Andromeda Strain
Andromeda Strain | Michael Crichton
The United States government is given a warning by the pre-eminent biophysicists in the country: current sterilization procedures applied to returning space probes may be inadequate to guarantee uncontaminated re-entry to the atmosphere. Two years later, seventeen satellites are sent into the outer fringes of space to "collect organisms and dust for study." One of them falls to earth, landing ina desolate area of Arizona.Twelve miles from the landing site, in the town of Piedmont, a shocking discovery is made: the streets are littered with the dead bodies of the town's inhabitants, as if they dropped dead in their tracks. The terror has begun . . .

If watching a 1970‘s film that uses saturated Kodachrome and Panovision and not quite A list stars is your thing, then this bit of nostalgic Sci-Fi is for you. This is not steampunk, this is digital museum stuff- full of whirring computers, teletypes and radio waves. I‘m still glad I read it, especially since it won‘t be too long before it is sucked down into the swamp of forgettable books.

I read this for #NSR221 Reads, it is not my favorite genre at all. Too technical and I am not very good at understanding science. I do like books that deal with the world ending though. @Nessavamusic This is a Hard Sci-fi.

I expected this to be way better. It was slow, with little to no action, and read more like a technical manual than a suspense/thriller. Maybe it was good for it‘s time (1969)? I‘m willing to forgive things for being out dated, ohh boy the computers were, but there were still no characters to root for or even care about. And the ending… well… it felt like the author just wanted the book done too🧫🧬🥼

Friend recommend me to read Michael Crichton, got to say it was pretty enjoyable and a really fast read! Definitely a page turner once it starts going. Little unsatisfied with the ending but appreciated the science it was pretty cool. Overall I would recommend it since it was such a quick read and the science seems pretty solid.

First read Andromeda Strain many moons ago, after I'd read Jurassic Park in ninth grade and fallen in love with Crichton's writing. At the time, I wasn't as enamoured of Andromeda. It's coming up on three decades, and I have a greater appreciation for it now. It's one of Crichton's earliest works. Fascinating to see the growth of a writer from early works to becoming well-established. As a writer, and more seasoned reader, I can appreciate this!

🎧 do you remember the 1971 movie!? I loved that movie & would watch it whenever it came on tv late at night. The movie follows the book pretty closely. It‘s a short book at about 8 hours & the narration is good. It‘s pretty sciencey/medically for 1971. This author also wrote Jurassic Park! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was somewhat disappointed with this. I listened to the audiobook, and thought several times that it sounded like a documentary. There was a lot of explaining the science and very little action. And the ending was abrupt and anticlimactic. On the positive side, the science of the story was interesting and, I imagine, quite radical for a 1969 audience. #audiobook #audible #scifi

rretzler I think it was a much better book back in the early 70s when I initially read it. I don‘t think it ages well. 5y
tournevis @rretzler I agree, though I still think it's the best Crichton book. Everything got flashier, and actioner, and ever more commercial after Congo, which is sooo baaad, and so racist. 5y
rretzler @tournevis Honestly with the exception of the Jurassic series, I quit reading Crichton in the 70s. I really liked all of them, but I quite enjoyed The Great Train Robbery. I think the last one I read was 5y
tournevis @rretzler I liked Westworld, but I had issues that I had to force myself to overlook. I found Jurassic Park completely meh. Aside for the sleeping and burping T Rex scene, which still makes me laugh. 5y
cherinium @rretzler @tournevis I agree that it probably didn't age well. Overlooking that, the thing that disappointed me was that it was pretty much just a bunch of guys talking about their observations and findings. That got pretty boring after a while. Then, they suddenly figured everything out and the book ended. The only other Crichton I've read is Jurassic Park (just the one), and I really enjoyed it. Still lots of science, but also action. 5y

In #Contagion TNG epi 3.11 we learn Picard is an archeologist, Iconians could cross light-years as easily as we cross a room, computer viruses are bad, and Starfleet doesn‘t practice network prophylactics. Also featuring Toronto‘s City Hall.

As such, the only Michael Crichton book I like is The Andromeda Strain. Again, as with all his books, the film is better (the 1st film, 1971; the 2008 film is baaaaaaad).

gradcat Very cool post 😎! 5y
Megabooks Love these facts! Timeline is my favorite Crichton, but I enjoyed The Andromeda Strain as well. Never seen either movie, though. 5y
tournevis @Megabooks Andromeda is a fine medical thriller with a side of body horror and the first movie is slow and oppressive, just like the book. The second movie is action adventure horror with a nonsense romantic plot, and no about of Benjamin Bratt looking fine can compensate. 5y
Megabooks I think any movie that can be made into an action movie is. Up next The Perks of Being a Wallflower...with Guns! (First inappropriate movie that came to mind. 😂😂) 5y

This book has been on my TBR list for years. I finally got around to reading. I liked that it was heavy on the science... even more so than The Martian. Therefore, this book is not for everyone one. It was a bit dry and read in places like a text book. Because I found the subject fascinating I didn't mind. The whole idea that aliens might try to contact us through a virus. Very imaginative and well researched. 4 stars... but

TheSpineView I would recommend only to those readers that have a real interest in science or can overlook dry reading. 6y
RamsFan1963 @TheSpineView It's almost like reading a police report, just the facts ma'am, very cut dry and straight forward. The Terminal Man is the same way. 6y
ravenlee Story time - when I worked at BN this was on a high school reading list. A woman came in and needed “a drama about a strain” for her kid‘s class. We suggested this book. She said, “no, he can‘t have gotten it that wrong!” Called her kid, came back to the desk looking very sheepish for a copy of The Andromeda Strain. 6y

Just finished The Andromeda Strain and I loved it! I am also not ashamed to say that some parts of the book were too technical for me to understand. Especially, the medical tests and their results, don‘t be afraid to have google open while you are reading. If you have an interest in Biology, Virology, Pathology, Chemistry, Medicine, Engineering...basically everything hard-science you‘ll love this book. Finished this up in about a day.

There are two scenes in the beginning of this novel that kept me going because they were goosebump good. And I kept waiting for that intensity to come back throughout the rest of the book, and it just didn't happen. The characters are wooden, so I didn't care when anything bad happened to any of them. And the science. Oh, dear god, the science. I've never read a fiction book so full of charts, graphs, memos, equations... Ugh, no. Snooze.

It seamlessly blends the what if with the what is (circa 1970)

Great book. The ending is slightly disappointing at first, but after further consideration I respect the ending and find it satisfactory. I love science, so I appreciated the scientific aspects of the book. However, if you do not like that sort of thing, you will most likely find this a laborious read at times.

Alfoster I think when it first came out it was a lot more shocking. Science has progressed so far now that it feels inevitable!! 8y
