pickThis was my bookclub's pick for last month and I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it. But it was so strange that it was engaging and I ended up baffled but satisfied. It was weird lol. It definitely made for an interesting discussion with my friends. Overall I'm glad I finally read it.

pickI'm so happy I got this complete edition way back in the day because it feels so much more complete narratively.
There were definitely times I had to pause because the things described on paper were horrific and made me out right uncomfortable, but I am also so glad I finally got to read it.
My only criticism so far is the slang doesn't use the right conjugation. I'm going to give the author the benefit of the doubt and say that this was done on purpose, but it's still funny to me when people are “govoreeting“ instead of “govorat.“ and “Malenky“ instead of “nimnoga“
It's a bit easier to get through now that I'm older but the slang is still throwing me off. (The curse of being fluent in that language)
pickI quite enjoyed this in the end. It's quite on the nose in its exploration of various ideas, but on the whole not bad. And the whole language thing is v clever

#OnThisDay in 1917, English author Anthony Burgess was born. A gifted linguist, Burgess once translated T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land into Persian, and created the language of Nadsat for his best known work, The Clockwork Orange. That title is said to be a play on words, it is speculated that Burgess misheard "chocolate orange" while in Glasgow Pub and liked the mondegreen so much he used it for his book. #HistoryGetsLIT

I could not put this book down! I read it over the course of two days. Not sure what I can say about it that hasn‘t already been articulated in a much better way by much smarter people than I. Suffice it to say I thought it was an excellent study of human nature and what “evil” we all allow in ourselves and therefore, in our world. Burgess wrote using the Nadsat language in such a way that the story flows almost like a work by ⬇️
pickMother-Daughter Book Club Verdict: A pick for the brilliant, chilling writing, the Nadsat language, the dystopian setting, but less so for Burgess‘s thesis on criminality/free will and Alex‘s character development. The influence of Cold War paranoia is strong as is the white male misogynistic POV. We both disagree with Burgess‘s defense of Ch.21 which feels tacked on and weak and doesn‘t demonstrate true character development. ⤵️

Diving into this as a summer read along with my soon to be Senior daughter - her high school sent home copies to help get a jumpstart on Honors English. Somehow managed never to read this (or even see all of the Kubrick movie 😱) until now.

so-soThis book disappointed me! I thought all the main themes are grossly obvious. I also am just not really a huge fan of violence in general, so duh it didn't really click with me. I didn't hate it completely though. Alex was one of those characters that you hate but love, is terrible, but you kind of root for at the same time.
If anyone has 30 mins to kill i got a notice via the burgess foundation on twitter that this interesting documentary is on bbc iplayer for another 4 days. A look at how paperback covers have changed with particular reference to 1984. Definitely a pleasant half an hour with a cup of tea on a rainy Saturday.
pickThis book was OUT THERE, I‘ll readily admit. In just a few short chapters, I had effortlessly adapted to this brand new language, utilizing words that don‘t even exist outside of this novel. It is incredibly sophisticated and unique in what it does with language, separating it from every other book I have read. Love this book!
Vintage books are my favourite. 1973 edition. I'm not really needing to use the dictionary in the back to understand Nadsat, managing on my oddy-knocky 😉 thought provoking distopia, oh my brothers

so-soA Clockwork Orange is not an enjoyable read. I don‘t think that I could recommend it, but simultaneously I wouldn‘t discourage anyone from reading it either. My tl;dr summary would be that everyone is evil, there are no good guys, and everything sucks. Used bookstore haul of paperback classics.
A Clockwork Orange is in rough condition, but it's one of the early American editions with the missing chapter! All the current printings are restored with the 21st chapter, so it's a bit of a novelty.

This was a very strange reading experience. The nadsat language really distanced me from the story - I kept having to stop and think about what a certain word meant - but as most of the story was fairly awful subject matter, maybe that was for the best.

Nicked this book from my brothers bedroom when I was about 12 😱😱 have never forgotten it. Can‘t say I actually liked it but it has stayed with me. These are hubby‘s as he does like it....
Made me laugh so hard. The book (Clockwork Orange) was so much better than the controversial film.
