"New York Times" bestseller! An unforgettable novel about a young Jewish woman growing up in Boston in the early twentieth century, told with humor and optimism through the eyes of an irresistible heroine ("People") from the acclaimed author of "The Red Tent." Anita Diamant s vivid, affectionate portrait of American womanhood ("Los Angeles Times"), follows the life of one woman, Addie Baum, through a period of dramatic change. Addie is The Boston Girl, the spirited daughter of an immigrant Jewish family, born in 1900 to parents who were unprepared for America and its effect on their three daughters. Growing up in the North End of Boston, then a teeming multicultural neighborhood, Addie s intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can t imagine a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture, and new opportunities for women. Addie wants to finish high school and dreams of going to college. She wants a career and to find true love. From the one-room tenement apartment she shared with her parents and two sisters, to the library group for girls she joins at a neighborhood settlement house, to her first, disastrous love affair, to finding the love of her life, eighty-five-year-old Addie recounts her adventures with humor and compassion for the naive girl she once was. Written with the same attention to historical detail and emotional resonance that made Diamant s previous novels bestsellers, "The" "Boston Girl" is a moving portrait of one woman s complicated life in twentieth century America, and a fascinating look at a generation of women finding their places in a changing world. Diamant brings to life a piece of feminism s forgotten history ("Good Housekeeping") in this inspirational page-turning portrait of immigrant life in the early twentieth century ("Booklist")."

After my skin check yesterday (I have a script for some chemo cream for my nose to start next winter) but before my next appointment with the building manager in my other apartment block to change the battery in the smoke detector as I can‘t reach it) and my 🩰 performances last night, I managed to fit in a trip to Kmart where I got my babies some cheap outfits and an op shop. I think the earrings will work for one of my Xmas dos. Grand total $15.

I loved hearing the story of this woman's life as if it is being told to her grandchild. I actually wanted much much more of the story. It starts in two year segments and then jumps dozens of years and ends quickly.

This was lent to me by a friend. Not really my sort of read but interesting to get a look at life over a time from before WW1 to 1985. A Jewish grandmother talking to her granddaughter.

This novel is set in 1985 and depicts an 85-year-old woman telling her life story to her granddaughter. It is riveting and well written. I loved it. There is not one boring page in this book. Highly recommended. I met Anita Diamant several years ago at a book signing; she graciously agreed to sign two books for me and we ended up having a nice conversation as well. She is down to earth and likable in addition to being a talented writer.

Another immersive trip into the past by Diamant, this time through the 20th century through one woman born to immigrant parents into a world rapidly changing, especially for women. Memorable voice of a woman who came into her own as she tells the story of 'how she became the woman she is to her granddaughter. 2019, no 6

What a wonderful story. I listened to the book, which I highly recommend, being read by a great actress, Linda Lavin. The premise of the story is an 85 yr old grandmother being interviewed by her granddaughter. Beginning in the early 1900‘s, she relates her childhood, early adulthood and trying to craft a career in times when women were expected to marry and procreate only. Just a beautiful story. 5⭐️. #feminist #massachusetts

Addie Baum, 85, tells the story of her life to her 22-year-old granddaughter, who has asked her "How did you get to be the woman you are today?" The story begins in 1915 with Addie as a young girl in Boston, and continues with her life's journey. It was simply OK, mostly because there isn't really any plot. Addie grows up; life happens to her, her sisters and her friends; children are born; people die; and then the novel just kind of ends. 2 stars

An 85-year-old Jewish grandmother imparts wisdom upon her 20-something-year-old granddaughter. Linda Lavin narrated skillfully—I was thoroughly engaged throughout. Quotes of note included "Who ever heard of a pickle that was sweet and soft? Feh!" and "He and I had what you would call a mutual admiration society . . . " (something I shared with my own Jewish grandmother—she sang or referenced the old song to me frequently).

Reviewsbylola I‘ve always wanted to read more of her books ever since I read and loved The Red Tent years ago. 6y

This book finally broke me out of a months long slump. Anyone who knows me knows I normally read a book a week so not being able to get into any I‘ve started since around mid June was painful. I flew through this, it was exactly the right amount of easy read and engaging story to help me flip the switch.

Looking for Litsyers in #Boston! I was part of a themed book club in Paris and really want to bring the idea back to Boston. The concept: you pick a theme (like sci-fi, books by women, etc) and then everyone reads a book of their choice on that theme. Get together, drink 🍷 of course, and each person talks about the book they read. Really fun way to read what you want and get introduced to new books. Comment on this post if you‘re interested!

Colly_Beau I'm a few minutes south of Providence, but I would totally be interested in taking the short train ride to Boston for something like this! 6y

When Addie Baum‘s granddaughter asks her how she became the woman she is today, Addie recounts her life story. Raised in a tenement apartment in Boston with her parents and two sisters in the early 1900s, she fights for an education and gradually moves beyond the confines of her family.

I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook and felt like I should call my grandma.

1985. Ava is interviewing her grandmother about “how she became the woman she is today.” The American born daughter of Jewish Russian immigrants; the only daughter born in America. With interjections to remind us Addie is being interviewed by her granddaughter, it feels as if the reader is witnessing the interview. A historical fiction story of a woman fighting for all women when females we‘re quite so empowered and independent.

Chelster91 I adored that book! Such a quick read and so satisfying! 7y

They say don‘t judge a book by its cover, but this one reminds of the tagged book. I didn‘t really enjoy The Boston Girl so I have absolutely no desire to read the copycat cover book. I know there are more exact examples of copies but this is similar enough that it drives me crazy. I feel the look is close enough that you would assume it‘s the same author. There is so much they can do with covers, why are they making so many of them so similar?

Bostonmomx2 Have you noticed this happens a LOT? It seems there are always lots of books with very similar covers, sometimes even coming out at similar times so sometimes it coinkidink but others can‘t be. It‘s kinda erie. 7y
