The Favorite Sister | Jessica Knoll
From Jessica Knollauthor of Luckiest Girl Alive, the instant New York Times bestseller and the bestselling debut novel of 2015comes a blisteringly paced thriller starring competitive sisters whose dark secrets and lies result in murder when they sign onto a reality TV show. When five hyper-successful women agree to appear on a reality series set in New York City called Goal Diggers, the producers never expect the season will end in murder Bretts the fan favorite. Tattooed and only twenty-seven, the meteoric success of her spin studioand her recent engagement to her girlfriendhas made her the object of jealousy and vitriol from her castmates. Kelly, Bretts older sister and business partner, is the most recent recruit, dismissed as a hanger-on by veteran cast. The golden child growing up, she defers to Brett nowa role which requires her to protect their shocking secret. Stephanie, the first black cast member and the oldest, is a successful bestselling author of erotic novels. There have long been whispers about her hot, non-working actor-husband and his wandering eye, but this season the focus is on the rift that has opened between her and Brett, former best friendsand resentment soon breeds contempt. Lauren, the start-up worlds darling whose drinking has gotten out of control, is Goal Diggers recovery narrativeeveryone loves a comeback story. And Jen, made rich and famous through her cultishly popular vegan food line plays a holistic hippie for the cameras, but is perhaps the most ruthless of them all when the cameras are off. The Favorite Sister explores the invisible barriers that prevent women from rising up the ranks in todays Americaand offers a scathing take on the oft-lionized bonds of sisterhood, and the relentless pressure to stay young, relevant, and salable.

“The thinking that women of all shapes and sizes can be beautiful is still hugely problematic, because it is predicated on the idea that the most important thing a woman has to offer the world is her appearance. Men are raised to worry about their legacies, not their upper arm and thigh fat, stretch marks, crows-feet, saggy elbows, ugly armpits, thin eyelashes, and normal-smelling genitals.”

Just terrible. It had an interesting premise, but I must have had an early edition because there were so many typos and a letter from the publisher in it. Also, I would have bailed but like the subject matter it was hard to not find out what happened, so I thought I‘d switch to the audiobook which was an improvement...but the damage might‘ve been done for me.
I‘ll end up donating but this is what I initially thought to do.

I started this book and was a little disappointed- it moved slow and rarely captured my attention. But for some reason, I kept reading, and boy am I glad I did. The plot twists kept coming, and on several occasions I gasped loudly because certain truthful items came to light. I think the conversation about society pitting women against each other is an important one to have, and this book demonstrates how even the “helpful” practices are harmful

This made for okay plane reading but I don‘t think it‘s really worth picking up, it didn‘t work for me. The cast of characters was too complicated, for one. I kept having to flip back and forth to figure out who people were early on and still never really managed to keep Lauren and Jen straight. But what really irked me was how the book ended for Stephanie. It felt like a bad stereotype.

Cinfhen I panned it too!! Such a disappointment ☹️ 5y

I enjoyed this book for it's clever, punchy, sharp writing. It was thought provoking and delved into difficult women's issues. But there were times when I wanted to throw it across the room. The writing was so distracting and complicated to the point of confusion. The characters were horrible human beings and the entire plot summarized everything I dislike about reality TV: manipulative, hateful and hurtful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #reviewathon #netgalley

I do not bail on books often but wow this book is just not something I could get into. I really tried but it felt like there wasn‘t really a plot going on, it was more just characters rambling about nonsense. I think that she was trying to have us get to know the characters but dang! I just couldn‘t stick with it anymore.

Very twisty! You'd think this many characters who were lying/hiding things from each other would invest in lock screens for their phones, but plot contrivance pet peeves aside I enjoyed the ride on this one. There's not really anyone to like by the end so if you're not into that this isn't the book for you. I was happy to read a thriller that was actually focused on five women, with nary a sketchy boyfriend or abusive ex-husband in site.

Reagan I do agree that it was nice to have a book that was very female-centric.
6y
akckitty I really enjoyed Jessica Knolls first novel. I don't feel like I was disappointed by this one either :) 6y
WhatWouldJaneDo @Reagan-reads yes, I was thinking about it more after writing my post and I could only think of two named male characters (other than people mentioned in flashbacks) and I don't think they ever talked to each other. It was a nice reverse of the norm. 6y
WhatWouldJaneDo @akckitty I haven't read her first book yet but I want to! I enjoyed this one and I've heard other people say they liked the first one best so it sounds worth checking out. She will probably be on my radar for future releases. 6y

Well, this is about a group of women on a reality show about young, successful, independent women. It takes place over a season of filming, and of course there is all manner of backstabbing and betrayal, but it just was the longest read ever. I should have bailed. It was way too convoluted, with a whole bunch of very unlikable characters. Yeah, not for me, I‘ll probably skip her next release.

I really wanted to like this book but ultimately I thought it was NOT GOOD. this novel is based in some feminist concepts which really had potential. Unfortunately, it was just executed poorly. The plot is SLOW and it was super complicated to get all the characters organised in my head at the beginning, nothing really starts to unfold into 330 pages into a 370 page novel, and much of what comes before that is unnecessarily complex.

Alternating cooking and reading tonight. I‘m prioritizing my reading (and thus, my self care) this year, so that means sneaking in books whenever I can. Reading matters to me and makes me a better, calmer person. So I get my pages in, while I‘m waiting for my jambalaya to boil or for my rice to cook or while I stir. More prioritizing what matters in 2019!

