A brilliant HS student, Caden Bosch has delusions that are sheer reality for him. In his mind, he‘s on a ship that's headed for the deepest point on Earth: Challenger Deep, the southern part of the Marianas Trench.
“The things I feel cannot be put into words, or if they can, the words are in no language anyone can understand.”

This is the year I finally complete the Pop Sugar Challenge! Normally I skip prompts I don't like but this year I'm going for it. The Pantone reading challenge and the ABC Reading Challenge are new to me this year, but lots of fun.

Book Recs I'm looking for:

A book published in 1981
Written during NaNoWriMo
Started as Fan Fiction

Pantone Colors: Oyster Mushroom, Summer Song and Leak Green

Mental illness of psychosis/schizophrenia through the eyes of a teenager. Caden loves two lives; a real world and a mystery one on a ship. The story follows as these two worlds collide into what is real. This is a difficult book to read because it holds no bars. The authors child went through this and helped. One thing that stuck was how Cadens views on the world and his parents changed from start to finish.

To acclimate the reader inside the mind of a schizophrenia patient, Neal Shusterman begins the novel in second person. Using elements of the second person voice, Shusterman lets the reader know that there is something different about Caden and that this story will be an emotional deep dive into his fears and hopefully his abilities to overcome the voices in his head. Beautiful story!

Wow. This book is an examination of mental illness, drawn from the author‘s own son‘s experience. I‘ve read books that deal with anxiety and depression, but never one that really digs into psychosis/schizophrenia. It was eye-opening and sad and beautifully written. It‘s in the “teen” genre because it‘s about a teenager but this story has a broad audience. Readers of all ages can learn from this book. #petsoflitsy #dogsoflitsy #loki #rescuedogs

Finished this yesterday over coffee. Caden Bosch is torn between figuring out what is real and what is not as he descends into mental illness. The plot of this MG/YA novel is unclear at the beginning but it slowly unravels as Caden talks about his life and his friends and family. This wasn't my type of read per se but it's a good one, and would make a great school read or YA bookclub discussion.

A friend said that the book was a good read.

1ReVeluvY The story is told in the perspective of Caden Bosch. He is the unreliable narrator who develops schizophrenia and experiences the symptoms of the mental illness as the story progresses. The story is structured in a way where Caden explains his thoughts which represents situations and characters that appear in real life. The way he interprets reality would be taken over by his thoughts but eventually clears as he conquers the mission of diving the 5y
1ReVeluvY deepest point on earth. As the mission comes to an end, his illness does as well.

He realizes that what is down the trench was not worth it and that the parrot, who represents Dr. Poirot who had a role in helping him get better, was right. The puzzle piece of the sky guided him up the trench, which may be a metaphor for the state of his illness at that moment. ~That moment could be due to the effect of cheeking his medicine for the first time be
5y
1ReVeluvY cause the people he had liked to be with at the hospital leave him. Carlyle had to leave because he took the blame of lacking the responsibility for the group he took care of since it led to Hal‘s attempted suicide (nobody really knows his condition since Caden never got that news) and was free from all the burden. When actually, Hal, who represents the navigator in Caden‘s thoughts, was going through something that most likely related to his 5y
1ReVeluvY relationship with his mom. ~ The puzzle needed to be complete just like how Caden had to be complete again in one place so that he can identify reality and the captain‘s convincing (the captain who may symbolize that the illness that can approach at any time but Caden knows that he will not join the captain's voyages for a long while). Caden is reunited with his family as a member of the rational world once again, free from burden and confusion. 5y

Genre: Young adult fiction
Book started: 10/11/19
Book completed: 10/16/19
Chosen: Read the back of the book (blurb)
Summary: Caden Bosch has two worlds the real one and the one in his mind. Over the past months he loses his grip on reality and close ones start to notice his odd behaviour. He goes through a lot of paranoia and treatment. As he's clear he gets to go home, but though it could come back he knows to be the bigger person.

Mental illness--such an important topic, and this book captures what it is like to be tormented by inner demons that require hospitalization, therapy and medication to be vanquished. Shusterman compares mental illness to a tempestuous ocean with beasts that require confrontation. It took me three times of starting this book to figure out where he was going, but once I got it, it was worth the ride. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

The writing style of this book took a little getting used to, but it‘s worth it. The story centers on a teenager suffering from mental illness and is told from his perspective, which includes both real events and events that are constructs of his illness.

Some heavy topics are covered here but the story is also told with humor and empathy.

Hope you guys enjoy it too!

I can see how that part would be jarring for a reader that is used to realism maybe? 6y
