Red Seas Under Red Skies
Red Seas Under Red Skies | Scott Lynch
In his highly acclaimed debut, The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch took us on an adrenaline-fueled adventure with a band of daring thieves led by con artist extraordinaire Locke Lamora. Now Lynch brings back his outrageous hero for a caper so death-defying, nothing short of a miracle will pull it off. After a brutal battle with the underworld that nearly destroyed him, Locke and his trusted sidekick, Jean, fled the island city of their birth and landed on the exotic shores of Tal Verrar to nurse their wounds. But even at this westernmost edge of civilization, they cant rest for longand are soon back to what they do best: stealing from the undeserving rich and pocketing the proceeds for themselves. This time, however, they have targeted the grandest prize of all: the Sinspire, the most exclusive and heavily guarded gambling house in the world. Its nine floors attract the wealthiest clienteleand to rise to the top, one must impress with good credit, amusing behaviorand excruciatingly impeccable play. For there is one cardinal rule, enforced by Requin, the houses cold-blooded master: it is death to cheat at any game at the Sinspire. Brazenly undeterred, Locke and Jean have orchestrated an elaborate plan to lie, trick, and swindle their way up the nine floorsstraight to Requins teeming vault. Under the cloak of false identities, they meticulously make their climbuntil they are closer to the spoils than ever. But someone in Tal Verrar has uncovered the duos secret. Someone from their past who has every intention of making the impudent criminals pay for their sins. Now it will take every ounce of cunning to save their mercenary souls. And even that may not be enough.PRAISE FOR SCOTT LYNCH A bright new voice in the fantasy genre.George R. R. Martin Red Seas Under Red Skies Lynch hasnt merely imagined a far-off world, hes created it, put it all down on paperthe smells, the sounds, the people, the feel of the place. The novel is a virtuoso performance, and sf/fantasy fans will gobble it up.Booklist (starred review) Red Seas Under Red Skies firmly proves that Scott Lynch isnt a one-hit wonder. . . . Itll only be a matter of time before Scott Lynch is mentioned in the same breath as George R. R. Martin and Steven Erikson.Fantasy Book Critic Grand, grandiose, grandiloquent . . . No critic is likely to fault Lynch in his overflowing qualities of inventiveness, audacious draftsmanship, and sympathetic characterization.Locus The kind of witty romp that reminds you exactly how much fun heroic fantasy is supposed to be.SFXThe Lies of Locke Lamora Right now, in the full flush of a second reading, I think The Lies of Locke Lamora is probably in my top ten favorite books ever. Maybe my top five. If you havent read it, you should. If you have read it, you should probably read it again.Patrick Rothfuss, New York Times bestselling author of The Name of the WindFrom the Hardcover edition.

Book 2 done! Man that ending I really need to read book 3. It is very sailing terminology heavy but overall very good read. Exciting didn‘t want to put the book down.

While I enjoyed the first book, I loved the second one. Maybe because of the setting, but I also got a better feeling for the characters, got more into the story and was curious to find out what breathtaking ideas Locke comes up with next.

Te German version is read by Matthias Lühn and he does a really good job here, bringing the characters to life and each scene unique. What a marvel and what a great combination this audio book was 😍

Another Book 2. Last time I did this I bought book 3 & a special edition came out that I just had to have … yes, First Law 😁 I‘m enjoying Gentleman Bastards. Love new books.

DrexEdit That's a nice edition! I ❤️ the Gentleman Bastards as well. I need to finish out that series! 3y

Oy! At the 80% mark this book is really starting to feel like a slog. The paperback is over 700 pages and I haven‘t been that enthusiastic about it since I started. I enjoyed The Lies of Locke Lamora—the first book in the series—much more than this. #isitoveryet

I had to go right to the second book of the series, the first was fantastic!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Book 3‘s good too! The only problem is that book 4, The Thorn of Emberlain, is up there with The Winds of Winter and The Doors of Stone on the list of fantasy books that have been delayed for years and years and years. 4y

Catch up #WyrdAndWonder Day 13: a friend in need

The central friendship of the Gentleman Bastards is a huge part of the reason I love Scott Lynch‘s fantasy conmen as much as I do. Jean Tannen is the friend Locke Lamora needs, if not always the one he sometimes deserves 😉

I love Locke and Jean so it was great to spend time with them again as they pull off another signature heist. So many things go wrong and watching them adjust their plans was very entertaining. This felt different than the first installment as it dealt with a new land and environment. I look forward to the next installment.
With this I've now finished three on the list for #BookSpinBonanza.

I just did the math. If I want to finish all 20 books for #BookSpinBonanza by the end of the month I need to read at least 318 pages per day. It seems like a daunting task but I'm thinking it's also possible so idk. At least this gives me a pacing goal to focus me if I really want to complete the entire challenge.

TheAromaofBooks Intense but doable!! Good luck! 5y

I tried. I didn‘t care for the first book, but gave the second a try because of book club and I had the audio. I made it 8:30 into a 25:30 book. It was getting to the point where I wanted to claw my face off. So it‘s time I finally dnf a book instead of making my life miserable.

Locke and Jean plan to clean out the vault of a casino, but due to [spoilers] they end up sailing on a pirate ship.

This book had good parts, but most of it felt like watching a cat chase its own tail.

Good afternoon!

My stats for the #24B4Monday #readathon. Those 5 hours are not as good as I had hoped, but I've still got time to catch up. 😁
Stats are excluding reading lots of posters while my daughter visited several tiny courses at her potential secondary school, and my son's homework essay about why sugary snacks and drinks should be banned from the school kiosk.

Guess I'd be entitled to say 6 hours 😉

@TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65 @jb72

Andrew65 That‘s a great total. 👏👏👏 5y

Deifio So what kind of potions do your kids want to make? Maybe something to paint your bookshelves with so they magically hold twice that many books? That would be helpful 😉 5y
julesG @Deifio I presume they hope I will do the magic and cook up something that magically does their homework and chores. I was actually hoping I'd teleport to a lovely reading spot by touching the stone in the middle. Not necessarily time travel as in Outlander, just somewhere nice and cozy. 😁 5y

Double dip from my currently reading pile (so much for the forecast).

Both stories about master thieves. Both MCs must have been born under a #LuckyStar. They are capable of stealing anything, even the #Masterpiece from the most protected vault in town.

Love this series ❤ I'm rereading it on Audible and its just as fun as I remember. It's a series but each book can be a standalone as the guys get up to different adventures in each one. It sets the bar for creative cursing 😂

I wish I'd picked up this book sooner! It was a good follow-up to The Lies of Locke Lamora, and it was great to spend time with Jean and Locke again and see how the consequences of that story affected them. This one was more about Jean, with a great focus on tension within a friendship. There's also a heist, a poorly thought out plan, and kickass, tough, sassy, lady pirates. Picking up the next for sure.

Locke and Jean have a try at the pirate life and it‘s as entertaining as you can imagine. The heist part of the book feels only secondary to their nautical adventures but is still very cleverly concluded.

julesG I just bought this. Is this part of a series? 7y
Maike @julesG yes, it‘s the second in the Gentleman Bastards series. You should start with the first one: 7y

This time for a #bookrainbow I thought I'd try by title instead of by the colour of the cover. Turns out, I have no books with orange or yellow in the title. And I had to use author instead of title for violet(te). Several choices for red, green and blue though.
