Question: what does everyone do with books they want to unhaul?? These are all duplicates that I don‘t need 😬

Part 2/2 book unhaul

#BookNerd 🤓📚💙

P.S. If you live in the Frederick, MD area and want any of these let me know 😊 Free to a good home 📚

CoverToCoverGirl I always donate my extras to goodwill. 2y
Kimzey I share them with friends, slip them into little free libraries, donate to Goodwill, donate to a halfway house and donate to a charity that provides books to prison libraries. The director of the prison project said the books (softcover only) literally get read to pieces. 2y
Addison_Reads I offer them up here on Litsy as a #PayItForward first and then I ask my local library book club. If no one claims them I divide it up and donate to my local library or the one little free library we have in town. 2y
See All 8 Comments
xicanti I give them to friends or stick them in Little Free Libraries. It could be worth seeing if there are any used bookstores in your area that‘d give you cash or store credit for them, too. 2y
Kitta I donate mine to a local used bookstore or I give them to a little free library! 2y
alisiakae I usually drop them off in a free little library. 2y
Simona First I ask my friends and coworkers if they want them, the rest I donate to library or used bookstore. 2y
Laughterhp I ask friends, then give them to my library or a little free library! 2y

Otherland starts out with threads that are each fascinating, but seem unrelated. The main one follows a professor in a South African university, whose brother is comatose after an encounter in virtual reality, launching her into an investigation of powerful forces shaping the world for their own gain. Hang on, because some of these threads don't tie together until nearly the end, but tie in they do, in unsuspected ways.

The Otherland series is one I‘ve always wondered why more people weren‘t reading. Yeah, they‘re heavy duty door stopper chunksters. But this story has so much depth, I was lost in it. An incredible cast of characters too. I loved them!

It took me FOREVER to read this! It was off and on for over 2 years and then a couple of months on audio (it‘s a long listen!). But in the end I really enjoyed it. I‘m glad I read it.

GrilledCheeseSamurai You did it! 👏 6y
DivaDiane @GrilledCheeseSamurai I did! I actually finished it a couple of months ago, but I haven‘t been doing Litsy. 6y

DivaDiane @BarbaraBB that‘s very sweet of you! Yes, I‘ve had to take a step back from Litsy. It was take up too much of my life and I wasn‘t really getting good discussions out of it. I admit to going back to Goodreads for that. 5y

📺 Nope.
📺 Netflix & YouTube.
📺 Anime And Scifi.
📺 Rarely. I prefer music on if I'm reading.
📺 The Sandman comics. Also, the Otherland series by Tad Williams.

I‘ve stalled again on Vol. 1 of Otherland, so I checked Audible once again, because I couldn‘t believe there really wasn‘t an audiobook version of it already and lo, and behold! It comes out on July 17, so I pre-ordered it, using one of the credits that‘ve been piling up. I‘m sure I will finally be able to put this to rest as an audio book. @GrilledCheeseSamurai

GrilledCheeseSamurai I've started actively reading this one again. Im around the 25% mark now. 👍 6y
DivaDiane @grilledcheesesamurai Slow down there, Flash! I won‘t be starting again till July 17, when I get the audio book! Goodreads tells me I‘m at 28%. (edited) 6y
DivaDiane @GrilledCheeseSamurai So, to start a bit of discussion: I‘m really liking the story of Renie looking for her brother. I‘m rather bored and perplexed by the other story that seems more like a surreal dreamscape (or probably video game hallucinations) than a coherent story. That said, the most recent but I Read was interesting. 6y
See All 9 Comments
GrilledCheeseSamurai @DivaDiane I rather like the story with Paul Jonas. I suppose the main focus though is indeed on Renie and !Xabu. Waddya think of Mr. SELLER 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai Oops. Waddya think of Mr. Sellers, the creepy old dude that eats soap? Oh...oh...and that Dread guy! Friggen awesome! 🤘 6y
DivaDiane Oh! Mr. Sellers! I‘d completely forgotten about him! Who‘s the Dread guy? @GrilledCheeseSamurai (edited) 6y
DivaDiane @GrilledCheeseSamurai I‘m afraid the release of the audio book has been delayed. By a whopping 6 weeks! I won‘t get it till 30 August!! Arrgh! Who‘s the Dread guy?!? 6y
GrilledCheeseSamurai Dread is the Murderer guy that listens to music jacked into his head? 6y

1. The Otherland Series, hands down. (I was thinking # of pages.. they're long books!!)
2. Discovery of Witches.. 😬🙊🙈.. this is most unusual for me bc I normally love witches and vampires and have a hard time walking away from a book. That one was clearly *not* for me.
3. Generally pass it on... I keep ones that I'll want to lend out or *definitely* reread (ie the most favoritestests of the favorites)
4. Yep!
#weekendchat @CSeydel

rubyslippersreads Discovery of Witches was a disappointment for me too. I wanted to love it. 7y
Avanders @rubyslippersreads maybe that was the problem.. it was already so built up by the time I got to it.... 7y
Crewgurl I agree on The Discovery of Witches. I gave up on it too. 7y

You guys, I have FINALLY gotten through the first major section of Otherland Vol. 1!! I‘m glad I‘m finally making progress on this book. Goodreads tells me I started this on Dec. 12, 2016!! Not to mention that it was given to me as a gift in the late 1990‘s. Probably 1998, which makes it one of the oldest unread books in my collection! #MountTBR #otherlandbuddyread

I‘m finally getting back into this! I was hoping I could get the audiobook so I wouldn‘t have to lug this brick around (770 pages of hardcover), but Audible doesn‘t have it (in English! In German, yes! English, no?!?) and neither does my library. I will do my best to read from it every day, but I may get through it quickly!

