Teachers can use "The Paper Bag Princess" to spark discussions about gender roles and the importance of resilience and creativity. After reading, students can engage in activities such as rewriting the story from a different character's perspective or creating their own modern fairy tales that challenge traditional norms.
"The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munsch is a clever twist on traditional fairy tales, featuring a princess who outsmarts a dragon to rescue her prince. The story challenges gender stereotypes by showcasing the princess's resourcefulness and bravery. Munsch's engaging narrative and lively illustrations make it a favorite among young readers. This empowering tale encourages discussions about strength, independence, and redefining fairy tale norms.
Anyone ever look back at there favorite books growing up. I just did, and my TBR makes a lot more sense now.

The reason this book has been historically banned are atrocious. This is a classic story of a princess who saves not just herself, but the prince as well. The problem, for this reader, is that the prince is a narcissistic A55#013 who cannot see beyond the vain. He tells the princess, who just saved him, that a paper bag is a horrible thing to wear and to come back when better dressed. As a woman, I stand behind ⬇
A delightful tale where the princess does the saving!

This book is a fairytale with a surprise ending. This book shows girls that they don‘t need to end up with a prince to be happy and they can have the bare minimum to be happy, and don‘t need to follow what society says.
The Paper Bag Princess was published in 1980. It is written by Robert N. Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko. This book is fiction and is about a princess who goes to save a prince and faces a dragon. It has a twist from what people normally would expect.
See Kara‘s book review of The Paper Bag Princess on this weeks Manuscript Monday. https://www.bookinterrupted.com/post/manuscript-monday-the-paper-bag-princess I dressed up as The Paper Bag Princess for a Halloween party in my twenties. I also love this book and read it to my kids.

This story is a spin on a classic fairytale involving a princess, prince, and a dragon. Princess Elizabeth does everything she can to save her prince, only to find out he's not what she is looking for. I loved reading this book and I think it has a great message for children. It is silly with an even better meaning.
Date of Publication: September 1, 2009
Genre: Fantasy
Brief Summary: A dragon comes and burns down the town. The princess does her best to save the prince. The princess makes the dragon show how strong he is and how fast he is. The princess tricks the dragon to get super tired to save the prince! The prince complains that the princess does not look good. She leaves the Prince!
Side Note: Not the normal fantasy ending
This book was published in 1980, and is a humorous take on a fairytale. The story follows a princess and a dragon, and the princess saves the prince from a burning fire. The prince is incredibly rude to the princess, and she decides not to marry him. I will definitely use this book in my classroom!
Published in 1980, This story was about a princess who had all of her clothes burned off by a dragon's breath. The princess followed the dragon's trail and tricked him into getting tired out so he wouldn't be able to keep ruining their town. After the princess saved the prince he said “you smell like ashes and don't look like a real princess. She decided that he did appreciate her and didn't marry him.

Book of choice
This book is all about reversing princess stereotypes. Princess Elizabeth is set to marry Prince Ronald, but a dragon attacks the castle and kidnaps Ronald. Elizabeth must save him from the dragon so they can get married. She does what she can to make the dragon tired so she can sneak past him to save Ronald. When she does save Ronald, he is not nice to her and she leaves him and they do not get married. It shows that a princess can be a hero too.

The Paper Bag Princess is about a fierce princess who goes to save the prince she is set to marry who was taken by a dragon. The dragon burned down her castle and the only thing she had left to wear was a paper bag. The princess takes on the dragon by outsmarting him and saves the prince. The prince decides she doesn't look like a “real princess“ in her paper bag and they do not get married in the end.
This book is about a princess who lost everything she had in a fire produced by a dragon. The princess befriends the dragon and he helps her to find the prince that he had taken. Once the prince is found, the princess becomes unhappy and decides to stay single.
Read this old used copy of a classic to my baby in the wee hours of the morning today. I hadn't read it in years and it was just as great as I remembered. The ending where she tells off the prince (who she rescued from a dragon!) for criticizing her not looking like a princess anymore is hilarious. "Ronald you are a bum." Hahaha. Also love how she outsmarts the dragon. Dressing up as her remains my best Halloween costume.
I was in local bookshop and spied the big hard back copy and nearly fell over, 40th anniversary!! So happy it‘s stayed in print that long . But can‘t believe it‘s been that long. I read this book to every class I had when I was teaching. Such an important story then and now. Happy Anniversary Princess. 👏👏🎉🎉
Post by @Kimberlone made me think of this. Read it to my nieces years ago. Still love this updated fairy tale.

