A good example of “be careful what you wish for.” Lucy and Owen decide to try an open marriage, for a limited amount of time, and with a set of ground rules. Of course, things don‘t go as planned. A quick, enjoyable read!

Ugh. This book. Married couple is discontent, decides to open their marriage for six months, no questions asked. Hey, whatever. No judgement. But they do it in such an idiotic way. There is zero discussion. Continued in the comments because this review is super long because I hated this.

Krisjericho And of course, the husband, who is one of the worst characters I have ever read, sleeps with two women - the psycho bitch, because women can‘t sleep with a man without become obsessed and texting him 90 times and destroying his property, and the 19-year old he judges as being a slut BECAUSE SHE SLEEPS WITH RANDOM PEOPLE. You know, LIKE HE DOES. 5y
Krisjericho And then the wife, who is okayish I guess, sleeps with her no strings attached guy and falls in love because women can‘t just sleep with men they find enjoyable, they will fall in love 100% of the time. 🙄 The plot has chapters about random side characters that don‘t matter, and everything is happily ever after in the end, because that makes sense. Blergh. 5y

Be careful what you wish for.....I did enjoy the book and had a really hard time putting the book down! It‘s a light tale with interesting characters that reveal darker truths about care required to maintain a marriage. This is a perfect beach read if you‘re looking for a light romance that outlines the struggles of a long term relationship and coming to terms with the fact that the grass isn‘t always greener on the other side.

Not a novel concept anymore, but the story seemed like it had potential to develop into something more interesting than it ended up being. The characters were mildly amusing at times, simply awful and not entirely thought through at others. The ending was anti climatic, I had to flip back and forth a few pages to confirm the ending, really.

Lucy and Owen think they‘re being #modernlove (ers) by opening up their marriage. Owen finds Izzy, someone seemingly easy who turns out to have boundary issues and Lucy becomes what starts out as a #daytripper to the city to be with Ben but she ends up breaking the rule of “no falling in love.” This was hilarious with plenty of deep issues underneath. #BeatleMaynia #MayMovieMagic

Reggie @crazyspine I use this little app called pic collage. I take the cover of the book off the internet. And in the app itself there is this option called Backgrounds where you can use a photo or search for something. I use search and often just type in colors that match the book cover. Like this one I just typed in teal and turquoise and it comes up with all kinds of that color combo and just chose this one. Hope that helps. 6y

One of my favorite books I‘ve read in 2019! I would reread it again in a heartbeat. It‘s about a married couple who try to have an open marriage for 6 months, following a set of rules, one of being “no falling in love”. The characters are well developed & take you on a 6 month journey about daily life, marriage struggles, raising children, partnership and love. Would highly recommend!

Lucy and Owen are in a tough place in their marriage. Their special needs son drains all the energy and joy from their home, so they decide to try an open marriage to see if they can find themselves again. What they find is surprising and also predictable. Enjoyable reading with good and funny characters and a good ending.
(Photo is from my trip to Oahu last month. Nothing to do with the book but I love the colors of the ocean.)

Well drawn characters and the difficulties of marriage. Also, sharp observations about people living in a town filled with privilege. I did get confused with some of the towns people and one of the threads wasn‘t necessary, mostly bc it tied part of the ending too neatly. But overall, there should be a lot to discuss.

One third in and so far has no redeeming value, for me. I expected some spicy details...nope, not yet anyway. If anyone sees reason why I should continue on with this book, speak now or forever hold your peace. 🤭

Reggie I loved this book. And for the most part those spicy details never come because what should have been spicy turns crazypants. Maybe it‘s just not for you but it has its merits. 6y

2.7/5 Stars - I started this last year, sat it aside, and picked it back up this month. Parts were funny, while others were difficult and frustrating. Lucy and Owen have been married awhile and have a special needs son. Intrigued by another couple‘s success with an arrangement, they decide to embark on six month marriage vacation of sorts, in which both parties are allowed to sleep with other people. Overall the book was just okay. #jpbookreview

You might have to be married with kids to truly appreciate this book. Lucy and Owen have a suburban life with an autistic child and it‘s drained the romance from their marriage. They agree to a 6 month “arrangement” - an open marriage. Total freedom to explore physical relationships with other people. The aftermath and insight is definitely thought-provoking. Starts fascinating, fizzles a little but stays strong - a great metaphor for marriage.

Unfortunately clichés, erroneous plot lines, & befuddled characters distract from a juicy arrangement Lucy & Owen have to step out of their marriage for sex for 6 months.

Redeeming qualities:
- Sunny Bang (despite an explanation of how she's one of 3 Asian-American women and most men in town get them mixed up)
-Lucy standing up for herself as a stay-at-home mom when Owen wondered aloud why she didn‘t apply lipstick before he came home ????

