Frances Hardinge is a damn good storyteller (and Emilia Fox is a top notch narrator)! Yes, there are gothic shenanigans involving an eldritch tree that thrives on lies and produces psychotropic truth-fruits. Then there is a suspicious death to be investigated. But *really* it is about scientifically-minded Faith refusing to content herself with the crumbs that fall from the table as she grows towards womanhood in the Victorian era.

I devoured this book. Told from the perspective of a young Victorian woman rebelling against the conformity of her time, while trying to solve a murder and indulge in the science she loves. A wicked little book, full of ghosts, mysteries and of course, lies.

This has been in my TBR pile for ages! A YA fantasy/mystery set in Victorian times, centring around "a tree that feeds off whispered lies and bears fruit that reveals hidden secrets". I really enjoyed it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

No doubt that This is beautifully written and loved how it all came together at the end but personally a tad too slow

Quite different to what I usually read but I enjoyed it. Was an interesting story.

This young adult novel is very engaging. I am always enamored with YA books that are smart and make the reader think. This book fits that perfectly. The main character, Faith, is smart and feisty. She has to deal with the death of her father, a mother she does not understand, and a society that expects her to be less than what she is. She also has possession of a tree that bears fruit only when whispered lies.

I teach dual-credit classes on a high school campus, and the school's librarian is one of my former students, so SHE INVITED ME TO THE SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR!

3⭐'s. It took me a long time to get into it and then when I did I lost interest not long after. Not the best book I've read.

Not only is this science-centric, female-led mystery novel a thrilling read, full of unreliable characters; it also looks beautiful on your shelf.

A great book, but not what I thought it was going to be. I thought (of course by the title) it was about the lie tree. It was actually more about Faith and the prejudices against female scientists. It was a character driven book, and I enjoyed it. I just felt like I was cheated just a bit. (Also a pet peeve is that the fruit in the book is nothing like the cover. Maybe that doesn‘t bother most people but it bothers me.)

I‘m just in the library with my daughter. I promised myself that I won‘t get anything for me... but then I saw this and it was calling me 😂 I‘m sure most of you can relate

OMG, I loved this gothic YA fantasy! Full of family secrets, mysterious deaths, and Victorian sensibilities, this wonderfully dark tale of revenge had me quickly hooked. Also, this book gets extra Brownie points in that all the main characters are female, and they are all fighting battles in whatever way they can at a time when women were supposed to be no more than somebody's wife or sister.

I read this in 12 hours. Amazing language and a brilliant author who can lead you on twists and turns

My #allhallowsread pick for this year. Loved it so much the first time I read it that I have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to squeeze this back into my TBR for a re-read. My front cover blurb would be, “beautifully grim.” It‘s a delightful mix of historical fiction, fantasy, murder mystery, horror, and feminist credo. 🖤🖤🖤 What‘re you reading for Halloween? 🎃👻🦇

This was a really satisfying read. I think if Tracy Chevalier and Neil Gaiman ever collaborate it would turn out something like this. I loved that the fantasy was believable and that the main character, Faith, learned to cope with her loss and anger in a way that gave her a more realistic view of people.

One great adventure! I‘m not usually a fan of books containing fantasy as I prefer believable stories; however, I completely fell in love with the main character of this book and she made the story for me. This book definitely does not fit neatly into any genre, and I believe that is a good thing! Dark, drily funny, suspenseful and original.

Loved this young adult fantasy mystery with a strong, edgy young heroine determined to prove her father was murdered. Highly recommended.

#ReadingResolutions Day 12: #BookAndBlanket (beach blanket while in Maldives 2yrs ago). While I felt that the book ran on longer than I would have liked, the characters were well-rounded and make the reader slightly invested in what the ending would be. The story also portrayed the fall of the mighty and the respected, the many faces of femininity and womanhood – and how a lady is able to make use of the assets/advantages at her disposal. ⬇️

Did not finish. Couldn't get past the first chapter, just not my thing. (Mostly in terms of writing style)

Pretty cool cover under the dust jacket of this book I randomly picked up. Textured black with a shiny burnt orange foil for the words. (Tried to read but too many distractions in the school library right now!)

Set in the 1800s, this is an empowering book, as it explores the themes of feminism and science. It encourages young girls to step up and be more than what society limits them to do. A great read.

Faith has an extremely powerful personality which ( quite typically ) was subdued by the male chauvinist society. A girl hungry for knowledge, Faith spins a complex yarn of lies to find her father's murderer. Helping her along the way is a tree that gives fruit fed by a lie,offering a look into the future. The book had me gripped from the beginning. A must read if you like a perfect blend of darkness, mystery and good plot twist..😃😀

This is my first time with this author, what can you tell me about her? Do you enjoy her books? Her writing?

I don't know how to review this book, as I've literally never read anything quite like it before. It is truly an original and a masterpiece and deserves every INCH of praise it's been getting. It is dark and complex and beautiful and compelling and sad and scary and funny and imaginative and...and...can you tell I loved it? It's also a feminist triumph! Just. Read. It.

Faith, is #AChildWiththeGhost of her dead father influencing her actions and thoughts. Her quest to restore her father‘s reputation leads her into all kinds of trouble, some of which involve a tree that grows truths if you feed it lies. 🌳

ATL got 1-2 inches of snow last night, and the city has ground to a halt. It‘s not a problem for me though, plenty of reading to do!

Good shit! A lot of tiresome Victorian gentlemen for everyone to navigate around, but a great, clever protagonist and generally entertaining writing style.