LazyDays Ive been trying to read this book for a long while now! Let me know how you like it!👏☺🌈 7y
DivaDiane @LazyDays Join is! This will be a relaxed read, since I can‘t/won‘t drag it around with me. I‘m only 130 pages in. I‘m enjoying it, but it‘s not soooo amazing that I just have to read it every chance I get. Hence, it‘s been on my #MountTBR and #currentlyreading list forever. I‘ve taken long breaks as other books have distracted me. 🤭 7y

When it came to picking a #belovedseries I had a very hard time. I have so many great series among my shelves. The Wheel of Time will always be my favorite, but I can't harp on it constantly and ignore all the other great series I've discovered over the years. So this time, I'm going with the Otherland series. The condition of my poor, battered paperback copies probably speaks to how much I've enjoyed reading them. 😁

Here's the first few words of City Of Golden Shadow, from the Otherland series.

There's just something about the way Tad Williams tells a story that clicks with me. I've heard lots of folk complain about him being to wordy or slow moving. Not me. The man could write a book about eating a sandwich and I'd buy the hardcover! 🙋‍♂️

So happy to be back in his words again. 😍

Reggie Yeeesh that last sentence!!! Lol 7y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Reggie haha. Awesome. It was that last sentence that made me wanna blurb it! 👍 7y
DivaDiane Yeah, those bits are very evocative, but I have to wonder what the two different settings have to do with one another? How long do we have to wait to be clues in? Do you remember? 7y

GrilledCheeseSamurai @DivaDiane This first book, honestly, is like a reeeeeeeally long set-up book for the rest of the series. To really grasp what is happening and to and to get to the real meat and potatoes of the story, well, you're probably gonna have to wait until book 2 7y
DivaDiane Ok, that‘s good to know. I can go along with that knowing in advance! 7y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @DivaDiane it's a helluva set up though 😁. And the way the book ends really makes you want to jump right into the next one. 👍 7y

@DivaDiane and I are about to do a #OtherlandBuddyRead of City of Golden Shadow (1st of 4 in the Otherland series).

I read these back when they first came out in the mid 90's and as Tad is one of my favorite authors I wanted to revisit. It's a casual (side book) read so if any one else wants to join in...go for it! It's a no pressure go at your own pace kinda thing. @DivaDiane has already started and I'm gonna begin this week/weekend. 🙌

DivaDiane Awesome, thanks for this! 7y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I read them as they came out too! I know that @2BR02B is a fan as well. 7y
DivaDiane @GrilledCheeseSamurai I can tell you love his writing! I have to say, my first book by him was Tailchaser‘s Song and it was a DNF. I couldn‘t understand it, because I love cats and that title... well, I‘ve been reluctant to read anything more, but I have Otherland (which was a gift) and the first of M, S and T also. Hoping to get over the disappointment of T‘s S. 7y
2BR02B @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I am, but I've only read the first... And it was about three years ago now. I've been trying to decide if I should reread it before reading River of Blue Fire. 7y
2BR02B So I might lowkey read along with you guys, if that's cool. 👻 7y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @2BR02B That's totally cool! Like I said, it's a casual re-read. No pressure or deadlines. It's just fun knowing there are peeps to talk with that are reading what you are at the same time! 👍 7y

What better place to achieve the #perfectillusion than in virtual reality? Become somebody new by creating a virtual sim (avatar) - the only limit is your own imagination. I really enjoyed this 4 volume science fiction saga, but as it was written in the late 90's I'm not sure how it would hold up today.

The subtitle of the first book is City of Golden Shadows and I worked through this series in high school and college #goldenyears

They are all huge (that's how Tad Williams rolls) and tell the tale of a global fellowship battling their way through the myriad worlds of an immense virtual reality simulation, from ancient Troy to Wonderland, to stop its villainous creators.

At a family event I totally hid and read Mountain of Black Glass all day.

Back at the Nest of Blankets and Books, we have the books I'm currently reading. I've been switching between fiction and non-fiction today. Both have been on my TBR forever. One is set in a technologically advanced world where full immersion virtual reality is available and the other talks about murder in early 19th century London. If I were to arrange my books by (original) publication date, the 1990s would be a very thin section. (Why? Was almost nothing good published then? Or did I get them all from the library?) There's the three first Harry Potter books of course. (OMG, 2017 will be the 20th anniversary! 😳) And then I have Otherland. I've been meaning to read the rest of the series.
