Harper Lee carefully weaves two story lines together - Boo Radley (a neighborhood recluse) and Tom Robinson (a black man on trial) - to bring to life the major theme of empathy and how important it is to stand in another person's shoes. Through the innocent eyes of Scout, the reader discovers what happens throughout the trial and its impact on Maycomb County. If you like books like The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, pick up this classic novel!
Surprised I had never read this. Wanted to read it before I read her second one. What a great story. I can see why it has lasted. So many home truths that are universal. I think I got an inkling into what Harper herself was like. I also believe Dill was based on her lifelong friend Truman Capote. I‘ll keep this and read it again.
The book begins with the reader meeting Scout who is telling the story from her point of view which is first person. We meet her brother, Jem, her father, Atticus and her cook, Calpurnia. Scout and Jem are very interested with the Radleys, their neighbors and wish to discover more. We also find out that Atticus, a lawyer, will be defending a black man in court. This book would be a good choice for fans of racial injustice and social justice.
βAutumn again, and Boo's children needed him.β

I couldn't decide if the challenge was classic 'you' (reed) or classic you (red), but I think this fits both options.

He turned out the light and went into Jem‘s room. He would be there all night, and he would be there when Jem waked up in the morning.

Embarrassed to say I have never read this Pulitizer Priize winner, just started and already having trouble putting it down to get on with my day.

I have read this book several times and it never ceases in its ability to amaze me⦠so poignant and powerful. It is just as important and relevant today as when it was first released!
βYou never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.β
Since this book is historical fiction there are many things that are different from then and now. Back then black and white people did not go to the same school, shop at the same grocery store, or use the same bathrooms. We can teach our children about the different cultures and races of people. Especially since nowadays there are more families immigrating into the U.S. We can teach our children about the past but teach ways to better the future.
This is a historical fiction book. This story takes place during the 1930s. During this time in history black and white people did not share the same restroom let alone live together. Times were quite different, especially how people lived and how people treated each other. During this time the Civil Rights action was starting to take place. Black people were starting to stand up for themselves and want more freedom and privileges as white people.
After years of having it on my tbr-pile I finally read this. It was beautiful and sad and still so accurate in today‘s time. That really got me.
A reread for me. First read for my daughter. She enjoyed it too.

I have read and reread this one and it never loses its magic. This most recent reread was inspired by our brand new pup that we named Scout. It was Atticus and Calpurnia that stuck out to me this time, my first reading it after becoming a parent. It‘s an impossible task, raising a child. The impact those two have on the story and Scout and Jem can‘t be measured. I know I‘ll reread this one again in every new season of life.
Few things in life are better than re-reading a beloved book. I‘m shocked at how much I did not take in the first times I‘ve read this book. I am very impressed with the ease with which it is narrated through the eyes of little Scout. A fine novel indeed.
I thought my cat Watney had followed my husband upstairs - then turned and found him apparently reading over the shoulder of the cat on my couch pillow! π

#CourtroomSetting #BookBinge @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Why is it that with all the dozens and dozens of books I can think of I‘ve read where people should have been in court, have been in court, are in jailβ¦ this is the only one I can think of with an actual courtroom scene? You see court on TV all the time! Is it in some way visually interesting that‘s boring to write about, or am I just watching a different kind of media than I‘m readingβ¦π€
This beauty was named Harper before she became my fur baby/service dog/constant companion/shadow. I started calling her Harper Lee a few days after that. I figure, if I‘m going to use the name, I should probably at least reread this book and read Go Set A Watchman. πβπ¦Ίπ

We listened to 99% of this in the car, and I just finished the last two pages in a physical copy we had at home. Due to covid weirdness my son never got to read this in school, and I was glad to have the honor of introducing it to him.
