... and Then You Die of Dysentery
... and Then You Die of Dysentery: Life Lessons from the Oregon Trail | Lauren Reeves
20 posts | 19 read | 48 to read
A quirky, nostalgic send-up to the Oregon Trail computer game, featuring snarky and hard-earned life lessons from the trail. Pack your wagons, find your ride-or-(literally) die friends, and roll up to Matt's General Store with a sack of cash--it's time to hit the Oregon Trail, twenty-first-century style! ...And Then You Die of Dysentery is the perfect send-up to the sometimes frustrating, always entertaining, and universally beloved Oregon Trail computer game. Featuring a four-color design in the game's iconic 8-bit format, alongside pop culture references galore, the book offers 50 humorous, snarky lessons gleaned from the game's most iconic moments, including gems such as: --Suffering from exhaustion is a real thing. (It's not just PR code for why a celebrity went to rehab.) --If you hunt too frequently in one area, game will become scarce. (The first signs of gentrification!) --Invite your sweetie to cuddle with you while looking up at the stars. (The night sky was the original Netflix & Chill. Step 1: Loosen up Orion's belt...) With its laugh-out-loud commentary and its absurdist nostalgia, ...And Then You Die of Dysentery is the ultimate trip down memory lane ... all the way to the Willamette Valley.

OMG! This was fabulously funny! If you remember playing Oregon Trail as a kid, you‘ll find this book humorous! I‘m 4 books behind on meeting my reading goal so I picked up some shorter reads to catch up and this one did not disappoint. #humor

This books could have had so much more.

I wish there was a category between pick and so-so because I would place this title there. Enjoyed it, laughed outl loud but seriously this book could have been so much more.

I found this on #Hoopla and since I am running a virtual Oregon Trail race thought it would be fun to read.

marleed I purchased it on Amazon a few months ago for 1.99. I thought it was a hoot and gave it to my son as his 30th birthday card. It was the cheapest I‘ve purchased all year! 4y

The best thing about this? You can read it in 10 minutes or less. A few of the illustrations were good. Overall it was pretty disappointing. At least it was really cheap.

hes7 Aw, bummer. This looks like it could‘ve been fun. 5y
marleed Haha. It was cheap. I purchased it to use as a card. It was actually cheaper than a card so it served its purpose well! (edited) 5y
AmyK1 @marleed Yep! I paid around $2 lol. It would be great for a card. 5y
AmyK1 @hes7 Yeah, I thought so too 😞 5y

IamIamIam LOL, you learn a lot about the people you love on the Oregon Trail! My dad tossed my mom off the wagon because she broke a leg! (The card game is incredibly fun, btw... 😂😂) 5y

Suet624 I was so traumatized when I played this game when it first came out. All my kids were dying. 😭😭😳😳 5y
CoffeeK8 You can find the old game online and still play it. I used it during a lesson on Westward Expansion and my students were ruthless 5y
marleed I had to order this - the HB was 77% off on Amazon. This game was everything to my son for a couple years. 5y
Megabooks I‘ve really wanted to read it! 5y

What a bummer. The best part of it is the title. I‘m continually surprised what publishers are willing to put their name to and take our money for. I guess I shouldn‘t be.

iread2much Aww, so sad that it wasn‘t good 6y

My U.S. History starting the unit on Westward Expansion. I remembered @gibblr using The Oregon Trail when she taught this class.

My students are having a blast. The words above are a quote from one of my excited students.

Very, very short and not really focusing on "adulting". The graphics were funnier than the "advice", but didn't love either

Mehso-so

There are some real gems like this one, but most of it is drivel. I appreciated the jaunt down memory lane, but the version of Oregon Trail I grew up with was even more bare bones than what the author describes here, so it missed the mark for me as pure nostalgia. Borrow a copy and take five minutes to read, but maybe save your $ for food or oxen. 😉

Lreads That picture! 😂😂 6y
DGRachel @QuietlyLaura This was my favorite entry in the book. 😊 6y

She played this on a turquoise iMac. Bitch...I played this game on an Apple II-e. I bet her game was even in color, not just green on black. 🤣🤣 Yep, I am old AF.

Traci1 I played on a Commodore 64. I loved Oregon Trail, but Carmen Saniego was my life. Still looking for her... 6y
DGRachel @Traci1 OMG! Yes! I LOVED Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego! I didn‘t get to play it often in school but I had a DOS version on our Acer. **sigh** 6y
Amie I played oregon trail on an Apple IIe also! 6y

Eggbeater Yep! Apple IIe here too. I am 41. This person doesn't know hardship. I had to blow on the first Nintendo games to get them to work. I guess I'm a Golden Girl. 6y
BarbaraJean @Traci1 @DGRachel I never played Oregon Trail (gasp!), but I too lived for Carmen Sandiego. Played on a Mac SE. I knew my world flags like nobody‘s business, all because of that elusive Carmen SanDiego!! 6y

I‘m feeling a little better this afternoon, but Bailey is still having issues. So we are snuggling on the couch with special blankets and books for Jolabokaflod (Mom and I waited until after lunch but were not waiting until after dark 😂). I thought you might get a kick out of “The Look” I got from #Bailey. #meanmommy #dogsoflitsy #pitbullsoflitsy Happy Holidays, everyone and Merry Christmas to all who celebrate.

Nebklvr What did you do?! That is a “you‘d better behave yourself look” 6y
DGRachel @Nebklvr 😂 She doesn‘t appreciate being a book prop. 😂 I mean, I took her to McDonald‘s and bought her a cheeseburger, so you‘d think she‘d cut me a little slack, but nooooo...🤣🤣🤣 6y
Nebklvr @DGRachel Well...if you used me for a shelf i might be a little irritated too 6y

DGRachel @AlaMich She didn‘t eat all of it, and she refused french fries, so she‘s not 100% yet. I‘m hoping she‘ll be Golden by tomorrow, though. 6y
DGRachel @Soubhiville Thank you. Fingers crossed for a good day tomorrow! 6y

I expected this book to be essays about life that related back to The Oregon Trail game. Instead, they are illustrations (the best part) with short captions which, by and large, are not funny but are clearly trying to be. This one didn‘t work for me.

Librariana What a shame 😔 They could've had a really great book... something nostalgic even, if it paid homage to the game. 6y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana Right! That‘s what I was hoping for. And the illustrations are truly good, but what a bummer. 6y

Well, that was quick. I guess I don‘t get today‘s humor. I knew this would be a tongue in cheek look at The Oregon Trail game, which I remembered from school. But, I didn‘t laugh. I didn‘t even guffaw. The five minute read only produced a meh. Off to my next book... #24B4Monday

kristincatastrophic I just saw this in Target tonight. The title made me laugh so hard and I tried to read what it was actually about but got pulled away by children shouting "Mom, look at this" and my boyfriend "What do you want from Starbucks?" 6y
