Set against the assassination of JFK, a poignant and evocative crime novel that centers on a desperate cat-and-mouse chase across 1960s Americaa story of unexpected connections, daring possibilities, and the hope of second chances from the Edgar Award-winning author of The Long and Faraway Gone. Frank Guidrys luck has finally run out. A loyal street lieutenant to New Orleans mob boss Carlos Marcello, Guidry has learned that everybody is expendable. But now its his turnhe knows too much about the crime of the century: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Within hours of JFKs murder, everyone with ties to Marcello is turning up dead, and Guidry suspects hes next: he was in Dallas on an errand for the boss less than two weeks before the president was shot. With few good options, Guidry hits the road to Las Vegas, to see an old associatea dangerous man who hates Marcello enough to help Guidry vanish. Guidry knows that the first rule of running is "dont stop," but when he sees a beautiful housewife on the side of the road with a broken-down car, two little daughters and a dog in the back seat, he sees the perfect disguise to cover his tracks from the hit men on his tail. Posing as an insurance man, Guidry offers to help Charlotte reach her destination, California. If she accompanies him to Vegas, he can help her get a new car. For her, its more than a car its an escape. Shes on the run too, from a stifling existence in small-town Oklahoma and a kindly husband whos a hopeless drunk. Its an American story: two strangers meet to share the open road west, a dream, a hopeand find each other on the way. Charlotte sees that hes strong and kind; Guidry discovers that shes smart and funny. He learns thats she determined to give herself and her kids a new life; she cant know that hes desperate to leave his old one behind. Another rulefugitives shouldnt fall in love, especially with each other. A road isnt just a road, its a trail, and Guidrys ruthless and relentless hunters are closing in on him. But now Guidry doesnt want to just survive, he wants to really live, maybe for the first time. Everyones expendable, or they should be, but now Guidry just cant throw away the woman hes come to love. And it might get them both killed.

This is a new favorite. Set in the 1960's. Middle man mobster gets mixed up in the mob's involvement in the murder of JFK. He is on the run from the mob and runs into a woman and her children running from their own troubles. Everything fun about the 1960's and mobsters. 5 stars.

The assassination of JFK is the backdrop to this excellent novel. Frank Giudry works for the most powerful mob boss in New Orleans. Frank knows too much about the mob‘s involvement in the assassination and is running from his boss. Charlotte Roy, with her 2 children, decides on the spur of the moment to leave her dull life in Oklahoma for California. Their fates collide. This is not a conspiracy theory book just a nail biting story.

Finished this on the way to Toronto to see Canada vs Panama FIFA qualifier. Great game and a great book ( mob business and Kennedy assassination, road trips)

LeahBergen How fun! 3y
mcctrish @LeahBergen it might be the most exciting soccer game I‘ve ever been to!!! The reffing was atrocious and Panama was a show in itself ( faking, drama, trying to start fights 3 different times) Canada is really getting their groove on as a team too 3y

Interesting mix of two characters defining moments creating a solid road trip, both literally and figuratively. I enjoyed the character development and the nod to the Kennedy assassination, this was set well in a time when life was less complicated but just as complex for the people going through it.

Cathythoughts I enjoyed this one too ❤️👍🏻 3y

The setting is 1963 in the days following JFK‘s assassination in Dallas, most of the story happening on Route 66 through the southwest US. Several strangers‘ paths (each trying to escape their past) cross in a tightly told story

Just finished for IRL Bookclub... set in 1963, historical fiction set around John Kennedy‘s assassination.... a criminal on the run meets with a fellow traveler, also on the run.
Genre busting .. it‘s a thriller, a crime , a love story.. it‘s cinema, full of images. I was a bit uncertain of the plot at first ... but I became completely addicted! Great writing & story. So good !

Great for the historical setting, the crime, the heist movie pacing but just meh on the romance. Also, didn‘t like the epilogue. Overall, a fun way to kick of #thanksgivingbreak.

