Finally finished the October #foodandlit buddy read! (7 minutes left until November in my time zone😄)

This was a very different and unexpected story, I enjoyed Alaine's snarky remarks, mixed-medium diary/assignment reports and will definitely spend some time googling the food and dishes mentioned, Haitian cuisine sounds delicious!

3/5 ⭐️ I'm mixed on this one. I found Alaine to be immature, does that mean I'm getting old... Oh God. What it lacks in the storyline though, it makes up for in its vibrant descriptions of Haiti and it's culture.
#FoodandLit 🇭🇹

TheBookHippie I apparently have reached OLD AGE status, this annoyed me HOWEVER I also loved the descriptors of food and culture. I will NOT miss Alaine!! OY vey.... 2y

Hello #FoodandLit Buddy Readers! 🇭🇹

How are you liking the book so far? I'm halfway through and enjoying it! I like Alaine's sense of humor.
Do you like the style of the books with the diary entries, letters, and emails?

There is one thing that has bothered me that I'll put in the comments to avoid spoilers.

Catsandbooks Alaine has had so many incidents, situations, etc. Where she has gone overboard with her drama and it gets her into trouble. To me it shows that she has a lot of growing up to do. Do you think she's done those things to get the attention of her mother who hasn't really been there for her and has been so focused on her career? Also it seems like her mom has put her career first and Alaine has been an afterthought. Will her diagnosis change that? 2y
TheBookHippie I am struggling … hoping it‘s the COVID after affects…I agree with your immature statement. Driving me to not like the book. 2y

Lunakay @Catsandbooks I like this kind of very direct 1st person narrator, I liked it in general so far, love Alaine's humor and actually thought the whole pig cake incident was quite hilarious in a slapstick sort of way🤭 Starting with the Haiti part today! 2y

The final 3 books of #FoodandLit Buddy Reads for 2022!

This is a casual read-at-your-own-pace buddy read. Anyone is welcome to join! Please let me know if you would like to be tagged in the check-in posts.

How are we entering the last quarter of the year?!?!
Have you liked having buddy reads this year? Do you want #FoodandLit buddy reads to continue in 2023?

Sapphire I picked my books from my TBR before the buddy read titles were announced. 2y
Bookworm54 I haven‘t read many of the buddy reads this year, but I think they are nice to have. Especially if you are struggling to find a book for somewhere! 2y
AnneCecilie I‘ve liked the buddy reads even if I participated more at the beginning of the year. I have participated when I can get the book from the library or have it unread on my shelves. I loved the Durrell book and would never have found it on my own. (edited) 2y

TheBookHippie I am in for these last three because I have a lot of sitting in my future waiting on doctor appointments!! LOL. OY VEY!! I do like that you pick books for these even though I plan my own thing a lot of the time! ARE you doing this challenge next year as well?? 2y
Catsandbooks @TheBookHippie I hope your appointments go well! 💕 #FoodandLit will still continue but I'm trying to see how much interest there is in continuing the buddy reads. 2y
Lunakay @Catsandbooks Count me in for the November and December buddy reads as well! :) Thanks! 2y

A low pick for me & I agree with many of the other reviews. Alaine is a fantastic, funny, believable character. Suspended from school, she spends a month in #Haiti interning at her aunt‘s charity, getting to know her extended family & spending time with her Mum, who‘s taking a break from life in the public eye. I would happily have read more of Alaine- but the plot was more than necessary! I enjoyed learning more about Haiti & its history as well.

rockpools This was my attempt at #BBRC #TeenAngst #LatinoMainCharacterInANonissueBook . I‘m not entirely sure I met the brief! Latino MC? I *think* so geographically, possibly not by all definitions. I got confused. And I think you could argue it as a non-issue book (it‘s a fun read) and the issues it covered weren‘t expected or the norm. (Spoilers below). But they were issues! @LibrarianRyan @Sarahreadstoomuch Also bk 2 for #JoysOfJune readathon @Andrew65 4y

An enjoyable read but a bit too much going on. A few too many strands of plot made this a bit muddier than necessary. Alaine was a lively and believable 17-year-old main character. Good audiobook, with the always wonderful narrator Bahni Turpin and the lovely accents. Nice to read a story set in Haiti and learn a bit about the country.

Takes 100 pages to get to the big plot-defining moment in the novel, then another 70 pages to really get good. The book would have been better with less teen angst and getting to what drives the narrative sooner.

Can we just focus on the cover for a second?! So pretty!
I loved learning about the places Alaine visited or researched in Haiti. I had not once thought of ever visiting, but now I want to.
Solid story, and authors I would like to read again. 3.5⭐

Alaine was an incredible protagonist — mouthy, adventurous, vulnerable, & gutsy ✨. Her relationship with her family was wonderfully dynamic & full, especially her relationship with the women in her family, which was heartwarming. I wish I liked the plot as much as the characters — I feel like I lost my grip on it halfway through. And the romance was utterly unnecessary — & I say this as someone who usually adores romance side plots. ★★★☆☆.

Absolutely♥️this! A tale of human nature where nothing is quite what it seems. Alaine is a hilarious, snarky MC who must come to terms w/ complicated family dynamics & a life that will never be the same. Steeped in rich Haitian culture & history, family curses, a charity start-up, & commentary on sometimes problematic foreign aid, this was a most enjoyable reading experience. The Great Bahni Turpin narrated & I highly recommend the audio! 4.5⭐️s!

I love this idea because I think it will help me stay on a better reading schedule @Cinfhen! Here is my #WeeklyForecast. Starting the tagged book today. Still working through The Lost Queen, hope to start American Spy by mid-week, and gotta finish Dracula for #Scarathlon #TeamStoker #BuddyRead.

Cinfhen Nice!! 3 audios 🎧 I‘m starting Dracula later this week and I‘m thinking of listening to the audio too!!! I‘m a HUGE mood reader but I think a #WeeklyForecast is an easier commitment then a monthly TBR. Of course I already bailed on two audios and it‘s only Monday afternoon but I‘ll save that for my #bookreport 😜 5y
KT1432 @Cinfhen audios help me read so much more because I can do it at work! This is a much easier commitment for me, and should help me manage library holds better lol. They tend to come in all at once and many times I don't get to them all. I need to start suspending them! 5y

I LOVED this book. Alaine is an amazing character. I really enjoyed her personality, her passion, and her determination. The descriptions and the settings were just so amazing and i could see them so clearly in my head. Throw in some mysticism and curses? Yes, please. This was such an excellent read. I also loved finding out from the authors‘ note that it was written by two sisters.

AlaMich Fun fact: Alaine is my actual name. 😊 5y

I loved the premise of this book as well as the epistolary style of narrative. The Moulite sisters use letters, emails, diary entries, postcards, and articles to tell Alaine's story. There were parts that came across as particularly unorganized and subsequently they lose the plot in places. There are also too many tertiary characters and secondary characters that disappear (Alaine's father, her friend) and an unnecessary sort-of romance.

Start reading this yesterday and so far I love it! I‘‘ already half way through. Love the main character Alaine, she is hilarious. Love that this book dives so much into the history of Haiti as well. The pacing is great. And I‘m loving all of the different ways she is telling this story. Really enjoying it so far!

Alaina is a snarky teenager coming to terms with her mom‘s early onset Alzheimer‘s, dealing with being privileged in Miami/Haiti, & what that means; and her complicated feelings about voodoo and her family‘s history.

It felt a little clunky sometimes, but I think that was mostly bc of the formatting. It was honestly the worst digital arc I‘d ever seen. Whole sentences on the wrong page, and lots of fragments floating around. #howjessreadsin2019
