I Sette Quadranti
I Sette Quadranti | Agatha Christie

Set against the backdrop of a country estate, the story unfolds with a group of young adventurers determined to uncover the truth behind a perplexing murder. Led by the resourceful Lady Eileen "Bundle" Brent and her friends, the narrative embarks on a thrilling journey filled with twists and turns.

Gripping and intricate storyline + cleverly woven clues + unexpected revelations + lots of red herrings = impressive body of work ?

Bundle was so much fun to read. She was so driven to determine the plot behind the secret organization of the Seven Dials. She went off on her own to make discovery‘s. The two guys were so brash, crazy even. Nobody was as they seemed, as you learn from the end. As mentioned in the book, it‘s just like in the books where there are secret groups working behind the scenes. #AgathaChristie

It's the third day since I vowed to eat mindfully, and I've already fallen off the wagon. Even an excellent meal like black bean stew and watermelon is just so booooring to eat without a book. (In this case, the audio version of the tagged book.)

dylanisreading Relatable. It's so difficult for me to not read or watch something when I'm eating at home! 3y
aperfectmjk I must know what's in black bean stew? 3y
ImperfectCJ @aperfectmjk It's a recipe I got from Trader Joe's and modified. Put in a saucepan: one tetra of Latin Style Black Bean Soup plus one half tetra of water (empty the soup into the pan then refill halfway with water), one can of black beans, one cup frozen corn, one can fire roasted tomatoes, one can chicken, one half cup brown rice. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer until rice is done (about 40 minutes). Top with hot sauce and corn chips. 3y
ImperfectCJ @aperfectmjk All the ingredients are TJ's brand things. 3y

I read this Aug 5-15 and gave it 4 ⭐️. I am finding that a problem with a lot of Christie‘s novels are the endings as they seem so rushed. Overall I like this one and part of me wishes that she had continued writing mysteries with Bundle in them.

I've been catching up on my Agatha Christie!

I skipped Roger Ackroyd, listened to Big Four, Blue Train + Seven Dials and am skipping Partners in Crime (read it recently).

Big Four: 🔪🔪🔪🔪
Blue Train: 🔪🔪🔪
Seven Dials: 🔪🔪🔪🔪
Partners: 🔪🔪🔪

Seven Dials was my fav; Bundle is the best! And it has a Tommy + Tuppence feel that I just adore.

Next up: Roger Ackroyd. I've heard such great things!

4. Christie often uses a common setting of English literature: the English country house. What does this setting bring to the mystery that couldn't be found in a location like London?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I think the biggest thing is that it narrows the field of people involved. It seems a lot less likely that someone is going to hoof it out into the countryside, climb into your bedroom & knock you off than it does to think that a burglar may pop into your London flat. Isolated settings help keep the focus on the potential suspects that Christie wants us to consider & reduces the chances of it being someone random off the street. 4y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks Oh I like that. Yes, I would agree with you. It definitely narrows down the list of suspects. 4y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp: agreed, the setting is perfect for an enclosed location and set of suspects. I'm also taking a class from Future Learn about the literature of the English country house, and one thing we've talked about was how the country house represented hospitality and gentility, while the city was considered more rude. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 4y
See All 7 Comments
ferskner Thus the country house party in Christie is displaying that essence of hospitality, but it's subverted by the disruption of murder, which isn't very hospitable. :) I think it brings in a tension that we subconsciously understand even if we don't articulate it. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - That definitely makes sense, and I think you also see it played out with various hosts and hostesses feeling obligated to invite people to stay - Bundle in particular uses the “rules“ of hospitality to maneuver situations to work in her favor. @Laughterhp 4y
ferskner @thearomaofbooks That's a great point! I really love Bundle. 4y
Linsy @TheAromaofBooks @laughter You just explained so succinctly why the cozy mystery at the manor house is one of my favorite types of books, @ferskner! That course sounds fascinating 4y

3. Christie uses a cast of "bright young things" to solve her thrillers, while her two main detectives are both older characters. Why do you think she does this?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks It's kind of funny because both Poirot & Miss Marple tend to solve mysteries without a lot of legwork - they assess the facts & arrive at conclusions. The thrillers involve a bit more dashing about, which fits younger, more spontaneous characters... I can't really picture Poirot wedging himself into a china closet... 4y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks totally! There's a difference between the mental exercise of Poirot and Marple vs. the brash legwork of the thrillers. After all, Hastings has to exist to do the action for Poirot! I feel like she loved the mental exercise of the mysteries but that the thrillers were easier to write. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - and like we discussed in the other posts, I think Christie does hand out her humor in larger doses for her thrillers. Poirot has a subtle humor, Miss Marple's humor is fluttery, but in the thrillers it's just full-on and I love it! 4y
Linsy @TheAromaofBooks @ferskner I agree with all y‘all said! Before this read along I only knew about Tommy and Tuppence thrillers, so I‘ve been excited to find out I have plenty of dashing hilarity as well as thoughtful intrigue when I Want them! I love when a favorite author does multiple things well 4y

2. Critics reviewed this unfavorably against The Secret of Chimneys, as both books contain several of the same characters. Which do you prefer and why?

#agathachristieclubR2

TheAromaofBooks I really love both of these books. I do think the conclusion of Chimneys is a little more coherent - Seven Dials is a smidge of a stretch of credulity considering who Number Seven turns out to be. But I think they are both fun romps and thoroughly enjoy both. 4y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks What a weird thing to complain about. I really liked both of the books too. Though I think I liked Chimney‘s more as well. But both are great mystery books. 4y
hes7 I enjoyed both of them, too! They‘re both just really fun to read. 4y

(Please remember to tag everyone that has already commented to keep the conversation going, and to check the other questions posted!)

