I read A Severed Head by Iris Murdoch last autumn. The November gloom and chilly intellectualism of this book fits perfectly with that season, so I might read it again when the leaves fall 🍂

July brings flowers, poetic summer gloom and long evenings with a pile of books. What are you reading this month?

Sometimes you need a secret garden of roses and quiet to retreat to with a book. I'm hoping @Litsy is that safe haven. I've just finished The Game of Kings by Dorothy Dunnett and am now scouring every blog and online forum in order to decipher all its clues and mysteries 🖤
What are you reading?

I finished Brave New World a week ago and can't stop thinking about it. It has been in my to read for around ten years! I think that, given the current political situation, it's affected more than it would have had I read it earlier.
Have any of you read it? What did you think?

Another shot of Death In Spring, taken among bluebells and spring sunshine. 🌞
I've just started reading my first Agatha Christie novel - Passenger To Frankfurt - and I'm hooked. Are any of you Christie fans?

'Death In Spring' is a book I could read and reread and still not fathom all its secrets. It is mysterious and beautiful with lines such as, 'Souls have no mouth, so they spoke to us through the voice of the wind.' That it remains a mystery only makes it more enchanting. This is the first Catalonian novel I've read, it will not be the last. 🌱✨
p.s. Apologies for the unintentional hiatus. I've been using Instagram more (@oonagh.moon) 🙊

Betrayals, Valkyries, the gods and bloody revenge - this book was everything I expected it to be and Tolkien's writing is as magical as ever. 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Is there a better feeling than beginning the first chapter of a new book with a warm cup of tea? I think not. About to start The Young Bride by Alessandro Baricco.

I first read this book when I was seventeen. Feeling dissatisfied with everything I read and also with myself, War & Peace marked a turning point. It opened up a whole new world - of Russian literature and beyond. So thankful for that determined moment when I picked it off the shelf.

Currently reading The Secret History. It gets great reviews so it may be controversial to say I'm not enjoying it. 🙊I find the characters irritating. I know they're probably not meant to be likeable but if a character is morally ambiguous they at least need to be charismatic enough to make up for it.
November: folktales, walks in the amber woods, reading of immoral scholars and ballet dancers. All while the wild geese come into land, singing their cold, unnatural song.

The Iron Wolf - a beautiful collection of myths and legends with rich, eerie illustrations. I'm always drawn to rereading it in the autumn 🍁

November: a time of smoke and darkness, frosted leaves. The time of the deer, the time of the bat. A month shrouded in dark fog and poetry.

Hope to finish For Two Thousand Years today & start The Secret History. So behind the times on that one ?

One last #SpookyRead 🎃🍂Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is a surreal fable about a girl discovering the truth of her past. All the while she is pursued by a mysterious, bloodsucking creature known as The Polecat

Only a few days left of October so I'm going to squeeze in another #SpookyRead It's a reread for me - Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I remember reading this in broad daylight on a spring day and getting goosebumps 😨 Thoroughly eerie tale about our darker selves 👹

My next #SpookyRead is Tennyson's Idylls of the King. An atmospheric read perfect for Halloween - ghost ships, wizards, dark prophecies and the Queen of bad faeries herself, Morgan le Fay.

Participating in #AllHallowsRead 🎃 I have a soft spot for Gothic fiction and penny dreadfuls so can't wait to share some of my favourites. My first #SpookyRead is a classic blood chiller - Bram Stoker's Dracula! 👿
@Litsy
Despite the simplistic writing and cliches I'd still recommend Six of Crows for fast paced escapism. The twist ending also means I'll read Crooked Kingdom to find out what happens next 🍂

Autumnal moment with spiced apple pie and a book on books ☕🍰😋

The Master and Margarita blends fantasy and reality, black humour sits by philosophy and deep meditations on humanity, all against the backdrop of Stalin's regime at its most oppressive. A challenging but rewarding book. My favourite scene was when Margarita transforms into a witch and flys over Moscow on a broomstick. Maybe reading it under a full moon gave the scene a certain intensity! 🎃🌙

I wanted my first review to be a book I truly love. This tale about a brave, outcast young girl living in the wild, often austere Scottish Highlands and surviving on poetry and a romantic imagination has entered my soul forever.
