The Golden Tresses of the Dead
The Golden Tresses of the Dead: A Flavia de Luce Novel | Alan Bradley
93 posts | 86 read | 37 to read
A finger in a wedding cake is only the beginning in this deliciously shocking mystery featuring Flavia de Luce, "the world's greatest adolescent British chemist/busybody/sleuth" (The Seattle Times). Flavia de Luce, the twelve-year-old chemist and amateur detective "with better than an average brain," is eager to turn professional. She and her father's valet, Dogger, have founded a detective agency, Arthur Dogger & Associates, and unexpectedly cut into their first case during the revelry at her sister Ophelia's wedding reception. After an eventful ceremony with a missing best man and spontaneous ventriloquist act, spirits are high as Feely and her new husband head for the towering and beautifully iced wedding cake. But as Feely slices into the first piece, a scream rings out--the bridal cake contains a severed human finger. Delighted, Flavia wraps the finger in a napkin and whisks it away to her chemical laboratory. By studying the embalmed skin, the indentation of a ring, and the slope of the fingernail, she'll not only be able to determine the identity of the victim--but also point a finger at a killer.

I finished both of these this week and thought they looked so pretty together. I reread AoA for #kindredspiritsbuddyread. I had been saving what I thought was the last Flavia de Luce book and then discovered yesterday that another one comes out next month! 🩷 I enjoyed this one and Dogger's increased role.

lauraisntwilder Forgot to mention, Flavia was my #bookspin for August. 3mo

I listened to the audio for this. I love Jayne as Flavia, but it‘s more the characterization that I love. Like many other audios, it doesn‘t keep my attention, so I did miss much of the story. The mysteries do not seem to be front and centre in any of the books in the series. I‘d like to rate it higher, but I think I just missed too much of what was going on to do so.

Thoroughly enjoyed this Flavia de Luce mystery: Dogger and Flavia have set up their own investigation business so of course they stumble over a body . This is apparently the last in the series- I hope that‘s not true.

Goodbye, Flavia! I so enjoyed my reread of this series - and delighted in listening to most of them with Jane Entwistle. The end of this isn‘t a really good wrap up for me, which leads me to hope we may see Flavia again one day.

AvidReader25 I was surprised it wasn‘t a better wrap up too! I hope that means we get more. 4y
janeycanuck @AvidReader25 I‘ve seen interviews where he has said he‘s already written more than planned and others where he says Flavia would be insulted if we thought she was never coming back so.... 🤷‍♀️ 4y
AvidReader25 @janeycanuck Ha, well I guess that keeps the door open. 4y

Question 4!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies I wish there was more of a wrap up in terms of the family situation but I understand why the author left it as such. I was generally happy with the general wrap up and the general ending of the book. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies I like that he left it open to write more if he wanted. And I liked that all the de Luce sisters had new things in their lives, it showed that life would go on for them after their father‘s passing. 4y
Smarkies @janeycanuck I do hope he writes a little more. I would be interested to see how Daphne progresses. 4y

Question 3!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies The rest of the village seems to be puttering on as usual... I think as with all small villages, changes will happen over time but slowly. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies there were definitely big changes at Buckshaw throughout the course of the series. But you‘re right about the rest of the village. Aside from all the dead and/or arrested inhabitants 🤪 4y
Smarkies @janeycanuck LOL. You are right.... There are alot of criminals in that small village. 😂😂😂 4y

Question 2!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies As with all Flavia mysteries.... I have no clue. 😂🤷🤷😂 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies haha! So I think the missionaries killed Mrs Prill. Beyond that... I think maybe Miss Truelove got roped in against her will but then went along with things. I‘ve got nothing on the missionaries, though. 4y

Question 1!

#flaviabuddyread

Smarkies I really liked the partnership. Dogger really does let Flavia go off and do her own thing so it was a good balance of working together and working separately. Plus there was someone sympathetic to help her along. 4y
janeycanuck @Smarkies I liked it, too. The relationship between Flavia and Dogger is my favourite in the entire series, it was so nice to see the partnership! 4y

A wedding might not be that much fun for a 12-year-old. That is, of course, unless your name is Flavia de Luce and someone finds a human finger in the wedding cake. Not to worry — a brilliant chemist and her pal Dogger are on the case.