Ok, so here‘s the ☕️— I adore this author. Her first book was easily my most fave thing I‘ve read in a long while, I was so excited for this one and it didn‘t disappoint. If you like backstabbing, suppppper unreliable narrators, and general caustic wit & sarcasm, Jessica Knoll has characters for you. Think Big Little Lies (a lot of ppl claim books are like this, I know but trust) set on a Housewives-Esque reality show. 💋☕️

This book has a lot of #truth in it. As a #childlessbychoice woman, I have had a lot of friends try to justify/validate their decision to have kids to me. I‘m all, “whatever, do your thing.” I have found there‘s very little validation for childless women, at least in the South.

Skeebies05 “Oh but you‘d be a great mom” 🙄🙄 I get that one a lot. 6y
Charysselya Yes! Also child free by choice :)! 6y
Megabooks @Skeebies05 Yes 🤬🙄🙄 6y

Megabooks @Indiefishsteak Ah yes it‘s child free not childless. I always get it wrong. Whoops! 😬😬 6y
TsundokuAleax It is the same up north. It tends to be more of people you know but I am lucky that I don't run into it as often as I did a few years ago. I have friends who deal with all sorts of terrible things said to them. 6y
Lreads I am also child free by choice. People have made wrong assumptions about me such as I must hate kids or I must be selfish. I‘ve also been made to feel like an outsider because of my choice. 6y
mrsh62010 This is me, one more person validating your child free by choice decision 6y
ericas If you want to cheer up immediately ask a teenager mother what's like to have children :-) The important for me is to be free to choose and never regret the choice whatever it is. 6y
cherinium My child free status was not by choice in the beginning. However, I read this book and came out on the other side feeling as if I had dodged a bullet. 6y
Zelma Mr. Z and I are oddballs here in south Louisiana in choosing not to have kids. People just can‘t wrap their minds around it. The toughest part lately is having less of a social circle and some friends cutting us off because we don‘t fit into their parent lifestyle. It‘s noticeable when friends post their mom group posts online. 🙄😟 6y
Megabooks Has anyone else been relegated to lunch with childed friends? Nights are for family; weekends are for friends with kids. I need a frequent diner card at Panera and Mellow Mushroom. I wish we lived near each other! @Skeebies05 @Indiefishsteak @TsundokuAleax @QuietlyLaura @mrsh62010 @ericas @cherinium @Zelma 6y
Megabooks @ericas I am strangely obsessed with Unexpected on TLC and Teen Mom OG on MTV (now with Bristol Palin 😮😜) 6y
TsundokuAleax @Megabooks I totally get that one. I have a lot of friends who are difficult to see unless they can bring the kids. Or they act like I am terrible if I want to hang out away from the family. But the good part is that those are few and far between.Thankfully I have a number of friends who are child free. 6y
Megabooks @TsundokuAleax yeah, since I‘m not working now, a lot of friends with children want to meet while their kids are in school - lunch, afternoon walks or coffee. Unfortunately, I just moved and all the people I already knew had kids, so I‘m working on the child free friends. Any suggestions on how to meet some? 6y
Zelma @Megabooks Bristol Palin is on Teen Mom? Wow, I am not surprised at all. 🙄😬 6y
Zelma @Megabooks @TsundokuAleax I‘ve had a slightly different experience. I tried to stay friends with everyone I knew with kids, working around their schedules in weird, inconvenient ways. End result has been most of our acquaintances drifting away from us as we have less in common or don‘t fit it their parent groups. The families we‘re still close to make it work and we do dinner/game nights, albeit usually at their house when the kids go to to bed! 6y
Megabooks @Zelma That‘s another difference is that I don‘t have a spouse/partner, so that‘s made it extra difficult to stay friends with couples. People really don‘t know where to stick you when you have no spouse or kid! 6y
Zelma @Megabooks I imagine that‘s even tougher. I‘m lucky in that I have a lot of child free friends (single and couples) and that was also the case when I was single. I definitely cultivate those relationships when I find them, but it is challenging not to fit into society‘s narrow classifications. I also seek friendships with people who have adult children. 6y
Lreads @Zelma @Megabooks It is nice to find others who understand that we aren‘t bad people because we chose to be child free. It‘s also hard to find people who read! At least there is Litsy! ☺️ 6y
TsundokuAleax @Megabooks Honestly the single part is harder than the child free. People have stopped inviting me places or trying to hang out because...reasons. There are never any mentioned or given, it just slowly happens. That is probably the hardest part. And I will say it is different as a female than it is for males. I know single guys who still hang out with those people no problem. 6y
Megabooks @Zelma yes, society so promotes like with like. I‘m finally getting to the age that someone with an adult child would see me as a peer. (38) Again, going far outside my age range is more difficult since I just moved back to my hometown and everyone still sees me as high school Meg. Although strangely I‘ve made friends with my mom‘s friends (67-80) and sub in her bridge group. 6y
Megabooks @TsundokuAleax I really think they think you‘re going to steal their husband/partner. But most of my married girlfriends I have to find time to hang out with alone. 6y
Megabooks @QuietlyLaura @Zelma 🥂 cheers 🥂 to people who understand (and good books) 6y
TsundokuAleax @Megabooks Yeah, I had to explain this the guy who still hangs with everyone. He was baffled by it completely. The funny part is that I identify as demi so their partners are in no danger from me. 6y
Megabooks @TsundokuAleax I‘m gray-a, so similar here. I haven‘t been in a relationship in over 10 years. 6y
TsundokuAleax @Megabooks Ah, the joys of not fitting the narrative. 6y

This novel is a bit different than Knoll's debut, but still focuses on complex women having moments of being likable and unlikable moments. It is a psychological thriller and falls into the unreliable narrator because the characters are millennial women who are on a reality tv show that is suppose to show empowered women, but succumbs to typical reality tv drama with including finding out who killed one of the women vs how it‘s portrayed for tv.

It‘s a dangerous thing to conflate feminism with liking all women. It limits women to being one thing, likable, when feminism is about allowing women to be all shades of all things, even if that thing is a snake oil saleswoman.
