From the coauthor of the New York Times bestselling Illuminae Files comes the first book in a new series that's part Romeo and Juliet, part Terminator, and all adrenaline. On an island junkyard beneath a sky that glows with radiation, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap. Seventeen-year-old Eve isn't looking for trouble--she's too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she spent months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, she's on the local gangster's wanted list, and the only thing keeping her grandpa alive is the money she just lost to the bookies. Worst of all, she's discovered she can somehow destroy machines with the power of her mind, and a bunch of puritanical fanatics are building a coffin her size because of it. If she's ever had a worse day, Eve can't remember it. The problem is, Eve has had a worse day--one that lingers in her nightmares and the cybernetic implant where her memories used to be. Her discovery of a handsome android named Ezekiel--called a "Lifelike" because they resemble humans--will bring her world crashing down and make her question whether her entire life is a lie. With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic sidekick Cricket in tow, Eve will trek across deserts of glass, battle unkillable bots, and infiltrate towering megacities to save the ones she loves...and learn the truth about the bloody secrets of her past.

This guy has become one of my favorites. His ability to make funny sassy relatable characters while making us feel every ounce of their pain is extraordinary. The ending of this book is very unique, I love the dark way that this ended and will continue onto the next book. Lemon is a fantastic character. Though I did see every twist coming (except one that had me really fooled) it was still an exhilarating read. Jay Kristoff shows no mercy.

jeannasser I NEVER saw coming that the ability to fry the machines was Lemon‘s, not Eve‘s. That was such a great twist and it had me completely fooled. But I knew that Eve was a lifelike from the very beginning. It was obvious since she never seemed to get hurt or anything and that would‘ve immediately revealed that she was a lifelike with a fast healing wound. 2mo

Jay Kristoff successfully uses fight scenes as a literary medium that carries the plot and emotional cords of the story.

I have to explain the photo first. @Reggie I opened up a drawer at my dads house and look what was staring up at me! 😳😳😳 I would say I was shocked, but honestly I have learnt to expect ANYTHING.
Anyway this book. It‘s YA Sci Fi and I‘d heard it was reminiscent of Cinder which I loved so I had to jump in. The world building was brilliant, wonderful robots, AI and tech. A couple of great characters (Lemon!), surprisingly not the protagonist, ⬇️

Centique then a romance that felt abysmally Insta, but an ending that completely redeemed the book for me. So a pick but you need to like YA sci fi / fantasy to start with I think. 3y

HeyT Lol that drawer find reminds me of when I was volunteering in the Library's History Room and the librarian was doing an audit and found these really creepy and racist (there was a script with them) puppets. 3y
Centique @rockpools I reckon! 😘 3y
Centique @HeyT that sounds so scary! Like properly evil puppets 😳😳😳 3y
ravenlee Story from a friend‘s husband: his mom thought he loved clowns as a kid. He did not. He had this one that she bought him that he kept hiding but mom kept finding it and putting it out in his room. He finally took it away somewhere to dispose of it. She thought he‘d lost it and would be distraught, so she replaced it. He came home and the clown he thought was gone for good was back! Talk about nightmare fuel. 3y
HeyT @Centique Yeah they were hand made and from like the 50s or 60s so that type of aesthetic. 3y
Centique @ravenlee oh my god. I would have had a heart attack! The bizarre thing is we had a different doll in our house that gave me nightmares. It was this 2 foot high handmade cloth doll with huge skirts. I used to imagine it was climbing the stairs to get me (and all the time this clown was somewhere in my parents room!) 3y
Reggie @ravenlee Lolol that poor guy. 3y
Reggie Oy, Paula!!! That is a little crazy. I wonder why he had it. Was it a toy from when you all were younger? My friend hates clowns and anytime I read about clown sightings I always send the article to her. And the book sounds good too! 3y
Centique @Reggie we definitely never played with it 😳 but my older sisters remember seeing it when they were little. He must have bought it in the fifties or sixties I think. I will ask him when we get out of lockdown! 3y

This book was a total action packed epic from start to finish. It is an Anastasia retelling which I completely wasn‘t expecting. The amount of subtle Anastasia references were so well worked in.

The world building was incredible and reminiscent of Mad Max in a way, which I was really into. The characters were fun, unique and not too angsty. So well written, I was sucked in and could vividly see everything coming to life.

This was epic!! Jay Kristoff is one of my all-time favorite authors and this book held true to that! I loved the characters, the plot, and all the exciting twists and turns. I thought the pacing was excellent and loved all the action. I especially loved all the different twists in this book and did not see that ending coming.... at all!

Shay1097 2. I am very excited to see the path Eve goes down because I think it's going to be a sad and scary one.... but also badass... because she is a badass! Also, our homegirl Lemon was so fun to read about and I'm hoping to see so much more of her in the next book because I feel like she's got some tricks up her sleeve we haven't seen yet. As well I like this type of dystopian, AI take over book, and I think this one was done especially well! 4y
Shay1097 3. I like how we didn't focus too long on the destruction of the world, that we just got to live it in. I also LOVE books that bring up moral questions, with no right or wrong answers, this book felt very Neal Shusterman in that way. Overall this was a great read and I'm excited to read the next one! 4y

I have been hearing great things about Kristoff‘s books for ages- so I was really excited to dive into listening to this first book in the series- not knowing what to expect. It‘s certainly an action-packed mashup of dystopian fiction, a dash of YA romance & fantasy & lots of robots and bullets! And I really didn‘t expect the historical foundation, either! I liked it a lot- though I wish there had been more character development. #AudioColoring

All the time I was reading the second section of this, I kept thinking something was really familiar: the names (Ana, Marie, Alex) & the execution flashbacks. It suddenly hit me that it was the Romanov assassination it reminded me of.

Anyway it was a good read, a mix of Mad Max, Robot Wars, & The Terminator, but I just felt there was something missing. A just missed the mark 3.5 (rounded up to 4)🌟

A fast-paced sci-fi dystopian blend of an Anastasia retelling & I, Robot. The setting is really fun & creepy at the same time--a bit of Thunderdome with unique and entertaining world-building. The characters are magnificent. Evil science corps, murderous robots, a gang of religious zealot vigilantes, some dangerous street gangs, & an apparently more than human bounty hunter..and that doesn't include the protagonists! I loved this book so hard.

Rating: ⭐️

Dnf at 48%. I just could not get into it. The writing was flat. It was a bit weird. There felt like something was missing from the plot and it felt one dimensional. The main character was annoying, yet boring. I did love Lemon though.

This book has excellent world building and a very realistic, futuristic feel. Some parts of it were overly sappy for a Sci Fi story, but it didn't get ridiculous. The characters are multidimensional and addictive. The book had an interesting ending and I'm curious to find out with the lifelikes do next. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5 stars Well this was slow to start for me but, wow, quite the ending! Interesting take on an apocalyptic story involving robots and androids. This had kind of a Mad Max feel to it too. The only thing I didn't like was all the slang that was overused. I'm looking forward to reading the next book though.

If you like punk science fiction, dystopia, etc, pick up this book. Then pick up the sequel, because you are probably going to want it. It‘s a wild ride. But an enjoyable one.