Foragingfantasy I love these books so much! 4y
suvata @Foragingfantasy Me too but I think the series might have ended. I hope not because I would love to read more. 4y
Foragingfantasy @suvata I know! I‘d read more too. Enola Holmes on Netflix reminds me of Flavia. 4y

As always, I enjoy revisiting precocious Flavia deLuce. Though the mystery was just so-so in this one, I loved the evolving relationship between Flavia and Dogger — a perfect mix of formality and affection. Is this really the end of the series? The ending made it sound like it could go either way.

I‘ve been putting off reading this because I didn‘t want to be at the end of the series. And now I‘m conflicted because this doesn‘t feel like an ending - great story, as always, and I love that Flavia is starting to mature and grow up but... I dunno. Felt like a let down as a series finale.

First book finished for #24b42020

emz711 Is it the last one!? Was that official? I wasn't sure and it didn't seem like an ending either! 5y
janeycanuck It‘s the end for now, at least. He‘s said he may pick the series back up one day but turning out a book a year has been too much for him. I‘ve just started a buddy read for the series - book 1 was yesterday. You should consider joining us! (edited) 5y

DH bought this for me for Chanumas—the tenth (and possibly the last) Flavia de Luce. I'm really happy to have the complete set (to date, at least)! While the series is still enjoyable, I think Bradley is running out of steam. Or, maybe it's just that DH gave me his horrid cold/fever for Christmas—I may be having trouble concentrating/enjoying anything. Ugh! [Number Two Son gave me the other pictured book (Steal Like an Artist).]

I finished this book last week. It was thoroughly enjoyable as all the Flavia books have been. I would hate to see it end here. Flavia is growing up so wonderfully. I would really like to know what happens to her next. I sure wish Flavia had been around when I was growing up. I'm sad to have reached the end of published titles for this series, but happy to tick off another completed (for now) series.

Bittersweet (possible) end to the series! I‘ve listened to most of these in audio format, so as I read this one I kept hearing Flavia, Dogger, and Mrs. Mullet‘s voices in my head 🙃

A bit of a convoluted mystery, but beautiful interactions between Flavia and those whom she loves. She‘s growing up!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

emz711 Waaahhh? I don't think it will be. Will it be the end? 5y
thea-block I know, right? Supposedly Bradley is taking a break, as he was originally contracted for a 10 book series, and he‘s 80 years old! But he hasn‘t necessarily said one way or another that he‘s done with Flavia... we will see! 5y

Flavia in all her glory.

When Flavia‘s sister finds a severed finger in her wedding cake it is Flavia who comes to the rescue. This book also has the most surprising set of villains.

This book is a delicious confection - unlike the aforementioned wedding cake!

Flavia is growing up. She and Dogger have gone into business together as detectives and their first case involves a finger found in her sister‘s wedding cake. As usual, the quirky characters of Bishops Lacey play a big part in the mystery. Alan Bradley has written another fun whodunit.

Ah, Flavia, how I love her. She and Dogger are back at it, when a finger is found in Ophelia‘s wedding cake!! This one has some darker undertones as Flavia deals with the losses from previous books and the “loss” of her sister and their complicated relationship, but it still has the humor you expect from this series. This was my book featuring and amateur detective for #popsugarreadingchallenge

Just finished this audiobook. I heard a rumour that this might be the last Flavia book!?! I can't bear to think there won't be any further hijinks with Flavia and Dogger and Bishops Lacey! I so think I prefer reading these books on my own to the audiobook versions - not quite sure why - but this was still an enjoyable romp through Flavia's world!

janeycanuck I heard an interview with him on a podcast - it was originally planned to be an 8 book series but he expanded it out to 10. So yep - I think it‘ll be the last one 😢 6y

I have mixed feelings on this tenth book of the Flavia de Luce series. While I always enjoy revisiting the quaint English town of Bishop‘s Lacey and spending time with the inquisitive Flavia, I felt this installment was all over the place at times and the resolution of the mystery left me with more questions. I‘ll read these books though as long as he continues to write them as they‘re still entertaining anyway.

I will never get tired of Flavia de Luce & Dogger. This 10th addition to the series begins with the wedding of her sister. I adore the audio of these books. As always with this series, the plot matters less to me than the interaction between the main characters. I've heard this is the final book in the series & I hope that's not true.
