why I'm choosing so-so and not pan.
Problems - I guessed the big
twist within the first couple of pages.... Then dismissed it as unlikely based on ridiculousness and cheese factor. My bad, that dismissed idea IS indeed The Twist 🤮🤮
Second problem a bit spoilery so will hide it in comments if you don't want to see.
New read. Yes, I did use my sleeping dog's butt as a bookstand 😁
So I enjoyed House of Silk enough to give this one a go, even though I remember exactly zero about reading it! 📖🤔🤦♀️
🤨 Not my favorite. It started slow, the middle was better, and I thought the end was really not good. And not just because of the twist. I just felt myself rolling my eyes the last several chapters. I‘m glad I listened to this rather than having read it. If I had read it I‘d have been pretty peeved. I really liked The House of Silk, but this one . . . Not so much.
But others seemed to love it, so what do I know?
I read most, if not all, of Sherlock Holmes as a kid. Just after Moriarty & Holmes go missing over Reichenbach Falls. A Scotland Yard detective and a Pinkerton agent meet up and try to stop the man trying to take over Moriarty's crime empire.
I didn't realize this was the second in a series, but the marketing blurb on the cover said it was authorized by Doyle's estate, so I had to pick it up.
#mystery Read in 2020.
This was wonderful! What a twist! The second of two Sherlock Holmes retellings by Anthony Horowitz that @clconn17 put in my #NashvilleLittens Christmas swap box, & I loved them both! I also picked up Magpie Murders on a Kindle sale recently - becoming a big Horowitz fan. Thank you, Chiarra!

⭐⭐⭐⭐✨/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you for this, @BookNAround !
Last of 2020 = The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz
First of 2021 = Moriarty by Anthony Horowitz (the next in the series!)
I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

🦂 Outstanding book
I‘m a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and found this book an excellent continuation. I definitely fell for the deceptions and wasn‘t quite expecting the final turn in the narrative. The explanation left me feeling like I often do after reading Conan Doyle‘s stories: humbled but excited to see the mystery unravelled. Highly recommend for Sherlockians! 9/10
#7Days7Covers Day 2. And here we have the one and only book I have ever physically THROWN across the room, it made me so ANGRY. Luckily, the sturdy hardcover survived the fall. I can't say the same for poor Holmes and Moriarty, in the blood red Reichenbach illustration underneath the dust jacket. Or can I?? #happyMonday
@LibrarianRyan would you like to play?
I liked the concept more than the execution. The writing didn‘t draw you in. It was obvious it was building up to a dramatic ending but it took forever to get there and once it dead I felt like even that was clumsy, heavy handed, and way too long. It was vaguely entertaining.
I rated this #audiobook “so-so” because I found after a while that I didn‘t really care how it turned out. Though the text was well-crafted and even a bit old-fashioned to match the Conan Doyle stories, I didn‘t feel drawn in to the story. I kept listening because I‘d read in other reviews that the ending was exciting. And yes, there was certainly a powerful twist at the end. The author did indeed take me by surprise!
Not my cup of tea. I‘m not a big fan of retellings or reimagining with classic characters. And this book is no exception. This book didn‘t even remotely live up to the original. It‘s simply too hard to do better than Sir Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes.

Despite the fact its already 81 at 9:30 am and the high today will be 95 (probably over 100 with the heat index), I am indulging in my first PSL if the season & dreaming of crisp fall days. #heatwave #autumndreams #pumpkinspice #morningbreak
I'm looking to join a cool online book club for book recs and also to discuss books...any ideas and suggestions? Thanks in advance!
This was a great read! I have enjoyed both of Horowitz‘s books about the Sherlock Holmes characters. I liked that this one was centered around Moriarty but still had the Holmes feel to it. For some reason Lucy didn‘t want her picture taken and hid her face. 😹
[March08] The picture (taken from Pinterest) says it all why #Moriarty is a #LikableVillain. He's the only one who is as smart as Sherlock if not smarter, since Doyle initially created him to kill off Sherlock.
"Every fairytale needs a good old-fashioned villain. You need me, or you're nothing." - Moriarty to Sherlock