1. Did you like this book? Why or why not?

TheAromaofBooks I've read this one several times and enjoy it every time. More than almost any of her others, this one has an almost Wodehouse-ian flair of humor. I found myself snorting with laughter on more than one occasion. 4y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks This was my second time reading it. (It‘s the first Agatha Christie book I‘ve ever read). I listened on audio this time and I enjoyed it just as much. I really love the characters in this one. 4y

rubyslippersreads What‘s another month without me being behind on reading the book? 😂 4y
hes7 This was my first time reading this one, and I can see revisiting it in the future. 4y
ferskner @TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp @hes7 for some reason I enjoy this one MUCH better than The Secret of Chimneys! Maybe it's the pure ridiculousness of the plot and the Seven Dials? I also am a sucker for any Wodehousian Bright Young Things plot, and this is maybe the most in tune with that of all of Christie, even more than Tommy and Tuppence. @rubyslippersreads 🤣 4y
TheAromaofBooks @ferskner - “Wodehouse“ is EXACTLY what I kept thinking as well!! @Laughterhp @hes7 @rubyslippersreads 4y
Linsy @TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp @rubyslippersreads @hes7 @ferskner I love the tone of this one! I think I liked it more than Chimneys, but this one is so much more recent in my head. I definitely loved the repeat characters. The humor is very Tommy and Tuppence-esque, which I love! (edited) 4y

How are you doing today?

MaGoose My mom and I are doing well, although my mom is getting cabin fever. She's 99 and has a heart condition, so she hasn't been out of the house much over the past weeks since the coronavirus pandemic has ramped up. I tried to get her to knit or do a jigsaw puzzle, but no luck there. Not sure how I can keep her occupied. Me, I could always amuse myself ever since I was 4 when I learned to read and got a pair or roller skates for my birthday. 😎 5y
LiteraryinPA This sounds like such a smart idea. When will you get the test results? 5y
PurpleTulipGirl I was doing mostly fine till Oregon‘s governor said last night that there may be a stay home order next week. When I realized I‘d have to give up my weekly knitting group, it became harder to stay positive. It‘s my time each week when I get to put aside work concerns. 5y

The only one under quarantine until the results are back is Maya, unless hubby or I develop any symptoms. 5y

This is a conditional pick. I do NOT recommend the audiobook narrated by Emilia Fox. Her character voices are over the top, obnoxious, and annoying. I do, however, really like the characters themselves. This is the second novel to feature the crew from Chimneys including Superintendent Battle. The mystery was fun and twisty, and the characters were lively. Do yourself a favor and read it in print.

I started this on my way into work. It‘s narrated by Emilia Fox instead of Hugh Fraser and I have to say, I really miss Hugh‘s narration. I‘m not loving Emilia‘s voices for most of the characters. 😔

mabell I agree. I checked out one of her Miss Marples, and I just couldn't finish it. 7y
alisiakae I‘m slowly catching up for the #agathachristieclub, I‘m reading The Big Four now. 7y
DGRachel @4thhouseontheleft Good luck with that one. Just seeing the title makes my eyes roll now. 🙄 7y
alisiakae @DGRachel Yeah, it‘s not the best, to put it mildly. I‘m about 30% in and it‘s really, really slow going, because I keep putting it down to do other things. 7y

Hello all #agathachristieclub readers and all who love Christie!

Has anyone listened to this month's Christie read? I'm reading the paperback this month and enjoying it, but so far Roger Ackroyd is my favourite this year.

What do you all think?

batsy Haven't started this month's read yet but do agree that Roger Ackroyd is the highlight so far this year :) 7y
Sarah83 I don't find a German copy and I don't want to read it in English, so I wouldn't be able to read this one. 😫 7y
RachelAmphlett I‘m thinking I need to go back and read Roger Ackroyd as I didn‘t enjoy it as much as I expected to. And Then There Were None is still a firm favourite! 7y

Librarybelle I‘m a little behind on my Christie readings this year - should probably do a marathon reading one of these weekends! Roger Ackroyd was so good! 7y
DGRachel Just started this one on audiobook today. I‘m missing Hugh Fraser! 7y
Bambolina_81 @DGRachel He is definitely my favourite narrator! 7y
Bambolina_81 @Librarybelle I haven't been very prompt with my readings but I'm determined to get on top of things this month! 7y
Bambolina_81 @RachelAmphlett I still haven't read that but it's on my bedside table :) 7y
Bambolina_81 @Sarah83 You're allowed to have a month off ;) 7y
Bambolina_81 @batsy It'd been a bit slow going since January! 7y
Sarah83 Thank you 😍 7y
alisiakae I‘m a little behind, and currently reading The Big Four (probably my least favorite of the year, boy is it dragging!). Roger Ackroyd has definitely been the highlight since Jan. 7y
ferskner I'm listening to it now too. I like it more than her other espionage thrillers, simply because I love all the Bright Young Things, but I'm really ready for her to move on from this style. I read that she considered these really easy to write, so it makes sense that she turned to them in the aftermath of her mother's death, her divorce, and her ten missing days. 7y
PurpleyPumpkin The Murder of Roger Ackroyd has definitely been my favourite so far. This one is next up (I think I‘m a month behind). 7y
ferskner Do we have a new #agathachristieclub schedule? I'm finally caught up! 6y
