Bitter Greens
Bitter Greens | Kate Forsyth
Charlotte-Rose de la Force, exiled from the court of King Louis XIV, has always been a great talker and teller of tales. Selena Leonelli, once the exquisite muse of the great Venetian artist Tiziano, is terrified of time. Margherita, trapped in a doorless tower and burdened by tangles of her red-gold hair, must find a way to escape. You may think you know the story of Rapunzel . . .

Kate Forsyth is a wonderful writer and very prolific. Bitter Greens is a take on the Rapunzel story. This book is riveting, dark, quite brutal and I can‘t put it down.

Another fairy tale retelling I chose was this historical version of Rapunzel. I absolutely loved this book and really want to read more from this author. I really got a Kate Morton vibe from this tale with interweaving storylines and beautiful writing.

Bookzombie Thanks for tagging me in this. I didn‘t get it reposted. 😕 1. I notice covers more because of Litsy too, but otherwise I don‘t know that they get me to pick up a book. 2. I think the tagged is the last book I bought. 3. NPR, lately I have been listening to The Daily Life on Spotify and it give me news and music. Plus my husband tells me about articles he has read. 4. My first audio of 2020 was Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth. It was a #Bookopoly pick. I have been meaning to read Kate Forsyth for so long and I love fairy tale retellings. This was a win for me. It took me a while to get in the groove with this story, but once I did, I was so invested in the characters. This more a character driven book than anything. I cannot wait to read more Kate Forsyth. I am so glad I read this! Audio was well done, too!

Part historical fiction and part fairy tale, Kate Forsyth weaves together the story of Charlotte-Rose de la Force‘s banishment from the court of the Sun King with the story of Rapunzel. Kate Reading does an excellent job as narrator-two thumbs up!

A retelling of Rapunzel combined with the story of real-life French novelist Charlotte-Rose de la Force. Sexier than I expected, and also includes a rape scene that could be very triggering.

Historic fiction, meets fairytale, meets Fantasy all presented in a lyrical and meticulously researched passage. This book was so perfect that I simply am writing unable to find all the words to express how beautiful it is. The Alice Network did not capture me so I put it down for now. I so loved this author's retelling of Beauty & the Beast in Nazi Germany (partly why I'm not connecting to Alice) so I decided to read her first book. This retelling of Rapunzel is set during the Sun King's reign about the woman who first wrote it, and the fairy tale is already coming alive to me. Definitely a Forsyth fan now❣️ Leah you will ❤️🙌🏻😎 #bitmoji #greatbook #badcover

LeahBergen Ooo! Interesting! 👀 7y
laurieluna She wrote a little known series before this called The Witches of the Eileanan too! Took me an age to track all 6 books down. I've read the first 2. Definitely adding this one to stack! X 7y
Sydsavvy @miralunasbooknook it's hard because I guess her publisher doesn't have the new books on Amazon, but the three big titles are on Audible so that's how I'm accessing her. If I had known, I would have bought her books at the conference, dumb me! 7y
laurieluna @Sydsavvy I think it's a series that's fallen by the wayside. She wrote it about 20 years ago and the copies I managed to get are from '98 to '02! Xx 7y

I picked up this book because a book blogger had gushed so much about it. It was more adult than I was expecting but it was also one of the best retellings I've read, mixed in richly with history and painted so vividly I could not get enough of the different cultures in the book. If your looking for a retelling that will leave you scratching your head wondering if Rapunzel was a true a story this is the tale for you.

This is a book I have had digitally from NetGalley for a long time (we're talking years), and when I found a beautiful paperback copy I decided to finally give it a read. I love historical fiction, so I found this enchanting. Interweaving the story of a seventeenth century nun banished from the French King's court and the original fairytale of Rapunzel, this novel blends stunning historical details with beautiful storytelling.

Reecaspieces Glad to know I am not the only one with LOOOOOONG Netgalley books! 8y
Luv2readbookz So I've got a question, @Reecaspieces and @Lissa00, do you go ahead and review really old books on your Netgally lists? Or can you delete them if you're no longer interested in reading them? Not really sure how that all works. Thanks! 8y

The research behind Bitter Greens, Kate Forsyth's richly imagine and seemingly-effortless retelling of the Rapunzel fairytale, thrums inside this story like an ever-constant but never obtrusive heartbeat. It is bewitching, brutal, and highly imaginative, a historical, fairytale saga that swept me up in its braid of three women, their fates and their stories.
