Mist | Stephen King

#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King's terrifying novella about a town engulfed in a dense, mysterious mist as humanity makes its last stand against unholy destruction--originally published in the acclaimed short story collection Skeleton Crew and made into a TV series, as well as a feature film starring Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden. In the wake of a summer storm, terror descends...David Drayton, his son Billy, and their neighbor Brent Norton join dozens of others and head to the local grocery store to replenish supplies following a freak storm. Once there, they become trapped by a strange mist that has enveloped the town. As the confinement takes its toll on their nerves, a religious zealot, Mrs. Carmody, begins to play on their fears to convince them that this is God's vengeance for their sins. She insists a sacrifice must be made and two groups--those for and those against--are aligned. Clearly, staying in the store may prove fatal, and the Draytons, along with store employee Ollie Weeks, Amanda Dumfries, Irene Reppler, and Dan Miller, attempt to make their escape. But what's out there may be worse than what they left behind. This exhilarating novella explores the horror in both the enemy you know--and the one you can only imagine.

Had a voiceover come in and referenced The Twilight Zone, I would not have been surprised. It‘s all here in this novella: a meteorological phenomenom, creatures you never really see, a single common setting all readers can relate to that is full of shadows and a cast of sketchy characters who turn on one another, and the military industrial complex to blame for it all (maybe). King‘s short stories are the best - direct and terrifying.

I stayed up past my bedtime to finish this last night. It's definitely the type of story that made King the King of Horror. I earned 75 points for #Scarathlon #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall

I wasn‘t expecting to like this book as much as I did. I think it‘s one of my favorites that I‘ve ever read by King, and not just because of the monsters either. The way he portrayed them was scary, don‘t get me wrong. What was scarier was how the people in the store turned on each other so quickly due to fear. That was quite a read, Mr. King. #scarathlon #blackcatcrew

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I reread The Mist this evening. It‘s probably my favorite Stephen King novella (although I love A Good Marriage). I hated the movie , but for some reason I revisit the book at least once a year.
Photo was taken by Phil Patterson three days ago showing the fog over St Louis. The photo was actually what made me think of and reread The Mist.

Julsmarshall Wow! That photo 😍 2y
mabell How amazing! We‘ve had some crazy fog! Thanksgiving night (awful driving back), then Saturday morning, which was lovely 2y
slategreyskies Wow, I‘d love to be in one of those tall buildings looking out with a sea of mist beneath me! 2y

The Mist movie's ending proves to be far darker and arguably better than its original Stephen King novella, and the king of horror himself agrees.

🗣 💬 was the book better❔️Was the movie ending better than the book ending❔️Was the tv show better than the movie❔️

Laughed so hard listening to my kiddo's commentary during the movie 🤣

I read this one years ago and wanted to revisit it. I forgot how terrifying this story is. The suspense, psychological stress and the flat out horror of The Mist still hits me just as hard. What sticks with me most is the dual evils of this story. Just like other great works of horror, King really forces you to look inside and ask yourself "what would I do if I was in this situation?" I think that is what I appreciate most about horror.

For today's #TarotTakeover I chose The Mist.
It's a terrifying, heartbreaking story about a father and his son trying to survive when monsters start appearing out of a mist that has settled over the world. The movie is actually (especially the ending) more horrifying than the book 🌫

This 165 page Book is everything! I watched the movie and loved it and decided to try it out. If you want a quick read but also want to be creeped out this is your book. Also, if you watched the movie and didn‘t read the book the endings are different. Each come with come with their own charm. 😱5/5😱

It was an “okay” pick. My favorite part is the beginning when the mist rolled in. It was creepy and suspenseful and atmospheric up until the characters get stranded at the grocery store. I think the story lost its steam at that point and never gained it back. I‘ve never *loved* Lovecraftian fiction (don‘t hate me!) so all of the killer creatures almost felt more darkly comedic than scary.

Up next in my #readingStephenKing project is Firestarter!!

Karkar Have you watched the Mist movie? I like I like that ending better than the book. 3y

First Stephen King book! (I KNOW I KNOW)
I‘ve seen the movie years ago but wanted to get captured by the book too! It keeps you on your toes the entire time🌬🌫
It makes me want to check out the new TV series - has anyone watched it yet?
Personally it makes me a little crazy when I don‘t have an official end to something😂 But I don‘t hold that against the books, I still appreciate their endings😛

Work has been pretty hectic, so I haven't had much time to read (for entertainment) lately. It took me forever, but I finally finished "The Mist" by Stephen King, and what a damn good book... Side note; This is literally the only 'online social platform' I have, due to security reasons... and I might not be as active as I'd like, but I absolutely love reading y'all's reviews/quotes/book recommendations. It makes my day.

wordslinger42 I enjoy Litsy more than I enjoy any other social media 😅 It's definitely a much friendlier place! 4y

A fun take on Lovecraftian horror. I wish the ending wasn‘t so open-ended but it makes it scarier for the characters.

🎧 Just started this 5-hour title in audio: After a violent storm, an ominous mist develops on a Maine lake.
Not sure how this is going to roll out, but I‘ve already had to pause as tension mounts *in the set up!*

Will Patton is the audiobook narrator. He‘s seems a bit old for the POV1 role of a young father; but he does know how to spool out/pace the delivery of the story!

I just watched this movie last week so I decided to read this as my Stephen King book for the month (I try to read at least one SK book every month!). I quite enjoyed both the book and the movie, and I‘m actually glad I watched the movie first because I think I would have had a hard time picturing these crazy things without it! So disturbing. 4⭐️

In celebration of Stephen King's newest release, If It Bleeds, i'm ranking/reviewing all ten books of his that I've read.

6.
King packs a lot of great stuff into 100 pages, but the ending disappointed me. It wasn't a bad one by any means, but it felt like it didn't know what it was reaching for.

Although I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good scare, I was let down just a little after seeing the movie beforehand. Nevertheless, Stephen King does a great job at building suspense and keeping the pace.

The story mainly evolves around a father and his son trapped in a supermarket with a mist sweeping the streets. And it is a mist they will never forget!

Overall I rate this 4.5 out of 5.

Currently reading 'The Mist' by Stephen King. Last night I drove home, in the dark, in patches of dense fog. This morning it's as thick as pea soup. A big shout out to Mother Nature for helping to make the story extra creepy! 😂

1. Tagged my current audiobook!
2. Finally a weekend where I have no work and no obligations beyond some family stuff so reading and light homework.
3. I do like hard boiled eggs but mostly in salads I'm not a huge fan of them on they're own anymore.
4. I'm not sure there's so many names I like. But it would be more unique.
5. I always do!!

Great short story! Easy, quick to read and the perfect amount of scares. I love Stephen King‘s book and the way he creates believable characters. You can feel the tension in every page, and it‘s hard to put down. The ending is different from the movie (from those who watched it), but it was quite appropriate imo. Worth reading!
