I've had barely any reading time this month with insane work deadlines, but the TBR continues to grow...Hoping to dive into at least one of these this weekend.
pickI wouldn't say this is a favourite of mine. I think mostly because I didn't particularly engage with the characters.
However, the nature writing/scene setting is beautiful. The rural coming-of -age back story is moving and captures the post-war era perfectly.
pickFinished earlier today! Margaret Atwood is my fave author, and this one did not disappoint! It was so psychologically complex and tense. It was well-written; each line was so eloquent. The book was thought-provoking and will remain with me. I can do much psychoanalysis of it. Such an accurate, intense portrayal of mental illness and overall psychological deterioration. Looking forward to the next Atwood book I get from the library!
so-so3/22 I used #booked2022 as the push I needed to finally read an Atwood but I‘m sad to say this book won‘t push me to pick up another. Although some of the writing is truly masterful, so much so that towards the beginning I almost forgot it wasn‘t a memoir a couple of times, I didn‘t enjoy it and I didn‘t enjoy spending time with the characters. I could see where I was meant to go but I didn‘t enjoy the journey #ecofeministnovel
Audiocooking the Sunday roast today. I‘m about half of the way through this book now. Parts of it remind me of A-level Kantian ethics, parts of it have me a little intrigued, but at the moment a lot of it is leaving me cold. I think I expected something different . #Booked2022 #ecofemenistnovel

I started rearranging my books today, slowly, first by: fiction, author‘s last name starts with A. Here‘s Abbey through Atwood done! My problem is the constraints of home bookshelves, and the mix of hard backs and paperbacks. How do you shelve your books? Separate paperbacks from hardbacks and then alphabetize? I only want to do this once. 😂

I often recommend Surfacing by Margaret Atwood. Her other books may be more popular, but this is one of my favorites. It‘s a short book set in the Quebec outdoors.
pickThis story is under my skin. I️ love Atwood‘s writing.
Atmospheric. I went to the wilderness part of Canada over the summer and it‘s captured perfectly in her writing.
panA woman and her friends go to look for the woman's missing father at his lake cabin in Canada. You get the feeling pretty quickly, that there are some deeper issues, but, unfortunately, I just weren't interested. The MC is just too distanced, and too #comfortablynumb regarding sexism. The writing felt pretentious and too "literary", although there were some beautiful sentences at times. All in all, it added up to a disappointment.

This Atwood (still TBR) features a daughter going #IntotheWild of northern Quebec to find her missing father. It's one of the few Atwood novels that I haven't read, and I'm sure it won't disappoint.

This book has quite the #unreliable narrator, I had no idea what was true. #maybookflowers
This is my pick for #unreliablenarrators for #maybookflowers. The unnamed narrator is also the chief protagonist. We hear and see things from her point of view, including current events and memories of the past. It's a little confusing and totally unreliable. I hated this book and the narrator, but couldn't help admire Atwood's talent. Well worth a read.

so-soCan I just say that I am SO glad I read most of Atwoods newer works first, as if this was my first foray into her writing...well I probably wouldn't have stuck it out beyond this. It's by no means a terrible read, but when you compare it to The handmaids tale or The blind assassin, it doesn't fare particularly well! I believe this was written in the '70s, and she just improved on so many levels!
Starting this baby tonight! Unfortunately my last read - solar bones by Mike McCormack isn't on Litsy, but if you get a chance, BUY IT! But do NOT read the blurb, go into it blind. Beautiful experimental prose, set in Ireland during the recession. I cannot recommend it enough.
so-soI first read Surfacing in '94 part of a Post-War CanLit class. Trying to fill my 'Reread' square in #bookbingonw2016, I wanted to see if I love old Margaret Atwood as much as I love her current work.
One could say the novel is cryptic, but perhaps it's full of symbols waiting to be decoded. Narrative transitions into a dream world populated by the character's personal mythology. To further complicate things, Atwood eschews conventional grammar.
This, above all, to refuse to be a victim. Unless I can do that I can do nothing.
