The Maze Runner
The Maze Runner | James Dashner
When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he's not alone. He's surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade - a walled encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible stone maze. Like Thomas, the Gladers don't know why or how they came to be there - or what's happened to the world outside. All they know is that every morning when the walls slide back, they will risk everything - even the Grievers, half-machine, half-animal horror that patrol its corridors, to try and find out.

Bailedbailed

Entering a book slump after reading The Hunger Games prompted me to try another YA dystopian universe. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed (the book slump continues). Dashner's series lacks any real substance. There are no existential questions to ponder. No political meat. No political statement. No quest for morality. Which left the novel two-dimensional. The slang made the dialogue feel stilted and immature. (1/3).

TheIntrovertedDodoBird The characters were irksome and soulless. The randomly gifted protagonist felt cliched. Dashner's writing is a prime example of telling the reader instead of showing, which made the prose insipid. The description of the "strong female lead" was better suited to a Disney film, with her Snow White features. The quote - a pretty, feminine voice that sounded as if it came from a fairy goddess trapped in his skull - made me DNF. (2/3) 5mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird The queer-baiting aspect of the series irked me, as well, with Dashner announcing some of the characters were LGBTQ+ after the series ended. Then, there are the patriarchal undertones in the book that cemented the misogynistic portrayal of the female lead, in my opinion. It's frustrating since I made the mistake of purchasing the box set. (3/3). 5mo
Bookwormjillk Oh bummer on the box set. Have you read Divergent or Ready Player One? It‘s been a few years but I remember liking those after Hunger Games. 5mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Bookwormjillk I'll never make the box set mistake again, that's for sure. I read Divergent as a teenager. I remember enjoying the first novel, but DNF'd the second. I haven't read Ready Player One, though. It's read on my TBR pile forever, so I might dig it out and give it a try now that you've recommended it. Thank you! 5mo

I AM ON CHAPTER 10, WHERE YOU GUYS AT?

TheIntrovertedDodoBird I just started The Maze Runner yesterday. I'm on chapter 8. I'm not too sure if I like it yet, but I'm sticking with it for now 😊. 5mo
Girl808 Have you seen the movie? 5mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Girl808 I have. On this rare occasion, I think the film is far superior to the book. I just DNF'd the series. 5mo

Girl808 That would be extremely rare. Hmmmm I seen the movie first and then read the book. Did you do it in that order? 5mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Girl808 I saw the films first, too. I loved them, though admittedly, nowhere near as much as The Hunger Games. I've never thought a film adaption was superior to a book before. It's disconcerting. The portrayal of the characters felt far more palatable in the film than the book series. I hailed the bail around half way through. 5mo
Girl808 Just finished...I think the book was better. It does start off slow until Thomas go in the maze. 5mo

This is a soft pick for me. There were quite a few characters to keep up with. The world was very interesting. And the twist at the end had me a little shocked. I don't know why, because I know there is a second book. But, when people were asking me how I was liking it, I kept saying "Hunger Games was better".

The Maze Runner is a story set in a post-apocalyptic world where a group of boys are trapped in the middle of a maze with no memory of their life before the maze. The main character Thomas finds himself in the maze as the newest meme bet of the group. He strives to become a maze runner to find a way out of the maze and to freedom.

This book tripped me up. It started off boring and flat and about halfway through the book it became action packed and three d so I was starting to feel it. But the ending came and it was extremely abrupt ups and downs that all just molded into nothing. 3⭐️

There was a maze and the characters did run around, but I wasn‘t invested in the story. I never connected with any of the characters and the resolution was just a teaser for the next book. I‘m just not curious about why these boys got trapped in the glade with an ever-changing maze.

The book was about a group of boys who appear to be randomly selected, who are put into a maze with massive stone walls. Their main goal is to escape the maze, however it seems that there is more to the story.
If you like books that are exciting and fantasy, then this book is for you.
The theme of the story would be either loyalty. Throughout the book we see the gladers (boys in the maze) struggle with where their loyalty lies, some even choosing

A group of young boys (average age 15), mysteriously appear in a place they call the glade. Each boy has lost their memory completely except for their name. Surrounding the glade are four, giant, stone walls. There are openings in these walls and inside it contains a maze. The main character, Thomas, has something different about him, and after he arrives in the glade, everything starts to change.

emilysyratt If you like Y/A novels that are action heavy, this book‘s for you. This book is told in third person limited POV, because there is the inner thoughts of a character, but it‘s only one, and there are impersonal pronouns used. 3y

The Maze Runner by James Dashner is about a teenage boy named Thomas. Thomas gets sent to a mysterious maze where he has no memory of his past life. Thomas is not the only kid who was sent there. Soon after he arrived he joined the group of all of the kids and became the lead maze runner. Time goes by fighting to get out of the never changing maze and finally, they find a way out.

myahlebleu@gmail.com The theme of The Maze Runner is the key to survive which is persistence. I rate this book a 5/5 because very rarely in the book did it become confusing. It was straight forward the whole book. The book kept me intrigued and curious to what would happen next. I highly recommend this book to teenagers who love mystery and action books. Overall this book has been one of my favourite books to read, I love action and mysteries. 3y

It just has a lot of jargon right now but.. do I care? I am not sure I do. It‘s about a boy named Thomas, who was sent to a maze, full of guys, that no one has been able to solve. The next day a girl comes, and they solve the maze. It‘s explained to them, by a group name WICKED that they are part of what they call “The Trials”. Wonderfully written, loved it

Dashner‘s work on his SF, ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults award winning novel will catch the interests of older elementary students. Thomas wakes up and finds himself in a maze with a group of teens who all, including himself, have no memory of their past. He joins them in the task of trying to find a way out of the every changing maze. This book would do well as IR.

Betrinag Reading rockets provides information on IR, and ways to foster it with students https://www.readingrockets.org/article/independent-reading UDL principle 6.1 will help students set goals for their reading, while EL strategy 29 can help students access tools that will assist their reading. #ucflae3414sp21 4y
DrSpalding Reading rockets is another high-quality resource. This could be used as a book club option but yes, independent reading of these kinds of adventurous stories could motivate and engage readers! Did you know that the author makes cameo appearances in the movies? 4y
