A Winter's Promise
A Winter's Promise | Christelle Dabos
#1 Bestseller in France Lose yourself in the fantastic world of the arks and in the company of unforgettable characters in this French runaway hit, Christelle Dabos' The Mirror Visitor quartet. Plain-spoken, headstrong Ophelia cares little about appearances. Her ability to read the past of objects is unmatched in all of Anima and, what's more, she possesses the ability to travel through mirrors, a skill passed down to her from previous generations. Her idyllic life is disrupted, however, when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, a taciturn and influential member of a distant clan. Ophelia must leave all she knows behind and follow her fianc to Citaceleste, the capital of a cold, icy ark known as the Pole, where danger lurks around every corner and nobody can be trusted. There, in the presence of her inscrutable future husband, Ophelia slowly realizes that she is a pawn in a political game that will have far-reaching ramifications not only for her but for her entire world. The World of the Arks Long ago, following a cataclysm called the Rupture, the world was shattered into many floating celestial islands, now known as arks. Over each, the spirit of an omnipotent and immortal ancestor abides. The inhabitants of these arks each possess a unique power. Ophelia, with her ability to read the pasts of objects, must navigate this fantastic, disjointed, perilous world using her trademark tenacity and quiet strength. An unforgettable heroine, a rich and bountiful universe, intrigue and suspense: A Winter's Promise is perfect for readers of Margaret Rogerson's An Enchantment of Ravens, Melissa Albert's The Hazel Wood, V.E. Schwab's "Shades of Magic" series, Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone, Kenneth Oppel's "Airborne" series, and N.K. Jemisin "Broken Earth" series. Extract: I think we could have all lived happily, in a way, God, me and the others, if it weren't for that accursed book. It disgusted me. I knew what bound me to it in the most sickening of ways, but the horror of that particular knowledge came later, much later. I didn't understand straight away, I was too ignorant.

Such a boring cover and cheesy title (what does it even mean?), but such a great fantasy! I loved the world building, complex magic system, and dark court intrigue. If you like fantasies that skew a little darker (think His Dark Materials), you‘ll also like this.

Ch 10 - Gamekeeper. Thorn is annoying me. I‘d sympathise with him having to get married when he doesn‘t want to but he‘s taciturn to the point of non-communication and he has no sympathy for Ophelia (in the same position) or her aunt Rosaline, transplanted to a strange, frozen world. He seems to be playing a political game but he hasn‘t even told them that yet but expects them to play along

humouress Citaceleste vaguely reminds me of Gormenghast or Lord Valentine‘s Castle; a city within a palace (it‘s been a while since I read the other 2) 5mo
humouress Originally written in French and translated into English. Not as smooth as it could be, especially with things like idioms 4mo

I loved the characters, but the world-building seemed inconsistent, which made it difficult to keep track of some of the characters‘ movements and conflicts.

At first it was mere curiosity that kept me reading this, its an unusual concept and I wanted to see where it would go. It's a very slow burner this book and I didn't warm to Ophelia straight away but out of nowhere I loved her and had to know what was going to happen next. I love all the characters actually. However, being a translation there are a few sentences that jarred my concentration. Nevertheless, I've ordered Book 2.

An enjoyable fantasy - as other reviews have said the world building is wonderful but it does feel a little too slow at times. I‘m keen to read the next one - I think it might get faster paced. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator Emma Feeney did a great job. 🙌

I love when it's not clear who are trustworthy and who aren't.

The world was so unique and interesting - there were so many awesome things that I loved.

I sometimes liked the writing that was a bit different than usual. I felt like the hole book was an introduction. I am interested to see how this story continues now when the characters & world are familiar to me.

Another book where I have mix feelings. This is a confuse world with many things going on and many characters. However, I‘m intrigued to see what will happen to the main characters, Ophelia and Thorn. I want to read book 2 to see how the story goes. This is a so-so story for me but I want to continue the series, what can I say🤷🏽‍♀️3.4⭐️Im happy that I finally read it and I love that cover😍 All the books in the series have similar covers😍

This started off really strong with some interesting world building that had me convinced I would be buying the rest of the series before the weekend ends but then it really went downhill for me. Tons of intrigue but not much plot, I don‘t mind a slow read but this felt so overly long I was happy to reach the end.

The “next Harry Potter” this is not, but that doesn‘t stop it from being a delightful read on its own!

✨ R E A L L Y cool premise
✨ intriguing philosophical world-building

— okay characters
— plot is interesting but takes its time (can be good, can be bad)
— the romance is like, the least interesting part

Overall: A fantastical dystopia with political machinations & a decent, if tepid, romance that keeps you interested. ★★★☆☆.

BennettBookworm Whenever something is advertised as the “next HP,” I always wish they hadn‘t set such high expectations 🤦🏻‍♀️lol 3y

4.3 ?
A whirlwind adventure into a strange new world after The Rupture. God splintered the world and divided it into arks (which floated in the sky just like the cover). Each ark are different, and each are governed by ancient human (an immortal with great magical power). Enters Ophelia, a girl from Anima with special ability of travelling through mirror and "reading" objects, she can touch any objects and she can know its past as well as ?

Weisubei The people that touch the objects. The book starts with an engagement of Ophelia and Thorn, a man from a faraway Ark with a very harsh weather and culture. The start of this book is rather slow but once you get into it, it pulls you right in and doesn't let go. I find Thorn a problematic and very cold but I can't help falling for his harsh attitude. Definitely a MUST read if you love good character developent and great magical system. 3y

4⭐️
This book was full of whimsical charm and political intrigue. The world and characterizations really reminded me of Howl‘s Moving Castle. I love that it didn‘t follow the cookie cutter model of a majority of YA books. I couldn‘t quite give it five stars because parts of it were a bit confusing and the plot was relatively slow. I am eager to read the sequel.

Booksbymybed I was thinking Howl‘s Moving Castle the whole time too:D 3y

What is this trend of stopping YA fantasy books just as the heroine is crossing a threshold to another plane or world? This is the second time I have encountered this storytelling device. I am quite impressed with the layered unfolding of Dabos‘ story as it moves along. Nothing is what - or who - it seems. #newyearwhodis

AnneCecilie I must admit that I didn‘t think about that plot device, but then I don‘t read much YA. I was just lost in the story 4y
mrsmarch @AnneCecilie I read a book last spring for #LMPBC that had the exact same device at the end — so it was striking. 4y
mrsmarch @AnneCecilie I‘m definitely interested in the rest of this series! It‘s a quartet but the fourth doesn‘t seem to be in English yet. 4y
AnneCecilie If the book you tagged is anything like the The Mirror series, I have to check it out. I‘ve ordered it from the library that is closed at the moment, but hopefully I don‘t have to wait too long. 4y