Happy 40th anniversary to one of my favourite stories! This was a great read about how Elizabeth came to be, how Ronald became a bum, and the lasting impact of The Paper Bag Princess:

This F book follows Princess Elizabeth, who is completely enamored with the snobby but charming Prince Ronald. When Ronald is snatched up by a dragon who destroys her castle & her clothes, she puts on the only thing she can find: a paper bag, & heads off to save Prince Ronald. This is one of my absolute favorite books, as it teaches the importance of self love & self worth, & not to allow people to make you feel bad about yourself #UCFLAE3414F19

This is a reread from Maya's early childhood days, but I'm waiting for my other P books to come in at the library and I have always loved this book! The illustrations and text go together so perfectly. Elizabeth rocks, Ronald is a bum (with an air of 80s yuppie about him 😂). Great reversal to the damsel in distress storyline.
I picked this up for a baby shower gift for a friend if mine and am trying to think up an appropriate inscription. Something hopeful, that will back up the message of the book, that connects to the future....but I keep coming back to "dont let the bastards grind you down" which isn't entirely appropriate. Or maybe it is? ?

I'm ashamed to say I haven't read this book until now, even after I performed in the freshman class theatrical adaptation of it for Bryn Mawr's May Day in 2001. A cute, feminist twist on the damsel in distress trope.

A delightful children's picture book where the heroine makes all her own choices!

Clever, feisty & strong Princess who won't let that dragon get away, even when he burns all her clothes! This is one of my favorite kids' books of all time! Tonight Wee boy saw a bag on the floor and wanted his own bag dress. #5stars #girlpower #betterthanDisney
“And they didn‘t get married after all.”
Dee Dee and I picked dragon books to read this week. This book is freaking adorable. Must read for little princesses.
I laughed out loud at this illustration yesterday, when I noticed that the dragon is being sassy AF. Look at her checking her nails. 😂💅💅💅😂
Princess Elizabeth asked the Dragon if she‘s the strongest, and fastest Dragon all around. #ThrowbackReadathon
I reread this book and a few others yesterday, but I didn‘t have a chance to post any of the pictures. This was one of my very favourites as a young child. To be completely honest, I loved ALL of of Robert Munsch‘s books. ♥️#ThrowbackReadathon #24in48
There's absolutely no way I would be able to take part of the #ThrowbackReadathon without including a nice stack of picture books that take me ALLLLLL the way back 😉😆
Most excited to reread Robert Munsch ❤️
“The Paper Bag Princess” by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Martchenko, is a F picture book great for S. This is not your typical Prince saved the Princess fairytale. Instead Robert Munsch decided to switch it up and have the Princess save the Prince from the dragon. But the ending is also a twist as well. Read to find out what happened when the Princess saves the Prince!
I'm pretty sure I've mentioned how much I love this book but in case I haven't here's photographic proof... I just found out that there is finally a film adaptation in the works BUT it's projected to star Margot Robbie AKA Harley Quinn. *SIGH*
I mean can we not? Please?

This book seriously #needsmorelove! It's probably my favorite picture book ever. Princess Elizabeth is everything a heroine should be: brave, clever, and determined. This is such an empowering book for little girls. I can't seem to let go of my dream for a Disney film. Maybe one day... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

#PrinceOfDarkness is Prince Ronald because if he thinks girls should only where pretty dresses, and ultimately "look like a princess" he is living in the dark!
This was one of the first books to teach me that girls can do anything. I still have it and read it to my son and will always read it to him so he knows boys and girls are equal ❤️
