pickI read this as a kind of break from the other books I‘ve been reading and was not disappointed. This comic had a great art style and a fast pace. Also, having read the shades of magic series, I loved seeing the references and characters mentioned there.

pickI frequently felt I was missing something while reading this but what I did get I liked so much, I'm puttingt this as a pick and looking into the rest of the story! Really happy to be have been introduced to this series.

I Think I would have liked this graphic novel way better if I had read the Dark Shade of Magic books. There was a lot I didn‘t understand. The graphics however were excellent and have made me want to move the novels up my TBR.

I finally got volumes 2 and 3 for Christmas, so I am doing a reread of volume 1 today 🤗 A Darker Shade of Magic is the series that got me back into reading as an adult, and I love this world. Excited to jump back in.
#122 of my year and this is vol 1 of the series, I have vol 2 being delivered today 🤓 also I love V.E. Schwab so much and can‘t wait to devour these. I‘m listening to In The Woods Somewhere by Hozier 💛
pickI love the Shades of Magic Series by Schwab, and I absolutely love this first prequel graphic novel. The main character is Maxim, Rhy's father and Kell's adoptive father, and it follows his adventures before he is the King we know in book one. So good!
pickA slight pick (with some reservations). I was very excited to have more of the darker shade of magic world (and in comic form!) - despite the fact that it focuses on Maxim Maresh, a character I didn‘t care one way or another about in the books... still, this is a pretty interesting start and I‘m loving that we get to know Isra more, as well as a pretty cool baddie. I‘ll probably speed through the other two volumes tonight. 😆

pickCouldn‘t resist squeezing in a comic tonight. I love Schwab‘s Shades of Magic series & was excited to see Schwab dive into the world of comics to explore additional storylines much as a Pierce Brown did with his Sons of Ares comics. So...before he was king (& father to Rhy), Maxim Maresh was a prince exiled by his father to the port of Verose where adventure ensued. This is a fun read for fans—an entertaining backstory supported by solid art.

pickI‘m so excited to have this graphic novel in my hands. The artwork is gorgeous, the writing fascinating and to read Maxim‘s story is a dream come true. I need all the things from the Shades of Magic world. V.E. Schwab is my favorite author and she writes pirates so well and Isra is a character I didn‘t know I needed much like Lila. I also loved the villain, she‘s so dramatic and horrid and I kind of love her for being her awful self.

pickThe art isn't spectacular but that didn't matter too much since I was just thrilled to return to Red London! This prequel follows the exploits of young Prince Maxim, long before he was king. This graphic novel starts slow but the series has tons of potential -- Schwab is an incredible storyteller so I trust her enough to pick up the next volume!

panI‘m so disappointed! I love the Shades of Magic series and I was excited to get a glimpse into Maxim‘s past but this was...not great, in my #unpopularopinion. The art inside is nothing like the cover, it‘s very dark and makes everything indistinct. I think I would have liked the storyline in prose form but I found this graphic novel hard to follow and ultimately just a setup for things to come rather than a narratively satisfying piece of story.

Made a little trip to Barnes and Noble for a graphic novel run tonight after delicious burgers.
pickThe backstory, characters, diversity, story line of this arc, art, and presentation are all awesome. But I gotta say, the graphic novel format for this series is not for me. 🤷🏻♀️ It‘s a pick because it‘s well done and adds to the Shades of Magic universe.

pickFlew through this! Even for a comic I went through it fast. I hadn't read anything about it at all so i thougt this was just going to be a companion/retelling to the original trilogy. But man! It's a prequel about the king! 😮 Can't wait for #2 to hot shelves