The Trespasser-might finish in Oct, tbh.

American Dirt-have misgivings, but for book club

Things Fall Apart-for “Read a Book with Kara” on youtube

November Road-obviously, it‘s named after the month

Ask Again Yes-borrowed from my sis months ago & she‘s asking for it back. Must finish by Thanksgiving (if we can have it 😭)

I really wasn't sure was to expect from this book. It sat unread for over a year in my TBR pile as others jumped ahead due to buzz or whatnot.
What the heck was I waiting for?! This was a great read. Talented writer....just wow. The story was a great cat and mouse chase, but the character development was spot on. I would definitely recommend!

Nute I have passed this up for other books as well, but now due to your comments this might get read sooner rather than later! 5y

This was a fast-paced novel that sucked me in from the first page. It alternates among 3 different characters, all destined for a collision course at the climax of the book. It‘s set during the week of the JFK assassination, but it felt like I was sucked into a 1940s film noir (not a bad thing at all!). 4⭐️ Recommended!

I read two books simultaneously on JFK‘s assassination. NR is a fictional retelling that involves mobsters. It‘s fast paced and sucked me right in.

The book on the right is about a mistress of JFK‘s that was murdered shortly after the assassination. Was it a planned hit because she knew to much about something? The author did a shit job with this book, if I‘m honest. What should have been compelling was boring, and not the primary focus.

I‘m 14 books away from meeting my GR goal of 2019. It‘s possible I‘ll make it but it‘s equally possible I won‘t. 😆

This week was a great reading week. Out of five books, two were five stars! P&P and Portrait of a Murderer blew me away, they‘re that good.

Cinfhen And The wives??? I was debating adding it to my BOTM box (edited) 5y

LeahBergen I so enjoyed that Anne Perry bio. Oh, on a side note ... I was just reading about this book 👇🏻 and wondering if you‘ve read it? I may need it! 5y
Reviewsbylola Oooooh just by the cover, that one looks pretty well done. I will have to buy it. 😆 Thanks for the heads up! @LeahBergen 5y
Reviewsbylola If You Tell felt a bit repetitive. There was so much abuse, and the author laid out every detail in a matter of fact way. Idk, it got old after awhile. The Wives was compulsively readable and I really enjoyed it, however it‘s probably best to get it from the library. @Cinfhen 5y
Reviewsbylola My goal is 200. Which I came close to last year. But I don‘t let it pressure me so if I don‘t make it, I don‘t mind. @cinfhen 5y
Cinfhen I saw on my GR that last year I read the most books at 173. I think I‘m only going to get to around 160 this year 5y

This novel really surprised me. I don‘t typically like historical fiction, but this was truly rooted in reality and human experience. A bold housewife fleeing an unhappy domestic situation crosses paths with a mobster during the JFK assassination. I loved this crime story, love story, and just overall story of characters. I didn‘t think this would be my cup of tea, but wow. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Centring on the assassination of JFK it‘s a surprisingly tender crime/thriller. With a cast of mobsters & vulnerable young women it would have been easy to have fallen into a plethora of cliches. But every character pops from the page - and has the ability to shock, surprise and show deep and complex emotions. The love story at the centre of the web of characters gives you hope that people can change however dark and violent the past.

What started as a meh read for me turned into a book worth finishing well past my bedtime. The Kennedy assassination is the backdrop for this story about hitmen and women who take a stand against 1960s housewife mores. It‘s gritty in its narrative, yet the book didn‘t feel too overly like a mobster read. Not my usual type of read, but I‘m so glad I could join in on the #BOTMbuddyread this month for this book.

I enjoyed this book much more than I anticipated. Not a genre I would normally pick up, and started out a bit slow for me but really picked up. It follows Guidry and Charlotte, both on the run who end up crossing paths and find something more than either expected. Quite a few twists and a beautifully developed story. I was incredibly satisfied while still wanting more. Highly recommended! Looking forward to the #botmbuddyread discussion.