Reggie I liked this one. I really liked the letter from Owen‘s crazy side chick saying what they had was more than anybody gets which is enough. 7y
mrozzz @Reggie I just didn‘t buy it 😣 despite so many breakups it all just felt too neat. And like it was trying to mimic the dark, humorous chaos of Bernadette but it didn‘t make a sense. I couldn‘t get a good read of who Lucy was. And I was incredibly disappointed with Owen. I felt like I was teetering the whole way through between liking it and not. 7y
Reggie @mrozzz really? Cause I got under-appreciated wife/mother. Dealing with an extreme child situation where she has to wrestle with him to get the knife away from him. That‘s a lot of stress, for both of them. Maybe, they just needed an outlet. ( I‘m not advocating for this one, lol) And I‘m with you, because if my husband left in the middle of the night to go hold the sidepeice, he either would know not to come back or know I won‘t be there. 7y
See All 6 Comments
mrozzz @Reggie what I liked best was the realness of being a mother. The ending didn‘t give me enough resolution. What Ben said was enough to completely push down her feelings with him and work it out with Owen? She did it for Wyatt? I might have liked it better if she went ahead and screwed it all up in pursuit of selfishness to be with Ben. Or more Victoria! And definitely more Sunny! I concur concerning husbands trying to prioritize the girlfriend 🤬 7y

Here's another book that tried to tempt me at the bookstore. #awesomeautumnbooks #shhsecrets
What happens when you realize your "perfect" marriage is a bit too comfortable & your friend is having a successful open relationship? Why not try a short marital experiment? Six months, clear ground rules, zero questions asked. But what happens when the affair begins to seem more enticing than the happily-ever-after you've known for the past 9 years?

Beckys_Books It's highly unlikely I could read this book and finish it. I like happily ever after with no bumps along the way. 7y

A fast read. Better than I thought it would be. Premise is a bit ridiculous, but I'm glad that the author didn't tie everything up with a bow at the end. People get hurt in this novel, relationships break up. There are real-world consequences to an open marriage that go beyond a fictional story. I'm glad that the author didn't make this arrangement play out like a walk in the park. #bookstagram #bookreview #booklife

Suet624 I smelled my mother's perfume in the air on and off at random times for about 6 months. I'd have to sit down because I'd be shaking so much. I didn't have much of a relationship with her while she was alive. Now we are friends. It's a relief. Before you sleep ask that you be given some pleasant dreams about her. Sometimes that helps. 7y
LauraBeth Thanks @Suet624 - we had a difficult relationship since she was an alcoholic my entire life but now I realize that she was self-medicating herself because of her severe depression. I never thought she liked me much but after going thru what she left behind - it became clear that she adored me and was proud of me - her depression stole her ability to connect fully with me - but now I see that she wanted to - she just didn't know how 💔 7y
Suet624 I discovered the same thing, but it happened during a thunderbolt moment just a few minutes before she died. It's a good thing to discover. Grieving for that fact alone - that you are only now discovering how much you were loved - can take months. Be gentle with yourself and cry as much as necessary. It won't go on forever, so just allow it. Much love to you. 🌹💕 7y

A quick fun read that reminded me of a soap opera. The ending could've been a smidge more developed but whatevs.

Reggie I liked that everything wasn't left destroyed. I also liked crazy Izzy's letter at the end when she said they were luckier than a lot of people cause they had more than most.... which was enough. I loved this book. 7y
BookishTrish @Reggie I really liked Izzy's letter too. I felt a bit like the relationship with Ben dissolved quickly because it's what the plot demanded vs. how the characters might actually behave. 7y
Reggie I get that cause the dissolve happens over a couple of pages, but in actuality took a couple of months, but she had her son to think about and I don't think she took all those death threats from Wyatt and played the part of least favorite parent to just leave him for a new life with a new guy. 7y

What a deliciously fun read! I gobbled up this novel about a couple who decides to open up their marriage. It's funny, sexy, and has hints of a Tom Perrotta novel. It would be an excellent beach read or reading slump buster. Thanks to @MicheleinPhilly and @Reggie for the recommendation!

Ashley_Nicoletto Loved this one too! 7y
nomadreader I have this one waiting on audio for a road trip later this week. So excited! 7y
SilversReviews Gorgeous cover. 7y

This book is more Mr Right Now than Mr Right.... and I'm okay with that.

I'm way behind on #thesatanicversesbuddyread but I started reading the tagged book after reading reviews by @MicheleinPhilly and @Reggie and I'm hooked and don't want to stop. #blameitonlitsy

MicheleinPhilly 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼That book busted me out of a 2 week reading slump! 7y
rachellayown I can see why @MicheleinPhilly! I felt a reading slump creeping up on me and this book has knocked down that threat. 7y
Lola I just listened to the Just the Right Book podcast episode where Roxanne Coady interviews the author of this one. If the link doesn't work, its episode 27 http://www.bookpodcast.com/469-2/ 7y

Reggie Yayyy, I hope you love it. Owen's side chick is a little crazy. And I don't know if I could live in that town. Lol 7y