My obsession with all things Sherlock Holmes continues. Found this at the library book sale while at work today.
This one's a Kindle daily deal and I highly recommend it!
If you love anything Sherlock, get it ...
If you loved Magpie Murders, get it ...
If you love mysteries, cozy or otherwise, get it ...
If all the above apply, definitely get it ...
If none of the above apply, get it anyway!
🤓
I‘m making this a pick and I did give it 4 stars on Goodreads but, honestly, it‘s really more of an in-between sort of book. I had a hard time getting into it and the last quarter was the best part. It lined up nicely with The Final Problem. It has a nice little twist, even though one bit made me sad. #Sherlocked, but by Moriarty this time.
I was planning to read Kareem Abdul-Jabbar‘s Mycroft Holmes but this one was actually already called up on my Kindle so I guess I‘m reading it. I keep forgetting that I‘m reading about Moriarty sometimes, though. It‘s like when you take a drink of water and you it was going to be sweet tea. I just have to get into it and it‘ll be fine!
I think all these books have characters who qualify for #twofacedtuesday #knowyourenemy #spookyoctober #rocktober @Jess7 @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB
Attention Canadian friends! My Dollarama has a ton of Crowned Moriarty Funko Pop!s for $4 each. I didn't get one because I'm not a SHERLOCK fan, but if you are and you've always dreamed of owning a tiny, jewel-laden Moriarty with a big head, you should see if your local Dollarama has the same stock.
They also had Selina Kyle from GOTHAM. She was cute.
#day1 #90sinjuly Moriarty does seem to be more than a little #insaneinthebrain but I do love this portrayal of him! And the tagged book is a fun play on the character too...💕
#bookmail from the #BookOutlet sale last week!! #bookaddict #ihavenomoreroomforbooks
Moriarty from Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes would definitely have been a #Slytherin 🐍. I just had to use this pic of Andrew Scott whose portrayal of Moriarty in Sherlock is amazing. Also, if you haven't read Moriarty by Anthony Horowitz, I highly recommend it. 🤓💙

Power down for 30 minutes when I arrived at work this morning... no hot water for tea, but no computer either so that was an extra 30 to read :)
This was fun, and I didn't guess any of the twists and turns. I've got a head for mysteries and usually figure out the solution. Not this one! Very enjoyable, though if you get the audiobook note that the narrator took me a while to get used to.
I mostly saw the plot points of the mystery coming, but there was a good, juicy twist at the end. I listened to this one, and the narrator's American accent was not so good, so maybe eyes-on would have been a better choice.
Day 4 - I have to go with Moriarty for my favorite villain. I love the Sherlock stories when he battles Moriarty. #riotgrams #favoritevillians
#ReadJanuary #bestof I read most of my January tbr. I did the Sherlock challenge- read 4 books and listened to one ( A Study in Scarlet) for that challenge.
Also read:
1 mystery
1 historical fiction
2 classics (Sense and Sensibility/Heidi )
1 graphic novel
1 non-fiction ( Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck- audible)
Grand total- 11
My favorites were Moriarty and Passenger to Frankfurt both were suspenseful and surprising.
Not a bad start for 2017
A Sherlock Holmes mystery without Sherlock or Watson? Inspector Athelney Jones of Scotland Yard and Frederick Chase do their best Holmes and Watson impression after Holmes and Moriarty go over the Reichenbach Falls. What we get is a fun mystery with some not entirely unanticipated twists.
Cozy Saturday morning reading. This is the sequel to House of Silk. It's decent, but I'm a bit disappointed as Holmes & Watson aren't in it--it follows Inspector Jones and an American detective as they try to break up a small part of Moriarty's ring after Reichenbach. (Of course, they believe Holmes to be dead). This is my one read for #SHreads17
Finishing up my book and these guys (Darth and Grindylow) are keeping me company😁 #SHreads17 #Sherlocked
So stoked. Instead of getting pics to have autographed, I brought bookmarks. Osric Chau signed as Moriarty for me #hillywood #sherlock and Julian Richings signed as Death #supernatural 😸😻
Better than The House of Silk (which was very good) - I felt uneasy the entire time I was reading. Horowitz does a brilliant job of creating a sense of menace, while at the same time never establishing exactly where it is coming from. The best Sherlock Holmes pastiche I have read in a long time.
